It will be interesting to see if Bowie realizes that eternal novelty ties one to the wheel of sorrows, pardon me, to the joyful recurrence.

There seems to be a bit of a problem in the overall analysis. You had contrasted seeking joy above a neutral state with seeking the release from suffering, but here the joy is only the initial hope of the misfits that they may be released from the suffering of being misfits. The ecstacy seems to be only the expectation of fitting in to the thing they just discovered they fit into. But that novelty will wear off, and at best (if it works) it will only be a release from suffering.

The joy comes from the transformation. A transformative experience is a joyful, ecstatic experience. You can find evidence for this throughout history. Indeed, it is a temporary experience, and this is the main problem the album is dealing with.

@@thebronze3098 I must ask your pardon, I had accidentally conflated your history of psychedelia with this series (as I'm watching them somewhat in parallel). Your discussion of seeking joy above a neutral state vs escape from suffering was in that series, not here.
