Some of the retro formats are crazy prices. I’m with you with the looking, always gotta check out what’s around
I know, I’m sorry Dave. Think it’s a show that never really got watched in my house growing up so I just don’t have the same love of it than the vast majority. The wife loves it though.
I like it, I think it's a great show, but I've seen all of the episodes so many times that I've not had the desire to watch it for years, same thing with The Young Ones unfortunately.
I have all my old VHS tapes still in storage at my parents house. They aren't rare or worth anything but I can't bring myself to throw them away! Haven't actually used them in over 20 years as I have them all on Blu-ray now. Certainly space is an issue though and they will have to go at some point.
It’s weird looking through them. As much as I felt the nostalgia of them. I’d no real interest in trying to give any a real look. To be fair though, the titles that were left were all pretty standard releases and do have alternatives that are better quality and easy to find. I’m glad I took the time to have a dig through them though.
I like retro stuff and nostalgia from the 80s & 90’s. Trouble with me is I’m a hoarder and have almost run out of space in my home. It’s a tricky decision but with old vhs videos you’re unlikely to play them again 🤔
Yeah, despite the nostalgia of looking through them. I had zero interest in trying to look at playing any. They’ll all be donated. No sense in keeping something I no longer ‘appreciate’ in the same way.
Hi, Half of the boutique label releases are now larger than a VHS. Whatever happened to "Space is at a premium" talking point? If those recorded tapes have ads on them, there is a segment of the collector community that buys them on eBay. For me, It's time to reduce my collection from approximately 10k pieces to 1k pieces. After 40 years of collecting I only used maybe half of what I obtained and My tastes have also changed. It will be just as much fun to watch then sell my acquisitions as it was to buy and watch them. Cheers
The 80s video shop where I’m donating these VHS have someone that will grab some of these to scour through and hunt for old commercials and things. The shop will also be able to make use of the tapes and the cases. If not for display then they’ll be repurposed. My collection numbers are coming down now too. My space is certainly at a premium and I’m considering more about what I’m keeping hold of and why. I can’t justify keeping any of the VHS. The boutique labels certainly do seem to be pushing the sizes of some releases up. Every limited edition seems bigger than a VHS case now
I do love VHS, I recently collected a load, some stuff is so much cooler, I had an ex rental big box driller killer, it's the best way to watch that film, grainy old hammer horror looks superb too, they also look great as a massive wall display, the reason I got rid is simply the lack of room, I tried selling on ebay in sets, but it just wasnt worth the time and hassle to post them all, I gave hundreds away just to save hassle. I think there's an intimacy with physical media that you just don't get with streaming. I converted loads of stuff that was recorded off tv in the 90s and have uploaded it to my youtube, which feels like the right thing to do, they are just going to rot anyway.
I had a chat with the place I’m donating the tapes to. They know a guy that will take all those recorded from TV and hunt through them for anything worth pulling off and digitising. It’s sure a better option than just binning them. Some of the covers are great but I’ve always swung more toward laser disc for a lot of the cover art collecting reasons. I do think some of these upgrades look far too good for the movies. Shame none of the boutique labels offer a non upgraded version there alongside the nice shiny remaster.
All dependent upon the individual. For me - No. I was born mid 70’s so lived through VHS. Had a large collection and sold when dvd came about. I was happy to see the width reduction from vhs tape to dvd. Was happy with no drop out lines and machines chewing tapes. I have a couple to VHS tapes that have been gifted to me. And happy with that for Nostalgic reasons. But I wouldn’t collect them now wish to put in a visually and audibly inferior format.
Yeah, I don’t think I had any temptation to try and watch any of these. I remember the tapes getting chewed and having mild freak outs about it. At the time of VHS through the 80s, my dad used to be a tv and VHS engineer and used to fix things up for folks on the kitchen table. I saw loads of things that got jammed into VHS flaps… cheese, necklace and a grass snake are the ones that stick in mind… not all at the same time. Think I sold a majority of tapes to a local video store for about 20p each at the time.
I only tend to keep pre-cert VHS and rarer boxsets or things I can't upgrade. There are occasional titles you can only get this way, for example The Godfather VHS boxset which puts the films in chronological order seen on US TV has, to my knowledge, never had a 'genuine' disc release. For most standard VHS, I kept the paper sleeve, and have a folder of these, but the tapes and boxes had to go! It is a very nostalgic format but it's easy to forget the problems VHS had and we're certainly in a good place now with BR and 4k picture quality. Thanks for another fun video!
Those pre cert releases can cost a fortune too. The guys at the video shop like to get the ‘big box’ rental cases and some movies in them have started to become costly. They do a great job though. Might take a tour around it for the next video. Sounds like you have a quality collection, sadly most of what I had were pretty standard and generic (well, what I showed on the video at least) I remember having to jump up from the sofa to adjust tracking for some VHS. And then my dad being fussy about bringing a tape from the rental place if it had been cold out… couldn’t put it in straight away apparently because of how cold it was 🤷🏼♂️
@@PhillwithadoubleL I'd certainly never entertain buying pre-certs now as the prices are totally crazy. Most of mine were car boot sale pickups from around 2001 when people were giving away VHS! Think my biggest ever score was the Alien Facehugger VHS boxset for £5 and that's never leaving the collection! My collection in the 90s was mainly generic tapes and most of those have now gone, replaced with generic DVDs haha!. Rather like what's happening with audio cassettes, I think people have it in their minds that VHS was this wonderful forgotten technology that's still amazing and the truth is it really wasn't. It was amazing at the time because it's all we had but the leap in quality of tranfers has gone up and up in the digital age and VHS isn't comparable to BR/4k in the same way vinyl is with digital music. Ahhh, tracking was a nightmare, my Dad used to ban us from fiddling with it but most of our tapes were so worn out they needed constant adjustment! Never heard the thing about the cold, that's really interesting and probably why our player got knackered so often. Thanks for the reply fella!
@@Tobeshadow I stepped up from VHS pretty quickly, I’d discovered laserdisc a year or so prior to when DVD came out so at the time I was already making the leap from tape to disc. DVD just cemented that. Particularly when the recordable dvd players came out.
I’d say the film or TV show is the priority, not the format. The only reason I’d keep or buy a VHS or a Laserdisc if there was a significant difference in the film that never made to later formats. The Star Wars trilogy for example.
Perfect example there. Star Wars 🙌🏼 I’ve previously cleared out my VHS… and these will all be moved along too… only things I’m struggling with parting with are a few laserdiscs and a few DVD.
I'm pretty sure SP was normal length when recording (ie) E180min 3hr VHS tape was three hrs and LP made the tape 6hrs E360 of recording time And Bad Boys came out in 1995
Yes, realised my mistake when editing. LP for Long Play not slow play 🤦🏼♂️ Bad boys came out in 95… for those growing up late 70s / early 80s it woulda been the right sort of age for getting that sucker in the collection.
I lovevthe VHS format, big cases and tapes. Got about hundred left, mainly ones that hasnt got dvd release with finnish subtitles (Copycat, Mixed Nuts, Hawk the Slayer) or ones I realy like (Hudson Hawk, Conan Barbarian). Also, I have saved some big boxed rental tapes just becouse the art work (Forbitten World, Barbarians),.. those make nice degorations on dvd shelves. But yeah, those you got, unless there isnt any super favorites among those, I would donate/trashed them. Except, Due South, 24 boxset, Gremlins ...if not for youreself then for someone else, a little eyecandy/memorybilia from old days. Actually, around here its guite common to collectors buy old vhs releases for artwork to their shelves. Sad though, theres nothing wrong about VHS even today. Went through some of my old tapes last summer, they still looked quite good in 28" television 👍 friend of my has one of those small tv/vhs combo devices on his cabin. With about couple dozen of his favorite movies/tv series episodes... perfect for a rainy days during cottage vacation.
I got the Due South DVD box set so no massive need to keep those VHS. To be honest, the VHS artwork doesn’t really sway me, I lean more towards laserdisc for the art, think I moved away from VHS and more towards laserdisc for a good while through my more ‘formative’ years.
@@PhillwithadoubleL laserdisc are nice looking releases. Conan Barbarian would be nice to own but dont have good place to but it. And those are way more harder to storage than vhs and steelbooks 🤔 About artworks. Seen only about couple dozen laserdisc covers, all of them has been just normal "photographig" posters. I mean, around here most popular (and expensive) ones are old rental vhs tapes. Those were little bigger cases than those normal vhs reases they sold in stores. And the coverarts pwere many times made by "drawing" ...little like comicbook covers. I loved laserdiscs. Still have a few discs but I sold the player a few years back. Yeah, All them VHS were pretty standard. Couple of big boxes but nothing of note. Had to clear out the HD DVD player when I just didn’t use it for many months / years. Wanted to limit the amount of boxes under the TV.
I have a few VHS tapes from when I was a kid and I don't think I'll part with them (I only have about 25 commercial tapes and another 25ish recorded tapes). None of them are movies and most of them are football tapes e.g. classics like Danny Baker's Freak Football or Alistair McGowan's Football Backchat😆. I do have two X files tapes - even though I have series 1 - 9 on DVD. (File 1 The Unopened file and File 3 Abduction). I did have Gremlins 2 many years ago as a kid on VHS but I think that was given away when my parents cleared out their VHS films. I do miss that Gremlins 2 tape for the sole reason it had that weird bit in the middle where the Gremlins invade a John Wayne film whereas in the DVD version Hulk Hogan is shown watching the film in the cinema instead. I bought a cheap VHS player (about £20) years ago for the purpose of digitising my small collection of mostly Football/Soccer Season Reviews and recorded wrestling PPVs. Yes VHS tapes do take up a lot of space!
I had loads of XFiles at one point. There were a few shows that I recorded way back. I think some of those must have been the first to go. Many upgraded to the dvd box sets.
I primarly collect blu ray but i have a few shelves of VHS, i mostly restrict my VHS to movies i absolutely love and want on multiple formats or old cartoons i grew up with or otherwise cant get on bluray
Do you still have a VHS player too ? I think if I had the space a couple I might have kept, but admittedly I wouldn’t have ever played them. It would have been more just for the nostalgia and display.
Unfortunately there is no market in sell through tapes, they are basically worthless. The market however is crazy for ex rental tapes and pre-cert tapes. Those are the ones worth keeping.
The video store I’m taking these too will repurpose the cases and tapes if not being used for display. They create some cool retro stuff. All these tapes will be donated to them

That's why when I see VHS tapes in pawn stores and garage sales I always have a look
Some of the retro formats are crazy prices. I’ve been keeping an eye on a couple of laserdiscs for the artwork for display, not paying the crazy prices though, I’d be better off just trying to get a high quality print… especially when I can’t play the things anyway.
I’m with you with the looking, always gotta check out what’s around
You must the only person I’ve ever heard say they’re not a fan of only fools & horses! Best British show ever made! (imo)
I know, I’m sorry Dave.
Think it’s a show that never really got watched in my house growing up so I just don’t have the same love of it than the vast majority. The wife loves it though.
Make that +1. I too was never really a fan, although did like the Batman & Robin sketch.
@@mintteaandmartialarts yay 🙌🏼 I’m not alone !
I like it, I think it's a great show, but I've seen all of the episodes so many times that I've not had the desire to watch it for years, same thing with The Young Ones unfortunately.
Movies and series on streaming services get altered, censored or removed. Some movies in their original form are only available on VHS.
True, more common place now for the digital tinkering with the streaming services I think.
Ha, havent thought about Due South in decades!
I have the DVD box set but only recently discovered that there’s HD versions on UA-cam. I think it’s a great show.
Certainly worth another look
Sounds like you have a quality collection, sadly most of what I had were pretty standard and generic (well, what I showed on the video at least)
I remember having to jump up from the sofa to adjust tracking for some VHS.
Dan Curtis Curse of the black widow vhs 1977 is a good movie only on Vhs.
Amicus film Danger Route spy thriller 1967 has never been on disc!
@@stuartobrien78 it’s always surprising to me when titles haven’t moved up to disc or digital in some way.
I’d say the film or TV show is the priority, not the format. The only reason I’d keep or buy a VHS or a Laserdisc if there was a significant difference in the film that never made to later formats. The Star Wars trilogy for example.
Perfect example there. Star Wars 🙌🏼
I’ve previously cleared out my VHS… and these will all be moved along too… only things I’m struggling with parting with are a few laserdiscs and a few DVD.
I'm pretty sure SP was normal length when recording (ie) E180min 3hr VHS tape was three hrs and LP made the tape 6hrs E360 of recording time
And Bad Boys came out in 1995
Yes, realised my mistake when editing. LP for Long Play not slow play 🤦🏼♂️
Bad boys came out in 95… for those growing up late 70s / early 80s it woulda been the right sort of age for getting that sucker in the collection.
And those are way more harder to storage than vhs and steelbooks 🤔
About artworks. Or just super stupid looking 🤪 but still, vhs is good enoug for me... no empty wallspace anywhere to put huge posters.
@@PhillwithadoubleL dont know did you have big cases in rental stores 🙄 did or not, you should check a video from a Finland's 🇫🇮 most popular (movies/collecting) youtubers (english) channel, VideoTalk . ...and the video I am talking about is named: The Grand Tour Through My Home ...that guy has guita a collection 👍
@@DVDhoarder I had a unit special for the laserdiscs at one point. Kinda difficult to read the spines sometimes though, especially if the disc had moved and ‘blown out’ the spine.
I’ll give that video a look when I get the chance. Still love looking through the retro stuff.
Yeah all mainstream VHS releases nothing to get excited about. Now, if in that box you had treasures like pre cert video nasties etc then we would be talking! I actually keep a working VHS player, DVD player, HD DVD player alongside my UHD player and want to add a laserdisc player to my arsenal 👍🍺
I loved laserdiscs. Still have a few discs but I sold the player a few years back.
Yeah,
All them VHS were pretty standard.
All these tapes will be donated to them
great Tony Scott films! Must keep those just for legacy!
I dunno man, I have them on Blu Ray. Dont massively ‘need’ the VHS.
I remember seeing Crimson Tide at the cinema. Loved it. In fact, it’s gotta be due a rewatch again soon.
@@PhillwithadoubleL Crimson Tide is top 3 Tony Scott for me. I also have a VHS video coming out soon (Ive been seeing a lot of them on UA-cam lately) lol but I have really been diving back into them.
@@thelastmoviestanding I’ll keep an eye out for that. Have you been watching VHS tapes again for it ? How did you find that experience ?
@@PhillwithadoubleL Dude I've been watching VHS's a lot lately & I talk about it a lot more in my video coming out but for me, & I may be alone but for me, with VHS I know exactly what im getting, im not watching to focus on quality like I feel I do with 4Ks, im watching because I genuinely love the movie & I can just focus on that. Plus the nostalgia factor is pretty high lol
@@thelastmoviestanding that’s the thing with the increasing quality of these thing. I see more reviews of black levels and audio format than I do of the movies and extras… the stuff that really should be most important
I threw some of my vhs tapes in the trash that as movies were not really great but also the pic quality in them had suffered. You see vhs movies for 0.5€ or 1€ at flea markets and no one is buying them.
No, I still see them knocking around too. DVD seems to be suffering the same to some extent. Piles of them on flea markets and car boot sales and no one is interested anymore. I think I lot of the general public now are more interested in the streaming over actually owning.
@@PhillwithadoubleL pretty much yes. I myself have come down from the high horse so to speak and if there’s a movie I really want to see but no bluray/4K around, then I’m perfecly happy when I find a dvd from thrift store etc.
From time to time I try streaming services but the experience is always the same: you get good picture, blurry, good, blurry. All in one session. Perhaps a even faster connection would help but meh. I will stick to discs.
A small offtopic: I just watched the Northman for the first time last week (from disc ofc) and instantly during the beach scene I was like ”omg is that Phill!” And surely enough, yes it was you as I checked Imdb. Good movie, you had a fun little role in it.
@@GRORGvideot ha, good spot on The Northman. It was a really good experience being able to work on that one. Over time I’ll be sharing more about some of my acting work on the channel. I’ve mentioned a couple of bits during live streams but would be good to do a couple of actual videos around it
I have approx 6-7 VHS tapes at home but then again i still have a VHS player as well (Stored in a low use room). I will never throw out my VHS copy of Robocop 2 as it along with the first film were some of my favorite movies as a kid and i like the bigger artwork and nostalgia. I recently bought a Simpsons cartoon VHS from a charity shop as i remember renting it as a child. If only you had Robocop 1 on VHS id want that. Also whats wrong with Dirty Dancing ... i am a bloke and love that movie its a massive cult film, it may have even scored higher then 'Top Gun Maverick' if IMDB had existed in the 80's.
I had the first Robocop on VHS at one point. No more though, can’t remember where it went to.
Nothing wrong with Dirty Dancing. I have it on Blu Ray… and digital I think. The VHS though, that was the wife’s.
I keep hold of some of my laserdiscs for the same sort of reasons. That cover art !
@@PhillwithadoubleL Even if you decide to throw them, you could take the cover art out of all the cases (Good ones) and make it into a piece of wall artwork in a frame. I like the Gremlins VHS, thats cool, dont bin that.
I don't miss tapes either type. Them getting eaten by player, so worn the tape just breaks, or the rr ff . That is not something I wanna go back to. Though I do still own a vhs player. I have my copy of Rockula on vhs because I can't afford the few discs that show up for sale.
And having to get up to adjust tracking 😂 I remember those days.
Have you looked into getting your VHS of Rockula converted to digital so you can put it onto a disc ?
@@PhillwithadoubleL No , I keep hoping shout I think it was will just release it again. Not that they are any cheaper most times ha.
@@halloweenlady4073 nope, there’s a couple of shout titles I keep looking at but not willing to pay their prices
I would keep the books and it's a matter of fact I had to get rid of my VHS player because it tore up but there were a few VHS tapes that I keep and I finally replaced the my VHS player but if you're not planning on getting another one I say get rid of the VHS but I don't think you should be getting rid of your books
I’m right there with you. Books will be staying for sure.
The VHS have now all been donated to a good place. 80s video shop have taken them in. I’ll be doing a tour of the place in my next video 🙌🏼
Dad's army classic film
Not to my tastes really. A lot of older relatives used to love that stuff… I grew up to hate it being on as I didn’t like them as kids… similar with stuff like Last of the Summer Wine. Ugh. Can’t bring myself to even try any of them now.
Unless they are pre cert, video nasties, first releases or late releases (such as Star Wars Episode 3 VHS) they are not worth anything.
Nope, all donated now. Had a little video around the shop as I was there for another nostalgia kick
Tbh there all terrible vhs I only collect horror
Only the pretty ‘standard’ releases left of the collection. Most of my other stuff got sold on. There’s were selected more for the father in law when they got passed on to him. He wouldn’t have appreciated the horror or anything… a little more unique.
He doesn't know how to use the shells! 😂
