The aircraft was up-side-down on impact.
Proximity of pilot(s) landing to crash site.
Time between impact and landing was NOT LONG! I suspect the chutes were not open long.
Couple cases of beer...done. And throw one in for the canopy engineers as well.

@@BradfordGuy It happened in 1968. I was six years old. He was my moms older brother. He had just graduated from flight school at Vance AFB and was assigned to the 40th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Eglin. He was in the back seat of an F-4. All we know is they were training on low level bombing runs and something went horribly wrong. We only know that because another pilot in his squadron told us. In that day, the military didn’t give families much info on how their loved one died. My grandparents were never the same. We visited the cemetery many times and they always cried. I take solace in the fact that he died doing what he loved more then anything else. Thanks for your concern and your interest.

Ex USAF pilot here; They ejected at the last possible second . Seats normally have a drogue chute to aid in seat/man separation. Canopy goes first, so it is way back there somewhere. Probably a seat impacting near them to the right. Rear seat normally goes first in an automated sequence. rear- seater can over ride and go first. Very near being out of seat envelope parameters for safe ejection in this accident for both of of these very fortunate pilots.

There's another video from the cockpit and with pilot communications with ATC. They were on final approach and what looks like no more than about 500 feet altitude to me, student at the controls, when you can see a bird flying in front of them that gets ingested and causes engine failure. The instructor takes the control and notifies ATC that they're going to fall short of the runway. He barely has time to tell the student to prepare to eject when the plane stalls, goes into a steep dive and they punch out.

If you slow down the footage and pause it at 2 min 29 sec the aircraft came in at an angle of about 50 degrees...
Those people on their walk were very lucky that they weren't exactly at that spot when the aircraft hit ...
    Devastating impact.

that only counts, if you step out after the dust has settled. if you have to abandon the craft before to avoid injury... meh
main thing is that two aviators live to fly again.

    • @ChrisNobodySpecial
      @ChrisNobodySpecial 2 роки тому +2

That line is often quoted, but us old aviators know it is absolute bullshit. It is along the lines of, 'There are old pilots, there are bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots'.
There are plenty of old and bold pilots. Bob Hoover and Chuck Yeager to name a couple.
In the military before the new, kinder, softer UPT and Naval Primary flight training, many students pilots were washed out because they screwed up landings on check rides. Landing to the untrained eye may look peachy and decent. But to the check ride evaluator they were dogshit approaches all the down after intercepting the localizer.
Now for certain special handling cases, thanks to social engineering purposes, they are remediating student pilots that would have been FAC boarded, put on terminal leave and given a plane ticket home.

There's a saying among pilots, "Any landing you can walk away from is a good landing." So to these pilots, I say, "Good landing!!!!"

Military pilots are trained to fly the plane into the ground if necessary. They must do their best to avoid hitting people. If they don't try to protect people on the ground they can lose their wings. A plane with a dead engine can still be controlled a while away from people. They have emergency hydraulic systems. If you've ever seen a video where a pilot waited until the last second to eject that is the reason. If pilot must crash inside a city they will try to crash it in a vertical dive into a parking lot or highway.

  • @kennardjohnson7875

Bad thing about ejecting is you get 2 and then you can't fly again because of back compression, and I agree navy needs a new trainer.

Interesting, initial reports were from a bird strike while on approach. Video was shown there was a bird strike. Possibly hydraulics failed to keep it up in the air for an attempted safe landing ? It appears there are two different stories.

The aircraft’s hydraulic system caution light appeared as the aircrew was practicing landing pattern procedures, roughly 45 minutes after takeoff. Although the crew sought to resolve the emergency, the aircraft still suffered an “abrupt and rapid right roll soon after a hydraulic system 1 (HYD1) failure,” the investigation said. The roll off happened so quickly and at such a low altitude that the aircrew had no other option but to eject.
