I've had a beard since age 24, and I've always kept it sort of Rosecrans'esque. I decided once to let it grow out, confident it'd go either full civil war or college professor. It came out "psycho killer." Back to short and neat.

Gary Gallagher was always one of my favorite experts they used to have on the Civil War Documentaries on the History Channel growing up. Beats Shelby Foote by a mile and doesn't get enough credit

    Clean sweep for the Confederacy.
From the neat Robert E. Lee and Nathan Bedford Forrest versions, the substantial Thomas Jackson and J.E.B Stuart versions and the monumental James Longstreet and John Bell Hood versions.
They do look better with the wearer in a gray uniform and in the saddle.

I don't think I ever realized McClellan had a soul patch. I mean, when I picture him in my head I see it, but I never really *thought* about.
And look at past Garry with the super long hair! That's wild.
Also, Gary's Sherman joke. I totally chuckled.

Very fascinating video! I have been intrigued at the recent popularity in beards. One perspective mentioned is the return of military servicemen from combat deployments in the Middle East. Over there, it was common (specifically in Afghanistan) to have a beard. Special Operation Units grew beards to immerse into the culture and establish close rapport with tribes. Their tough and masculine persona would certainly be revered and respected. I see a similar correlation to the past popularity of cowboy hats and boots, harking the rough and rugged Wild West.

I blame my mix Basque, Scandinavian and Irish genetics on my sparse side burns, thick at the chin and liveable mustache. Getting older seems to be helping in thickness. Since adulthood I only shaved once for a court case, my lawyer insisted. I havent shaved or trimmed for 27 yrs, main reasons, it is time consuming and I think I look better with it.

    Well, very interesting video.
I could help you about the origin of some beards. You may know them as well.
I am sure that Burnside copied definitely the Austrian emperor Franz Joseph's beard-moustache. They are similar.
The multiply curly moustache of Elder is deffinitely the Haynau moustache. The austrian commander Field Marshal Lieutenant Julius Jacob von Haynau had a huge moustache, and it was multiply curled, but it was a little bit thicker than Elder's.
And about the fashion of beards in the Civil War armies (which is unusual for armies) remember me very much the fact that in the 1848-49 Hungarian-Austrian-Russian war (called the Hungarian Freedom War) mostly the Hungarian generals liked to have huge beards.
Lafayette McClaws and Jeb Stuart has very similar beards with the Hungarian generals of 1848-49 János Damjanich, György Kemtty and Araisztid Dessewffy. The first and the last were executed by the Austrians in 6 October 1849, but the huge bearded Kmetty escaped, fought in the Crimean War as a Turkish general, then moved to London where he died in 1865. He could somehow inspire generals over the Ocean for growng huge beards. I tried to put here links, but youtube deleted my comments with links, but you can search on google pictures with them.

I grew up in Hanover, visited Gettysburg multiple times as a kid, played on the rocks at devil's den, hiked around on little round top.
Gained interest in the civil war here the last few years and haven't been back to visit since I was a kid. Crazy what you take for granted as a kid.

General Burnside’s beard was dope and General Grant’s square-cut beard was also dope. General Jackson had a nice beard too. Dang, the professor is correct. General J.E.B. Stuart’s was also excellent.

Should consider the fact that until the War, US Army regulations prohibited facial hair with exception for moustaches for the mounted arm. The Lee photograph with his son was taken while still an officer of the Corps of Engineers, his moustache coming with assignment to the 2d Cavalry following his transfer to the Cavalry.

Patrick Cleburn's for me.. Or, Breckinridge. Lee, didn't want to be known for posterity as "Granny". I "heard" once that Stuart grew a beard to hide his ugly face, that he was known previously as "Beauty", to his peers... true?
