Here's an interesting little experiment for you. I poured a dram of Glendronach 21 (we both agree thats fantastic) and a dram of Springbank 15 .. I spent an hour nosing and tasting the 2 .. and you know what, SB 15 actually has EVERYTHING the 21 has to offer, only .. a speck less sherry, and the mild though present smoke. So .. the 15 (for me) is actually more complex and interesting than the 21. They're both SO similar though who would even think that based on their profiles?

SB15 is my first Campbeltown whisky. I hear a lot about tasting Campbeltown funk and I think there is a bit of that in SB15. Kind of a slight taste of strong cheese for me. Love it.

Mark this was an inspirational video tasting for me. I had my first bottle of Springbank 15 apr. 2 years ago and as I continued my whisky journey I always had fond memories of this one so much so I purchased a SB 12 Cask Strength. I'm not sure if it was me and my palate or a bad batch but my bottle of the 12 CS was just terrible even after one year opened. I will just have to get another one at some point to revisit. I think I paid $80 US when I purchased mt SB 15 2 years ago. Just checking now in entire USA I see the cheapest price as $140 US so if you can buy at that price you mentioned you may want to buy a case as the world economy is in the process of skyrocketing out of control so you may want to buy your favorite whiskies now before things get worse. This video presentation is making me open the 2nd bottle of SB 15 I purchased back 2 years ago and now I can't resist opening tonight. I will make sure I cheers to you when I do!........Cheers!

Gman nice to see you! Thank you so much. Well I do hope cracking it is a good thing, I’m guessing like many distilleries going back in time either by having older bottles like yours or graduating to a higher age statement seems to be one way to find the sweet spot. $140 USD is crazy. Usually USA is cheaper than Canada!
I did buy a backup, but knowing how much I like it now I’ll try to get another couple next time they come in. So true about the economic correction going on. There is going to be crazy times ahead!!

Great review and really making me excited for my bottle I just grabbed while I was in the US for work from BC. Only thing missing is the statement of what year your bottle is from since Springbank slightly changes each year. All Springbank have a date stamp near the bottom back side of the bottle.

Another cracking video! I don’t see/buy as much Springbank as I would like, but I cherish my 10/12CS/15 bottles. My 15 has black label. Noticed the 10 I just bought as back up for my orange 10 is in a more black box. Anyway…love it all. I found this 15 a bit difficult at first, with a sour note, but that has dropped away over the months it has been opened. I think I prefer the 12CS, but love this one too. Fun dramming along with you. Thanks.

Springbank 15 is one of my 'Perfect' Whiskies. Hazelburn 14 2019 Oloroso, as well as the elusive Springbank 10 Local barley matured in Oloroso cask are also on that list and is very similar. Sadly as many have said Springbank is hard to get and or expensive.

@@WhiskyWhistle I really like it. Some people say it isn’t as good as the older one but please, we all know that was way older juice on balance so the comparison to me isn’t apples to apples. If you just set this one apart and judge it on its own quality I think it is fantastic. Great balance, depth, complexity and it even has that old damp library type of note ever present in the background that I usually equate with something from Campbeltown. I think they know what they are doing at Glendronach and I suspect their casks are superb. Hope they keep it that way.

Sean - yes all malt heads have always purchased them, but it seems all whisky enthusiasts are after them as well now. I’m certain sales have nearly doubled in the last 5 years, and most assuredly some portion of the increased fervour for Springbank is owed to the labels. Their new eco friendly positioning and selling bottles naked(no box) will no doubt get even more press and push sales even higher. Unfortunately as it is a private company it’s hard to get data. I did find that production increased from 160,000 litres to 275,000 litres from 2004 to 2019. The new labels came out January 2017. But I digress. One things for sure, they make damn good whisky!

You make a good point - even the 10 isn’t that easy to come by all the time!
I remember coming back to Canada and seeing crazy things like Lagavulin 8 for $100. Who would be crazy enough to pay $100 for 8 year old whisky? I thought. With a few exceptions, it seems that was a harbinger of things to come. Makes me glad blended malts like The Gauldrons, big peat, Scarabus, etc. I’ll be drinking more of those, and Naked Malt/Grouse and whatever else comes out at a decent daily drinker price.
Cheers for all your support my friend🥃🥃🥃🥃

Hi Mark, glad you reviewed the Springbank 15 because it's always been a kind of straggler in the distillery line up. I'll tell you up front that it doesn't rock my boat. I had one bottle a few years ago and it was sulphured. Jump forward a couple of years and give it a second chance and the same thing. Some might say that's Campbeltown 'funk' but I disagree. It might be a kind of style that Springbank are looking for. We have to remember that up until a few years ago, before the Springbank craze, you could always find this expression just as you could always find the core range 10, 12, Longrow and Hazelburn. Nothing made by this distillery today is available to casual drinkers. You have to be an obsessed whisky fanatic to get some. I've had other sulphured Springbank (Longrow 18) and no amount of oxidation sorts it out. Anyway, Springbank 15, it falls between the 10 and the 18 and I've never been keen on Springbank and and big sherry.
It's obvious you don't agree with me but that's fine. I love some diversity and I get a bit disappointed with some of the conformity in the community. I should add that despite my criticism I am a fan of Springbank and that's why I am so critical of their shortcomings. It's like a family argument. However, that was a great review with very good notes. I wouldn't be surprised if Springbank has altered the way the 15 is made and what you are drinking is different to my experiences. LOL - I'll have to give it one more chance. Cheers. WT

    • @WhiskyWhistle
      @WhiskyWhistle  2 роки тому

Hi WT! A most epic comment. It’s great for viewers getting into Springbank get a sense of all points of view. I think if people can check which batch they have at their local store and check with others they’ll reduce the chances of an underperforming batch.
Totally right, there was a time when it was readily available whereas now it takes early action to get any. I hope their production begins to approach their their limits so that a decade from now things begin to correct themselves.
As for sulphur, this one is very minimal for a worm tub malt, and I have moderate sensitivity to sulphur. Also this batch seems rather un sherried or lightly sherried or 3rd fill etc. I hope the 18 I bought is more enjoyable!! Maybe you are right about them honing their craft. I guess only time will tell!!
      Cheers my friend🥃🥃🥃🥃
