I heard this song for the first time the day after my dad died. My name is cicely but my family occasionally calls me Cecilia. I bawl my eyes out everytime I hear it. He didn't want me to be afraid. And sometimes.. this song makes me feel like he's moving through me, like a satellite does through space. Guiding me. Protecting me. Sometimes this song is the only thing that makes it okay for a moment that he's gone.
+Ray McCourt Yes he is. one of his hit albums JUST turned 10 years old. He went off the grid after Jack's Mannequin and came back with a more mature sound. which is this
My wife and I have seen Andrew McMahon live twice. The second time was just shy of our daughter's first birthday. This song definitely hit harder that time. When Cecelia came out to sing with him, the tears were streaming down my face. He mentioned that he knows someday she won't want to do that anymore and you could tell he's dreading it. It really drove home how important it is to cherish every moment you get to spend with your little ones.
I fell in love with this song as a teenager and it’s stuck with me. I’ll be back in a few years when I’m planning on having kiddos; and I’m hoping my first daughter will be Cecelia. ❤️
This is a perfect example of Radio politics. Andrew McMahon has literally been making music this good for the past 10+ years, and it took this long for him to get the recognition he deserves!
It's hard to keep up with him. First it was Soemthing Corporate, then he went solo, then there was Jack's Mannequin, and then this. I used to hear that one song by Jack's Mannequin on the radio back when it came out. Can't remember the name, but there is that.
it makes me think of the 2-1/2 year old daughter I lost (my only daughter) in 1987 .... and wonder what she would have become.... absolutely a great song ! hat off to you andrew!
I interpreted that the woman was the representation of Cecilia grown up, innocent, alive and free. She is everything to him, and in return her dad gave her the world.
The rest of his music is underrated. I've actually heard this song on the radio. But he's actually been releasing music since he was a teenager in the late 90s, early 2000s. First with his band, Something Corporate and then with his second band, Jack's Mannequin.
This song is being played on 97x in Tampa FL. My 8 yr old girl and 6 yr old boy begged me to Google this artist. Well done Mr. McMahon- my dad thinks you sound like Coldplay, my daughter remembered your lyrics and my son harmonized nicely to this! The Tucketts in Florida love you:)
My idea probably isn't correct, but I like to think the video is him telling his daughter the story of her mother, how amazing she was and adventures she may have gone on, and then the video is what the child is interpreting. Like he could have said she loved to go camping or hiking and loved the outdoors and this is what the child invisioned because of how much she loved her mother. Idk kinda like displaying how much a mother means to a child. The kind of wonder a child gets from hearing stories, things like that
I love how he wrote this song for his daughter Cecilia. It just proves how much he loves her and what he would do for her. If you listen to the lyrics, you can see how he sings about keeping her safe, loving her, etc. It's beautiful.
Christine Schmitt I agree. It's odd that he's thinking all these things while dropping acid in a locked alone in a hotel room though. Although it might explain the odd imagery.
@Ekko 4235 Cecilia's mother is quite alive and well. He features her as well in the other video for this song (A day in the life version). This song is about who he was before and after his daughter's birth.
I was listening to this song as I pulled into my driveway the night my wife told me that we would be parents. My daughters name is Cecilia, named after this song. It will forever hold a special place in my heart
This song is just beautiful. I was introduced to Cecillia and the Satellite by a friend in high school. I'll never forget the lessons he taught me and the true meaning to what being human is. He was a man I truly looked up to and respected, one I considered family. Now I can never listen to this song without tearing up. Rest in Peace Christopher, I truly hope you found that happiness you were looking for.
Thank you for your kind and heartfelt message your words are deeply appreciated and I'm grateful for the love ❤️ and support you've show me we re you supporting from ?
Cecilia Vasquez Cecilia by Simon and Garfunkel is about a really awful girl who cheats on her boyfriend. I don't like that one, but it's the one everyone knows. And, Unfortunately, that's where my mom got my name. . .
i think everyone can relate to this song. even if you aren't a father, you've had a father. even if you never knew your father, you probably know you'll love your own child someday. even if you never have children, you can relate to love. even if you've never loved anyone or anything in your life, someone has loved you.
As a new parent with a daughter just a bit older than Cecilia, this song really resonates with me. What a sweet little lady you have there, and what an incredible gift your music will be to her throughout her life. See you in State College next month! The DC show was great, and I'm thrilled you're coming to my town so I get to see you again!
my god... this is the first time anything has ever brought me tears of happiness I don't know what it is about this song but it is beautiful it is just completely beautiful I can't see why anybody wouldn't like this song it is amazing words can not describe what I an feeling right now
"Of all the things my hands have held, the best of by far is you" - that line gets me everytime. My youngest daughters name is Cecilia and I think of her everytime I hear this song. ❤
Most people are quick to assume songs like this are about a significant other. The lyrics make it so easy to see it's about a child, probably his first, and how much things change when you find out you're going to be a parent.
Andrew's finally getting some much deserved airplay! took it one year but it's a top 10 hit on alternative and rock radio. for all of you who are new to his work, please PLEASE check out his band before going solo - it's called Jack's Mannequin. i dare you not to completely fall in love with either "The Mixed Tape", "The Resolution", or "Hostage". Andrew's one of the most talented songwriters of our generation and seeing him reach new levels of success is a pleasure.
+Felipe Deliberaes While I do agree that it's time for him to get some airplay, Jacks Mannequin was not his best or first band. Something Corporate is what you're looking for.
I think this song is about the little girl (baby) who was born, but then her mother died while giving birth. I think that the baby is Cecilia. The father is saying how he will protect his daughter and how she should't be afraid. I think the book that they are reading is a book that Cecilia's mother made for her, but died before she could give it to Cecilia. Since the mother died, in heaven she is finally able to do all the things she wrote and drew in this book. The father is showing the book to Cecilia since that is what her mother wanted. I could be wrong but that was just my take on it.
+MaryJane Erskin he wrote the song for his daughter (Cecilia) and he wanted to write a song telling her about who he was before and after she was born and that he will always be there for her though her highs and lows too, nothing to do with death just in case you wanted to know
This song is very special to me, because my name is Cecilia, and my dad and i would always listen to this song when I was a kid. This song made good memories. Thank you for creating it.❤️❤️
I remember when I first heard this song in passing at a party and the part about him crashing the car when he was 17 with his mom in the passenger literally made me freeze because that exact thing happened to me when I was 17 only my brother was in the back too. So as soon as I got home I looked up the lyrics and I totally fell in love with all of his stuff he's amazing
When this song came out, I watched this video with my little girl a number of times, knowing full well how hard it was gonna be when she grew up and left home. Watching it now that we're past that point, I can't help but get very emotional. She'll always be my baby girl and I love her more than life itself.
This use to be my all time favorite song I would listen to it every day all day. This came in my recommendations, and I’m crying right now, it brought back so many memories when life was fun and easy.
This song has been a huge comfort for me since 2014 and I can’t even imagine certain times in my life without it. My music taste has changed and evolved so much since then but I have listened to this song regularly throughout all of it, and music is probably the most important thing in my life nowadays. I will be loving this song forever.
so they were at the panic! at the disco concert and I didn't know who they were until they sang this song. and oh my god they were so good, he sings amazingly live. 💜💜💜
Saw them at Waterplace Park in Providence a few years ago...worth every effort. Brought my nieces and nephews. F'n brilliant. This song always bring tears.
This song will forever hold a special place in my heart. 2 weeks ago on Sept 8, 2020 I was listening to UA-cam and watching vids on my tv. I couldn't focus on anything, instead, I paced my house. This video came on and I stopped dead in my tracks and watched. About 3 hours later, I received the call that my Mom had passed.Life is too damn short. Live everyday like it's your last.
Whenever I hear this song, it makes me so happy, and I got to hear him live yesterday, and it was the best concert I've ever been to, and he played this song last, and it was amazing, I almost cried I was so happy
A father reading to his baby daughter.. When you're a parent you'll understand..very moving song. Especially for dads with daughters.. :) Just looked this up.. that's Andrew with his baby daughter in the video.
I LOVE THIS SONG! I get home from school and turn this on and do my homework and that's how I do my homework this song means a lot for me I am thankful for the time I had to go pick up my sister from her work thing and I heard this on the radio that was awesome and I love all your songs!
My wife and I renewed our vows on our 10 year anniversary. My mother found the song, and told me how perfect and fitting it was as it matches my life to a "T" not to mention my wifes name is Cecilia... Needless to say this was our wedding song during our vow renewal...
@Brice Carter it’s: “For all the things my hands have held, the best by far is you.” Dumbass! And “one if the greatest line I’ve ever heard.” You should probably use “of” and pluralize “line” to “lines”. By seeing your profile picture, it was expected though.
I made a video of my daughter for her 3rd birthday with this song playing in the background, now every time she here's it she calls it her song and I end up tearing up.
This song brings me back to a very distinctive point in my teenage years. It brings me back to some of the darkest moments but also a time of pure happiness, for that I am grateful. This song will continue to carry with me.
"...for all the things my hands have held, the best be far is you. If I could fly, then I would know what life looks like from up above & down below...." Those words move me....so very much.
I heard this song for the first time on the radio a couple weeks ago, and I just burst into tears driving down the highway and I have no idea why. I love it.
My aunt move somewhere and before she moved she used to put the song all the time and everytime I hear the song it makes me want to cry but she came back to California
I lock myself in a hotel room Been waiting all night for the walls to move I've loved some girls that I barely knew I've made some friends, and I've lost some too Crashed my car, I was 17 My mother in the seat riding next to me The things I've learned from a broken mirror How a face can change when a heart knows fear Through all the things my eyes have seen The best by far is you If I could fly Then I would know What life looks like from up above and down below I'd keep you safe I'd keep you dry Don't be afraid Cecilia I'm the satellite And you're the sky I've cafe crawled through Amsterdam I've been around the world with a punk rock band And I've seen London, and I've played Japan I've been knocked down, I got up again For all the places I have been I'm no place without you If I could fly Then I would know What life looks like from up above and down below I'd keep you safe I'd keep you dry Don't be afraid Cecilia I'm the satellite And you're the sky I'm the satellite And you're the sky For all the things my hands have held The best by far is you If I could fly Then I would know What life looks like from up above and down below I'd keep you safe I'd keep you dry Don't be afraid Cecilia I'm the satellite And you're the sky And you're the sky I'm the satellite And you're the sky And you're the sky
This is my song to my now two year old daughter....I've lived a crazy life and now she's my everything. I first heard this song the day I found out I was pregnant
This song brings so many memories I remember going to the San Diego zoo wild animal park and hearing this song for their bird show Frequent flyers where they have all types of birds and that was one of my greatest memories when my mom was still alive, I lost her after I graduated 2019, this song reminds me of her, also just found my comment from 5 years ago time flies by☹️
If you want to talk about underrated, then you should be referring to this man. Not the song. He's been doing this for so long, fighting sickness, and he is just now getting this recognition. No matter what group he's in, he is the soul of it. His lyrics are intricate and poetic. That's rare to see breaking in the mainstream anymore.
I saw them last night, and I thought they performed amazing! I never listened to them, and i didnt know they did this song. I loved this song before last night. And i love it even more
"For all the things my hands have held, the best by far is you". Wow, that's a powerful line if I ever heard one. Though I prefer the production and arrangements from his other albums better, his lyrics are strong as ever. And, by the way, that was not a criticism by any means... I still prefer this production over almost any other music.
I'm 100% on board with this. I will love anything he ever does, but it's definitely different. Then again, JM* was different than So Co and I didn't like Everything in Transit at first. I'm enjoying growing with him and his music.
Guiding me. Protecting me. cicely dorris I like cicely better than cecelia; and Cecilia is a beautiful name. Great song.
❤️
Awww sorry for your loss my mom died in 2011 I still miss her 🙏
He’s definitely out there
I'm sure he's looking down at you smiling 😃
This song helped me heal when my father died. I just imagine him looking over me still. Miss you, Dad.
"For all the things my hands have held, the best by far is you." My heart leaps at that line every time I hear this song...

YESSSS! agree
A sweet song for his unborn daughter - he's so good. I don't understand why he's not more well-known.
He's huge! Something Corporate, Jack's Mannequin and now this band. He's always been amazing.
Hes not huge...
+Ray McCourt Yes he is. one of his hit albums JUST turned 10 years old. He went off the grid after Jack's Mannequin and came back with a more mature sound. which is this
I knew I knew that voice!! Well, now.
He might not be huge in your interpretation, but he's definitely a prolific singer-songwriter if you look at his past work.

It doesn't have to be that way. In this world, other than my husband, there is no one I want to be with more than my parents.
The best song when the kids you’ve raised are on their own with their own families! this will ALWAYS BE A SOMG FOR MY DAUGHTER’S!
I fell in love with this song as a teenager and it’s stuck with me. I’ll be back in a few years when I’m planning on having kiddos; and I’m hoping my first daughter will be Cecelia. ❤️

hm i was thinking that those fields could hide a body very well idk why u 2 were thinking about kids

I hate the word k****s. It's so banal.
My youngest daughter is named Cecilia. She's 2

stuntacore so true. I've been a huge fan since Leaving Through the Window. Love him.

So nostalgic with the lyrics "been around the work with a punk rock band." Andrew McMahon still killing it through the years.
Listened to your song for the first time around 8 years ago. Now I named my daughter Cecilia, and she’s the world for me ❤️
His daughter's name is Cecilia.
"Their daughter, Cecilia Kate McMahon, was born February 13, 2014." (Wikipedia)

My wife and I renewed our vows on our 10 year anniversary. My mother found the song, and told me how perfect and fitting it was as it matches my life to a "T" not to mention my wifes name is Cecilia... Needless to say this was our wedding song during our vow renewal...
I heard this song from no good nick on Netflix and it brung back alot of memories and 9 years later i still cry to this song
this song is beautiful
I listened to this while I was high and it was great
lol
"From all the things my hand had held, the best part is you" ..Wow... one if the greatest line I've ever heard.
@Brice Carter it’s: “For all the things my hands have held, the best by far is you.” Dumbass! And “one if the greatest line I’ve ever heard.” You should probably use “of” and pluralize “line” to “lines”. By seeing your profile picture, it was expected though.
OMG, I am soo excited to find this song! I've heard this song back in 2915. I was in a dark place in my life. Thank you for this song to fly...
I made a video of my daughter for her 3rd birthday with this song playing in the background, now every time she here's it she calls it her song and I end up tearing up.
They have such a stage presence!! I'm addicted to them
This song brings me back to a very distinctive point in my teenage years. It brings me back to some of the darkest moments but also a time of pure happiness, for that I am grateful. This song will continue to carry with me.
I absolutely love this song and it deserves WAY more recognition. I also love playing it on Smule Magic Piano 😜 was playing it just now actually🌚

This song is so underrated it should really be in the top 5
Hayden Fc agreed
"...for all the things my hands have held, the best be far is you. If I could fly, then I would know what life looks like from up above & down below...." Those words move me....so very much.

I tear up every time I hear this song and start thinking about my daughters. Awesome song!

Sometimes I sing this to myself when I need love. It's such a beautiful song. When I saw this live, I cried the whole time, the energy was magical

I heard this song for the first time on the radio a couple weeks ago, and I just burst into tears driving down the highway and I have no idea why. I love it.

THIS PEANUT BUTTER IS MY JELLY JAM
can anything be too gay?? maybe 'not gay enough', but never too gay.
Evan Edinger, EVAN!! i love you!
it's my jam too :)
My 4 year old asked me to UA-cam this for him. Never heard of this band.
Christian Sambonino I find it crazy that I live in a world where a 4-year-old knows what UA-cam is.
Everyone knows what UA-cam is
Nes my six year old brother asks me to "upload" a video so he can watch
It's the new gen.
Tfw UA-cam is older than your kid.
this song makes me think of a little girl who's parents died and a spirit came to her and promised her he'll protect her
+Trey Poitra dem spirits

Evan Boroch XD
My aunt move somewhere and before she moved she used to put the song all the time and everytime I hear the song it makes me want to cry but she came back to California
Still makes me cry
Is it just me, or do his lyrics seem to come from some other world? A better one?
I’m a big fan of yours and I went to your upside down flowers concert at the Moore theatre in Seattle
I lock myself in a hotel room
Been waiting all night for the walls to move
I've loved some girls that I barely knew
I've made some friends, and I've lost some too
Crashed my car, I was 17
My mother in the seat riding next to me
The things I've learned from a broken mirror
How a face can change when a heart knows fear
Through all the things my eyes have seen
The best by far is you
If I could fly
Then I would know
What life looks like from up above and down below
I'd keep you safe
I'd keep you dry
Don't be afraid Cecilia
I'm the satellite
And you're the sky
I've cafe crawled through Amsterdam
I've been around the world with a punk rock band
And I've seen London, and I've played Japan
I've been knocked down, I got up again
For all the places I have been
I'm no place without you
If I could fly
Then I would know
What life looks like from up above and down below
I'd keep you safe
I'd keep you dry
Don't be afraid Cecilia
I'm the satellite
And you're the sky
I'm the satellite
And you're the sky
For all the things my hands have held
The best by far is you
If I could fly
Then I would know
What life looks like from up above and down below
I'd keep you safe
I'd keep you dry
Don't be afraid Cecilia
I'm the satellite
And you're the sky
And you're the sky
I'm the satellite
And you're the sky
And you're the sky
This is my song to my now two year old daughter....I've lived a crazy life and now she's my everything. I first heard this song the day I found out I was pregnant
"For all the things my hands have held, the best by far is you"...tears won't stop....
Almost 2021 and this song is still the best ❤
Who is still listening as the summer of 2019 winds down>??
Greetings from the woods of Maine!
Popped into my head today. No idea why. Absolutely needed it, though.
This song brings so many memories I remember going to the San Diego zoo wild animal park and hearing this song for their bird show Frequent flyers where they have all types of birds and that was one of my greatest memories when my mom was still alive, I lost her after I graduated 2019, this song reminds me of her, also just found my comment from 5 years ago time flies by☹️
Story of growing up and feeling love, amazing.
This song is amazingggg !!!
this song is so hart warming
this song makes me so happy (:
me 2😃
If you want to talk about underrated, then you should be referring to this man.
And i love it even more
Same!! They were amazing and I wish I knew about them sooner!

WHY DOES EVERYONE COMMENT ON MY HECKIN ICON ITS CHANGED NOW HA
"For all the things my hands have held, the best by far is you". Wow, that's a powerful line if I ever heard one. Though I prefer the production and arrangements from his other albums better, his lyrics are strong as ever. And, by the way, that was not a criticism by any means... I still prefer this production over almost any other music.
Oh, AND, the video is freaking beautiful. I could watch this over and over.
I'm 100% on board with this. I will love anything he ever does, but it's definitely different. Then again, JM* was different than So Co and I didn't like Everything in Transit at first. I'm enjoying growing with him and his music.
this song bring tears to my eyes.... so deep
Heard this song yesterday and brought me back in time. I completely forgot about this song.
