Why Did BO-KATAN Take the Darksaber from Sabine But NOT MANDO? - Mandalorian Season 2 Episode 8

  • After Din Djarin managed to defeat the current holder of the Darksaber, Moff Gideon, using his Beskar Spear, he became the new Ruler of Mandalore under mandalorian tradition. Mando of course had no interest in this title however, and offered to pass the Darksaber back to Bo-Katan Kryze, who was the holder before Moff Gideon stole it. Bo-Katan however refused to accept the ancient black weapon, because she had not won it in single combat from Din Djarin.
So why did Bo-Katan refuse to accept the Darksaber from Mando, when he accepted it as a gift from Sabine Wren during the Mandalorian Civil war, without defeating her in combat?
I’m going to breakdown some reasons on why Bo-Katan might not have accepted the Darksaber and why she probably made the wrong choice accepting it from Sabine.
So during Star Wars Rebels, Ezra Bridger and Sabine Wren managed to Steal the Darksaber from former Sith Lord, Darth Maul, inside of his lair on Dathomir. Maul was of course the ruler of Mandalore and the holder of the Darksaber during the Clone Wars, until he was captured at the Siege of Mandalore, and eventually lost interest in his little Mandalore adventure, storing the Darksaber on Dathomir.
After stealing the black blade from his lair, Sabine became the holder of the Darksaber, and eventually fought in the Mandalorian Civil war on Mandalore, where a Group of Mandalorians who aligned themselves to the Empire, and were led by Tiber Saxon, had control of Mandalore. These imperial Mandalorians utilized a horrific and terrifying weapon known as “The Duchess”, which would melt any Mandalorian within it’s range inside of their own Beskar Armor. The weapon was developed by Sabine Wren herself during her time at the imperial Academy, making it a painful reminder of her past.
During the Mandalorian Civil War, Sabine Managed to destroy the Duchess with the help of Bo-Katan, and soon after Gifted the Darksaber to her, as Sabine didn’t believe she was the one to lead. Bo-Katan accepted the ancient blade, and united all of the Clans of Mandalore together under her rule.
So why did she accept the Darksaber from Sabine, but refused to accept it from Din Djarin in the Mandalorian?
The first major reason for her refusal to accept the Dark blade could be that she absolutely regrets not following Mandalorian tradition the last time, and will never to do it again. It’s very possible that Bo-Katan now considers her action of taking the Darksaber without a fight a horrible error, because of her failure as Leader of Mandalore that followed soon After she took it from Sabine.
After Bo-Katan took the darksaber from Sabine without a battle, we know that the complete destruction and slaughter of the Mandalorian people took place under her rule. Under her rule, the Empire managed to steal the Darksaber from the leader of Mandalore, and begin the Great Purge, where the home of the Mandalorian people was glassed, and suffered intense orbital bombardment, before going even further and having their entire supply of Beskar stripped and stolen from the planet. By any measure, this is a complete and utter failure of Bo-katan’s leadership.
Maybe she feels that she wasn’t worthy to hold the Darksaber at all after letting her people fall to the Imperial Purge, and now having to go deep into hiding, tucked away in hidden Mandalorian Coverts around the Backwater planets of the Galaxy.
It’s also possible that she was unable to keep control and unity of the other Mandalorian clans that she united at the end of the Mandalorian Civil war because some of them started to question her claim to the Darksaber and the rulership of Mandalore. It’s possible that soon after the end of Star Wars Rebels, where she brought all of Mandalore together, things started to crack, and the other clans began to lose faith in her leadership, questioning how she can rule without having earned the Darksaber fairly. The imperials probably even continued to plant doubt among the other Mandalorians clans about Bo-Katan’s rule, probably leading them to splinter.
If this is the case, maybe now that she lost the Darksaber to Moff Gideon, she feels that if she wants to ever rule again and earn it back, she has to do it “the right way” and follow Mandalorian tradition. And if the clans did splinter off soon after she united them, she will definitely need to earn their respect back. To do this, gaining the darksaber correctly is probably one of the only ways.

I honestly really liked that scene. Bo'Katan looks at Mando's culture as dated and not what Mandalorian needs, yet Mando sees something as trivial as earning something through combat just as low. I'll be curious how much that changes her view on what is a tradition similar to the helmet thing for Mando.

Sidious defeated maul before Ahsoka, and even killed savage so technically Sidious was the ultimate owner of the saber, then in ep. 3 windu defeated palpatine and anakin (kind off) defeated windu, so tecnically, vader was the ruler of mandalore and even if we say that ahsoka defeated maul first and earned the saber it is pretty clear that vader would have killed her if it wasnt because of ezra so, vader was the ultimate owner of the darksaber, and then on ep.6 he (intentionally) lost against luke making his son the ultimate leader and since luke didnt got killed but rather died peacefully on a rock, the sabers owner remains a mystery.

Recent dark saber history: Sabine plucked it off the ground. She is not a worthy wielder. Then Sabine fought someone for possession of it In one on one combat and won, making her worthy. Bo was not worthy, so she refused. Then the clans rallied on her and she was worthy of ruling, and accepted the symbolic blade to boot. Wishy washy here, but Gideon takes the dark saber and purges mandalore, proving that Bo was not a strong enough leader to save her people and not strong enough a warrior to keep the blade. She is no longer worthy. Now Din has reclaimed the blade for the mandalorians in one on one combat, making him worthy by rule of that combat ritual. Bo however no longer has any claim whatsoever to being worthy of the dark saber because of her failings. Defeating the weilder in one on one ritual combat is the only option left for her after the disgrace that fell the mandalorians under her rule

I would actually like to talk ab this Bc I’m confused and not the most knowledgeable on canon ect Ik more ab the movies than the cartoons but here’s my theory. Bo didn’t earn it the right way that means neither did moff Gideon Bc he took it from her which means neither did mando. So if nobody ever beat maul to earn the saber that means it belonged to maul the whole time and obi-wan is the one who ended up defeating maul which would put the rightful possession to obi-wan but than Obi-Wan gave himself to the force technically he was defeated by nobody not even Vader Bc Vader didn’t kill him or beat him Obi-wan just disappeared to the force. Which leads me to my point which is I think that the cartoons created a loop hole that they didn’t mean to make and I think they’re trying to rewrite it with the mando series to fix the obvious loop hole Bc that would mean nobody is the rightful possessor of the dark saber for the rest of time. Again I’m not the most knowledgeable so if there’s something that you know that I said wrong or didn’t get right plz tell me

    • @tylerbradfield9981
      @tylerbradfield9981 3 роки тому +12

@@DiamondSquidy sounds right if we are tracking who earned the blade by combat, but Bo was the sister to the now dead dutchess Satine, ruler of Mandalore, so Bo has a royal claim to the throne. However, now that Din has the dark saber he has a warrior's claim to the throne. Then there's a thing in the comics where technically Boba Fett also has an inherited claim to leadership, but that comes from Jango whose band of mandos he lead were killed by Jedi, so Boba doesn't have any people to lead...
Basically, if we follow who was defeated in one on one combat for the saber, nobody is Mandalore. If we follow royal blood, Bo Katan is Mandalore. If we overlook some of the wishy washy stuff and just look at current ritual combat for the saber, Din Djarin is Mandalore.
I don't think anyone knows for sure who will rule, but in my opinion I think Din should help Bo Katan unite Mandalorian clans as well as the Children of the Watch together and restore the mandalorian people once more, as the new Mandalore. That'd be cool, and he'd be the first mandalore to have a strong connection to the Jedi order, which is also being restored right now.

@@tylerbradfield9981 so pretty much what your saying is to sum it up is that it can go a number of different ways. Which brings me back to my theory that I think Jon favreau is going to re-write the story line with help from George Lucas to plug in the pot holes from the cartoons and give mando the dark saber and have him be the ruler of mandolore Bc he’s already made it obvious that in order for Bo to lead she has to fight Din Bc the one who wields the dark saber is the true Heir to the throne to mandalore Bc they said that Din is now the rightful owner of the saber which doesn’t line up with the story of the saber Bc it would rlly go to obiwan and that means since Din is the rightful owner they’re re writing the story. So do you think that’s possible?

    • @tylerbradfield9981
      @tylerbradfield9981 3 роки тому +5

@@DiamondSquidy for all narrative purposes, I think the dark saber is getting the reset button. For canon purposes, I think they will keep the existing story but clarify why Din is the ruler rather than obi wan. Kinda like how it was confusing that mandalorians couldn't take off their helmets turned out to be a decent explanation I think we'll get one here to explain away that plot hole.
Also note that in the finale Gideon said stuff about the "story" of the blade giving it power, not just the sword. The sword isn't the actual tool to decide who rules, just because Maul had the saber for all those years if he crawled out of his hole wielding it not everyone would think his rule is legitimate, especially because he is not mandalorian. But if a mandalorian battles the man in charge of the purge of mandalore (which stripped the mandalorians of their planet, riches, and symbol for power) and wins back the blade of Mandalore... that's a compelling "story" that seems worthy of a lofty title like Mandalore.
So basically I don't think anything will be ret-conned I think the writers have what they need to make this make sense
Also, maul was once ruler of mandalore, but was dethroned by clones before he ran off. So did he run off with the mantle as well as the sword? Or just the sword? I think that he lost the title but still had the sword and the saber was no longer "in play." When the sword is in the possession of an unworthy it is not in play until that person proves themself to mandalorian people and tradition. For Sabine in the cartoon she scraped it off the ground but was not acknowledged until she defeated a contender in one on one combat, then the symbol meant she was worthy, at least somewhat, some still doubted her I think. Later Gideon stole the blade (I don't think he could've won it) and Bo lost her title because of the disgrace of the purge and with the splintering of all the clans. However, Gideon didn't claim the throne, but he still had the sword. When Din defeated him it follows that the sword is now in play and Din is worthy pending any contenders for rights to the saber and the throne.

I think the reason that you must now earn the Darksaber in battle to rule has to do with the propaganda aspect of Bo'Katans campaign against the empire. When she united the Clans she basically said "Look I have the Darksaber that means I'm strong and worthy" but then she lost the blade to Gideon and that showed weakness puting her her worthiness into question. By geting the blade back by any other means than winning it back, would only feed the doubt. Keep in mind that there is much rivalry between the Mandalorian clans and Bo-Katan would be risking alot if she tried get them all to follow her again with out proving that she was truly worthy. That is why I think she didn't accept the blade from Mando.

The difference was, in Clone wars she only wished to follow. The ambition or perceived right to lead all too often causes people to become extremely poor leaders. Leadership is not a right, it is a duty. This is likely why, in Mandalorian Culture, it must be won and is not simply passed down through family lines. One must show they have the strength to shoulder that burden.
Of course, over time it became more of a "prove I'm the biggest and strongest arsehole around" with people like Pre Vizla and Maul (no disrespect to Maul, one of if not my absolute favourite character in the franchise, but he is a total dick at that point, if not always). I feel that the "Children of the Watch", or perhaps only the covert seemingly lead, at least spiritually, by the Armorer, are trying to bring the Mandalorians back to their roots as honourable warriors of a Creed, like Din, rather than zealous entitled nationalists, like Bo (perhaps I'm being a bit harsh on her but eh).

He has held his own in combat, he has honor, he protects innocent people and tries to bring his bounties in alive, Bo Katan working with Mando rather than fighting him is one of the best things she could have done in that moment. Since he's willing to work with other clans but already a member of deathwatch, winning that one duel could eventually unify all the clans. If she killed him, the clans would only fight each other for the blade until there was nobody left. Bo Katan is truly like her sister even though she likes to be tough. He might have experience, but you're talking about fighting the actual royalty left from Mandalore that also outranked him in deathwatch, the training and experience she has already is enough to make her a threat in any fight. The point is that if the best of the Mandalorians keep fighting amongst themselves, the hope of restoring their people will be gone forever. Why do you think Gideon was so happy to toss the Darksaber over to Mando in front of Bo Katan? No sorry, I have higher hopes than them fighting for this series. The Clans will be restored, Boba will lead the new syndicates with a beskar fist, Luke will train Grogu before Kylo destroys his enclave. New series and developments will eventually lead to us seeing the liberation of all Imperial occupied planets AND the creation of the Alliance fleet for Exegol. Most people in the comment already have the answers
if you think about, the rules never applied. You just need to own the dark saber to unite the mandalore and then someone else could claim your place by challenging you. Moff Gideon isn't some off written character to be a anatagonist for the plot, he is indeed a smart individual. Imagine someone gives you a powerful sword, a sword that unites others mind you, and have that taken from you utterly defeats your pride and at that point are you even worthy? As @Arthur Cavazos mentioned, I would kick myself to til i bleed every last drop if i was Bo infact i wouldnt be able to sleep at night. That is why SHE wanted to defeat Moff Gideon and why she wanted him to surrender to her. It isn't some petty contest that we thought she had, it was her pride, she needs to prove herself worthy and having that pride stolen from her really builds the plot. No matter what plot holes you think this has, Dave Filoni never and I say NEVER let's the fans down. He is able to fix the entire trilogy and Ahsoka's character, I am sure he's cooking something tasty in the kitchen
    anyways good analysis otherwise!

She may not have united all of Mandalorians under her rule because she did not earn the dark saber by combat.
Keep in mind the Mandalorian clans that joined her in Rebels were already loyal to her but the ones who did not attend that day most likely questioned her leadership and did not follow her because she did not follow the tradition of earning the Dark Saber. This most likely lead to a huge divide within the Mandalorian ranks simply because certain clans did not see Bo-katan as a worthy leader or due to how she did not properly earn her position as leader through traditions.

However, as far as combat goes, I don't even think it has to be one to one. It certainly is one way, but it is never said to be the only way. Gideon states "it must be won in battle." Bo Katan clearly acknowledges Gideon's claim to the saber if she feels she must defeat him to deserve it.

Gideon is still alive so the fight between him and Din isn't over ... technically seen! The fight is only sort of "paused". So Bo-Katan could take off Gideons handcuffs and they will have a fight to the death on the birdge. But according to the title of the series I personally think Bo-Katan sort of accepts Din as the rightful owner of the darksabre (for now). Din is mandalorian, he follows the mandalorian way and is respected (more or less) by Bo-Katan and the other mandals. So after the task/mission to unite Grogu with the Jedi the next goal for the new season(s) possibly is to take back their homeplanet.

I assumed it's because Gideon took it from her in battle like Maul did to Viszla and it's seen more or less as legit, _recovering_ and passing down the weapon is one thing but if it was *taken* in force/you were bested by a better foe it makes sense that it can only be earned back with force/better skill. Taking the Darksaber from Bo technically Gideon was made Mandalore, then Din bested him, if Bo just has it handed to her (again) not only would she feel unworthy but why would all clans unite around her when Din is actually the one who won it fair and square through combat

Considering how easily Din defeated Gideon, I very seriously doubt he defeated Bo and took it from her. The last rightful ruler of Mandalore to be defeated in combat is Pre Vizla. Maul was never defeated, Sabine took it from his house or some shit and then gave it to Bo. Bo technically had no claim accept for her royal status which allowed her to rule Mandalore. Din technically isn't the rightful ruler because he hasn't defeated Maul but since Maul is dead I doubt that matters anymore. So I guess we'll see, I personally don't think Din would be a good leader. Hes to soft and he's a lone wolf, he makes for a good warrior and a terrible leader. Bo isn't really a good choice either so hopefully Din evolves to help reunite his people.

So does this mean at the end when Mado told the child " I'll see you again" was a lie due to after he left with Luke Bo-Katan would be killing Mando to take the darksaber? If that is the case, that ending got much darker. If they wanted a good scene done right when it was done wrong in the movies this would be the perfect place for Mando to turn away from Bo-Katan and toss the saber over his shoulder ( to the side, or at Bo-katan feet) and walk away, showing he has no interest at all.

I love the idea that she feels bending tradition led her to losing Mandalor and she can’t risk that mistake again. Especially since the one offering it to her held to “the old ways” of not removing his helmet. Kind of Jedi-ish: We bent the rules on training Jedi in the past and ruined everything, not making the same mistake with Luke/Grogu

Nope. Ahsoka defeated Maul during the Battle of Mandalore in 19 BBY, before Obi-Wan killed Maul on Tatooine in about 2 BBY. So theoretically Ahsoka would be Mand'alor, but Maul hadn't have the Darksaber with him that day, so she didn't actually win it.
