I actually herd it’s better to be a touch late than too early because the colors are still amazing right after peak before the leaves really brown up and fall off the trees with before especially where the leaves peak in the last week of September or the 1st week of October it needs to be just before or there won’t be a lot of color yet.
It all depends on what your looking for though, if you want more of a fall pallet where you have the bright colors and some colors mixing in and you have some bright shades as well as some rustier shades as well a lack of green to really get that fall look and feel than just after peak is probably better.
But if you want the look where the colors look like there just beginning to pop where you have some green along with splashes of bright fall color like the leaves are changing then slightly before is better. But if the place peaks during the last week of September then don’t go before the 2nd to last week of September when the colors pop because there won’t be much color yet if any at all.
@@hot_guy997 Personally, I definitely prefer to be out pre-peak because that period feels the most vibrant and alive to me. The brown leaves (dead leaves of course) filter in over the months, typically going from maple onward in my experience, but it doesn't come all at once. You find dead leaves well before peak. So for me, I see it as a trade off. There will be a bunch of leaves that are colorful oranges and reds and yellows around peak, and then there will be leaves that aren't. Do I want those leaves to be green or brown? I choose green! But, absolutely, to each their own and I don't think there's a right answer here at all. Just personal preferences. Because of the drought this summer, I think we're heading for an early and lackluster fall in New England. I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect it'll be different this year. Happy shooting!
@@MatthewRaifman yeah personally I choose brown over green because it’s more fall like. Green is a spring and summer color so that’s why I prefer the brown over the green. But obviously peak is the best time because that’s when the colors are the most vibrant.
Great tips, especially about spreading out the trips. Four straight days of cloudless, or washed out skies, skies can be a bummer! That’s a mistake I’ve made many years.
I think the best way to see the colors is to be there 3 weekends in a row and the 2nd weekend is peak, then you get to see the colors right before, right at, and right after peak. I really love seining the colors at peak but I also love the process of the color change a lot.
Nice! Should just be starting in full! I hiked artists bluff again a few days ago and it was lovely even in the rain. Foliage was really starting to turn in the area around Cannon Mountain. Didn’t check North Conway. Have a blast!
@@MatthewRaifman Great information - what hikes would you recommend to see peak foliage? I was considering doing a few around Mt. Washington but am open to changing my hiking plans.
I think it’s always great to do Artists’ Bluff in Franconia. I was there a week ago and the foliage was just starting so I think this weekend should be great. If the weather is good, Mt Washington is a great day hike. There’s frost up there already, so be prepared with warm weather/rain gear. I like doing the loop up Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail, the Mt Washington, and back down the Gulfside Trail to Jewell Trail. Gulfside and Jewell should have nice foliage on the way down and if they don’t, the vistas are amazing. Drops you back at your car. I think Hi-Cannon should also have nice foliage given it’s near Artists Bluff. Have a great time!
This is great, Matt. I'll be heading to the white mountains this weekend and I'll try to capture both the photos that you have added in this video 🖖🏼 And, google maps kinda planning is damn true. It saves a lot of time.
Wonderful! Should be a perfect time to be there. Get up early to avoid the crowds if you can. Check out the video I just posted for more about Artists’ Bluff. Have a great trip!
Hi Matt, thanks for the tips and especially for the place to stay ( Tripoli Rd) I'm up there often (From Mass.) and usually stay with family in North Conway but its nice to know an alternative location. I've just started my channel and am looking forward to adding more video blogs when the weather gets better. It's Mark O'Connell Photo if you want to have a look. Thanks again!
Thanks for watching! Early morning is great. Depending on the hike, some of the popular ones have parking lots that start to get cramped around 9-10am so trying to be on trail before 8am is a great idea. I find that once you’re hiking, though, there’s enough space that you don’t see people constantly even on the busiest days. Most folks stick to the Kancamagus Highway and short hikes off of it, so getting into the woods is a good strategy to find some solitude in nature!
Amazing tips Matt. This makes a lot of sense, especially the one about controlling the level of editing done. Not changing the subject/essence of the subject is critical to reproduce the actual scene and not overly dramatize or dare I say "fake" a scene. I look forward to more such videos from you.

Thank you! Hope you’re planning a trip this year and the weather gods cooperate!
It's beautiful. I used to hike camp and mountain climb in the White Mountains in NH.
Good tips. Thanks for sharing.

What is the 3rd week of October usually like for foliage in the white mountains?
I think it might be a bit late this year. Maybe aim for mid October
Great travel guide video, very informative , followed

Wears an NPR shirt and says Indigenous Peoples Day… yeah he’s definitely vaxxed and boosted with pronouns on his resume.
No pronouns on the resume yet, but you make a good point that it would be a good thing to add. Thanks!
