♫DOOM Main Theme, ZX Spectrum Version (SNES Arrangement) - NintendoComplete

  • This is my arrangement of the main theme from Doom on the Sinclair Spectrum ZX microcomputer. I have arranged the song for native playback on SNES hardware, and the audio was recorded directly from a launch-model SNES deck.
And yes, this really does originate from the ZX. A couple of Russian guys, probably rocket scientists or something based on their skills, put together a demo for it back in 1997 and it has since shown up in all sorts of unexpected corners of the net. Let me carve out yet another.
For a computer that was so painfully limited (even back in the early 80s when it was new), the ZX sure proved itself with this game. Be sure to go check it out! If you don't know the song I'm covering here, here's the link to the video I used as my reference track when making the SNES mix: • DOOM ZX Spectrum Sound...
The video, by the way, was recorded from the original Dos game.
The song was always my favorite part about ZX Doom. The 3-channel beeper really got to strut itself in this dancehall tune. I figured I'd try to make it sound a bit more... dancehall-y (?) by recreating it with all sorts of cheesy, screaming 90s synth pads.
Hope you all like it! And make sure to listen to it on a decent pair of speakers or headphones. It's a bit of a banger, if I do say so myself.

No cheats were used during the recording of this video.

If you ever wanted to go to a rave where all of the music was done with a Super Nintendo, it might sound something like this... :) Play it loud!

Your best arrangement so far. It sounds less MIDIsh than previous works.

Sounds like something you'd hear in a demoscene ROM (Then again, so did the original too I guess). Nice job.

I'm shocked that they even ATTEMPTED to make Doom on the Spectrum. From the footage I've seen, it wasn't great by any means, but at least they did manage it.

Nice remix ... but the description is underwhelming to say the least.
That ZX doom is more of a pseudo wolf3d engine with some redrawn doom sprites. There are a bunch of better raycasters around for the ZX these days. Also, no "3-way beeper" in that video ... 128k Spectrums had an AY-3-8910/8912 which is a typical soundchip for the 80s.

Thanks. Yeah, I know that the ZX game is nothing like the real Doom. I never intended for that idea to come across. I didn't really know what else to call it since that's what was what it was named. But, I thought the game was a real achievement for the hardware, especially considering it was something made in the mid 90s. I'm sure there are more impressive things out there now given that 20 years have passed for people to further dissect the hardware and to learn how to exploit it, though. For the sound chip, I only called it a beeper to exaggerate how rudimentary those chips were, even when compared to stuff you'd hear from the C64 and the NES.

Hey man. Love your content. So uh, when are you gonna play Mega Man 11? I know it already came out for a while but the last thing that we from ya is to play 11 on the latest Nintendo Console of course, The Nintendo Switch! Cause that's what every mega man game with a few exceptions came in with tradition!
