Thanks for posting, had looked for this play over the years with no luck. I remember this game when I was young’n, and the Packers were not a good team or at least their record didn’t show it but they would have some awesome moments like this during the season at least. Plus at 12 years old I just really loved watching my Packers and wasn’t jaded by anything yet and just enjoyed watching my team! :)
That had to have been the highlight of Forrest Gregg's coaching tenure in Green Bay. And the irony is, Walter Stanley didn't do what Gregg instructed him to.
People who aren't from Michigan may be a bit confused by the crowd noise for the opposing team. West of L'Anse in the Upper Peninsula is pretty much Packer country. It's 10-11 hours from the Central UP to Detroit, and just a few to Green Bay. The annual Green Bay game in Detroit quite often has far more Packer fans than Lions fans. Since Favre, if the game is late in the season and the Lions are out of contention I've seen the place pretty much entirely Green and gold.
I was there! It was fantastic! IIRC, there were a few huge turns in momentum. IIRC, the Pack got up by 10 early, the Lions rolled off 20 straight, then the Packers did the same. When the Packers held the Lions to that punt, you could just feel that the momentum had turned again and something big might happen- and it did!
Walter Stanley is incredible! What a talent. What a football player. The team may not have been so good then. Yet Walter and others gave us a chance to win. I loved watching them!
@@7hew0lv3r1ne That's Pat Summerall, he was a LEGEND. He had more talent as an announcer on his left pinky fingernail than Joe Buck does in his entire body.
@@Jwend392 I know who he is. But people complain about Buck showing no emotion? It doesn't exactly sound like Summerall is jumping up and down in the booth here.
Summerall was most likely hammered by this time it was the end of the 4th qtr after all, he admitted after retirement he literally drank during broadcasts. I’ll never forget once as the game ended he said to “be sure to watch the next game between the Jacksonville Jagoffs...I mean the Jaguars” I’ve never been able to find the video/audio of it but I’ve read on the internet other people talking about it. My family went nuts after Stanley’s return and woke up my cousin that was like a week old at the time, never forgotten this play, I’m 44 now.
Pack just signed Walter's son Demitri!
Son rise, son set..
So so good!!!
Aww, man, seeing Mark Lee there...He was a really good CB who would have gotten a lot of attention if he'd played elsewhere.
Pause it at 0:19 ... the guy had NO blockers and 6 defenders bearing down on him.
Good looking out!!!

I went to high school with Walter Stanley! Go Walt Go!
I played against him in HS. Awesome.
Gorgeous G on the sleeves!

Best game of a truly awful season... thanks for posting.

Maybe the best game ever between two teams below .500

I miss John
If I'm remembering the right, Forrest Gregg wanted Walter Stanley to down the punt return, but W. Stanley didn't listen to him.
Yep
Yes, the ONLY game my dad watched with me alone. Died months later
This is a fond memory.
I wonder if Walter Stanley won the "Turkey Leg" prize.
To answer your question, Walter Stanley was featured on the post-game show, but the Turkey Leg award had not yet been invented. Happy Thanksgiving!
Turducken
Thanksgiving
I remember it well
Go Pack Go 🧀🇺🇲🏈
Look at all those empty seats!!
44-40. What a nail biter.
What a terrible call on an amazing return
This announcer is the worst
People saying Joe Buck shows no emotion have never listened to this announcer.

You must not know who they are
