  • Unfortunately this happens to all entertainment journalists at one point in their career. They ask questions that the talent or people around them don't like. In this episode I am sharing some of the uncomfortable situations I have been in myself and some other behind the scenes secrets. Hope you like it.

As a Swiss person I can't believe that there are celebrities like Bill Murray out there who let other people wait for 5 hrs and even have the audacity to show up with bad manners. This just shows once again that Hollywood is some type of "parallel universe", these personalities are only surrounded by enablers who let these things fly. If Bill Murray would live within the Swiss society, where politeness, good manners and punctuality are highly valued, he would have been humbled rather quickly.

I have never really understood celebrity worship. To me, celebrities are ordinary people who are grossly over compensated for singing, dancing, or acting. I do not begrudge them their obscene amounts of remuneration, but I find deeply repellent the insufferable arrogance, entitlement, and incivility some celebrities exhibit. And when barely famous, minor celebrities, such as Blake Lively, show their authentic ugly selves, I feel vindicated. Blake Lively was not having a bad day, she is just a bullying harridan.

I used to be a music journalist for an alternative weekly in Toronto. My worst experience ever was interviewing Tom Jones. He was promoting some dance record that was pretty awful. The interview had to take place in a limousine en route to a suburban mall where he was signing records. He was so distant and blasé even though I was trying my best to ask him good questions. When we finally arrived at the mall, I just wanted to go home, but the record company promotional person insisted that I get an autograph. I feigned enthusiasm and said, ‘Sure. That would be alright.’ I was then asked to join the lineup of seniors waiting to get their records signed. Somewhere there’s a photo of me in the lineup probably wondering to myself if Engelbert Humperdinck would pull this shit. My second worst interview was with Diana Krall. 😅

I can imagine it is difficult to do interviews-for actors and journalists. The setting is professional for both actors and interviewers, but you want it to appear casual and friendly. Celebrities are critiqued so harshly for everything they say which means they want to ensure the topics they are asked they feel comfortable presenting. I have seen journalists asking uncomfortable questions to get a shocking interview. Now we are seeing how actors who become famous may feel the power has shifted and they can make demands of the interview.
Mutual respect and an understanding of the goals of each party would go a long way. It seems very challenging!

@@bhsbmdCompletely agree. It is classic poor etiquette to venture into the subject of age with anyone, particularly people who are not close friends or family. Even with close people there is risk of someone saying something awfully impertinent. Expert William Hanson would also agree. The point of good manners is to help other people feel comfortable and respected. 💡

@@fbmbassist I mean 50 is a big year in anyone's life. Like 18, 21, or 40. And Jason Statham didn't seem to mind, his handler minded. Every actor's birthday is a google search away. It would be hard to find out your age, but It's very easy for me to find out Jason Statham's age. There is ageism in Hollywood, particularly for women. But studio executives aren't finding out in interviews an actor's age. They already know.
So it's a bit extreme to suggest because Hollywood is obsessed with age directly leads to her question about his 50th birthday at all potentially impacting his career. That's not how it works.

There was an interview Sofia Coppola did where she brought up her anxiety with getting him to do "Lost in Translation". They didn't know until the rest of the cast was casted and the crew was picked that he would agree to do it. He ignored phone calls, made people wait for hours on end to start shooting. I don’t think the title of your video is accurate. With a lot of these celebrities, it’s their PR person, their staff that is setting these arbitrary rules, not the celebrity. Certainly some celebrities themselves are rude, but I didn’t see that in your video. If you’ve ever interviewed Paul McCartney, he is an absolute gem. He answered anything and everything we asked and was humble and funny. When his staff tried to physically haul him away, he said no, he wasn’t finished talking to the journalists and signing autographs. This occurred two times when I was interviewing him for Billboard.

I witnessed first hand a Jason Statham situation and it was so uncomfortable for everyone! The celebrity I was with was so lovely and was genuinely laughing about what was happening but his handlers (given for that day, not hand-picked by said celebrity) were not happy and complained. To anyone on the receiving end of the complaint, it would appear that it was, in fact, the celebrity doing the complaining. I had nothing to do with that particular situation, just a spectator to it and immediately knew how it looked. I felt horrible for him because he was truly a nice person and visibly went out of his way to NOT be difficult. All the way around, I would not wish to switch places with any famous person and their public life.

    I am not understanding this.
Definitely there is NO excuse for actors or their entourage to be dismissive and rude in a scheduled interview. They should act professional. No excuses.
But on the other hand, if the ONLY reason you have been granted the interview in the first place is in promotion of something then why isn't that what you would prepare for and ask questions about?
That is the professional agreement. From both sides.
Why would celebrities want to talk to a journalist (or "journalist") asking random personal questions if that wasn't the professional agreement?
Why do you think they are agreeing to sit down with you?
Or maybe I am completely wrong and the original arrangement is for entirely open ended conversations with people they have never met before?

I have met quite a few celebrities (mostly actors) - most are simply decent and trying to navigate people who see them as an object instead of actually treating them like a person - HOWEVER, I have met some real disrespectful, arrogant a-holes who simply believe their own press and treat people who are genuinely respectful and polite like trash (dismissive, rude, insulting, etc..). I even met one while acting as an escort who simply could not or would not turn off their ridiculous personae to the degree you realize everything about them is fake and they really don't respect anyone who is a fan and simply plays their part for their own aggrandization. Toxic, narcissistic. and then you mean some others who genuinely are nice, and very endearing. I found that NOT talking about their movie, or anything to do with celebrity typically works to put them at ease (at least the nice ones) and you may get to connect with them as a person - then if you meet them again - they remember that. Wound up having dinner a few times just as people who enjoy a meal instead of anything else.

While I dont agree with celebrities being rude and agree that they should be definitely respectful to journalists: Even celebrities should not be completely dehumanized and should be allowed to have a choice whether they want to talk about something or not. Otherwise it'd end up being dictatorship from the side of the press. Respect goes both ways. There should be boundaries on both sides. I believe in honest and respectful communication and coming to a compromise that both sides are ok with. Also, it's not always up to you to decide what is personal questions or not. For transparency's sake, it should be noted that Anthony Hopkins is autistic. Neurodivergent people do not always react in the expected way, and they typically mask during social interactions. The junket system is like a huge amount of forced social interactions, condensed over a very short amount of time, stressful enough for neurotypical celebrities.
Imagine that stress magnified x10, that incrementally increases with each possible repetition of the same questions. What can they do? They either leave to protect themselves or they stay ,and either push through and melt down once they leave, or worse, during an interview.
People forget that, in a society where neurodivergent people exist in all walks of life, there are going to be celebs who are privately diagnosed with adhd, autism, bpd, bipolar or a combo of several, for whom, this part of their job is something they find an actual living nightmare.
With that said, I know some actors actually appreciate it when you switch the questions up ( even if their pr person is giving you daggers)

I often think that actors go into that profession because they lack the integrity to do a regular job. Of course that's not true of everyone, but I can not imagine getting paid millions for a relatively short, cushy, job, and not doing all of the work to the best of my ability. They'll tell you that acting is skillful, but is it really? There's so many of them, and they're just people who are capable of being a puppet for a short amount of time before retreating back into unemployment. The Elton John cut off was rough. Like the movie is Sherlock Gnomes. Not that there's anything wrong with animation, I'm an animator myself, but like people from live action don't really care about our profession. In almost 2 decades in animation, I've "worked" with many celebrities. Like 2 ever bothered to show up to the studio and see what they were putting their name to: Vince Vaughn and Judy Greer. They barely interact with animated productions, whether they are actors, musicians, producers on the film. Maybe if it were the Lion King, he'd want to focus on that for the prestige, a "real" movie in their eyes, but Sherlock Gnomes...no. I think he could have answered your question. I get that these celebrities are there to promote a movie, so the powers that be want you to focus your questions on that topic. But how dare they tell a journalist what they can and can’t ask??? A journalist should be free to ask whatever question they’d like and it is up to the interviewee to choose how to respond. (At this point, might as well just hand the interviewers a card with a bunch of pre-determined questions and stop pretending like this is a real interview.)
Instead of having handlers gate-keep the conversation, they should train the actors how to steer the conversation back to the movie.

I have some Nordic acquaintances and like how they are direct. They don’t worry too much what other people think and stick to their values. You seem like that, too 😊

I would think in this day and age you could actually become a major personality by being the tough reporter who interviews celebrities and shames them when they behave badly - it worked for Wendy Williams and people like that.

To be fair - some questions in press junkets ARE rediculious

Thank you for your honesty & sharing! Clearly you have a passion for journalism as it’s not an easy profession or for the faint of heart. I’m shocked Elton didn’t defend & answer your question as it was a good one you clearly put thought into. Sadly, it appears his bar is set higher for his music than for interviews. Shame on him.

Kjersti, do you know Mr Hopkins is on the spectrum? I don't know if you know much about how this can impact people.

@@Flaawsometalk That's good of you, thank you. I'm not saying that was the reason for the behaviour (we can never know) but it is always a possibility. I thought that it was important to highlight because my son is on the spectrum.

There's that old saying about don't meet your heroes. I'm a huge Elton fan and to his credit here, it wasn't so much him shutting your question down but someone off camera (was it his manager and husband David Furnish?) On a related note, his longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin treated many fans poorly when he did book signings last year promoting his snooze-inducing autobiography Scattershot. He refused to sign anything in one of the cities on the tour other than his book and didn't want to take photos with anybody. One of my friends and fellow Elton fans, who is an extremely talented artist, went to see him and he was rude not only to her but her husband. Her husband started to slide his copy of the book towards him to sign and Bernie admonished him, saying "Don't do that, it'll ruin the tablecloth." She was also hoping to give him a piece of her artwork that depicts Elton and him; he wouldn't even look at it. Sorry, but he's a first-class pr*ck. But he is a different story when you visit one of his art shows, because it's a chance for him to sell something. And really comes across as a misogynist in his book. Ugh.
