I know this is a 9 year old comment, but that's exactly what I thought whilst watching this, ray sefo's technicality in this fight is far superior than the fight he had with Mark. All whilst I was watching this I was asking myself what will win the fight, Boxing or Muay Thai? It turned out the boxing exchange ended it. It is interesting to see, because both were good technicians.
When I was younger I choosed favorites. Today when I get older I can't choose between this guys or another classic K-1 era fighters. I just enjoy the spirit of the warrior combined with great sportsmanship and athletic skills. What an era was K-1 classic GP 's....miss those days so much
SpartanfighterX10 a one in a million counter kick as he used the momentum given by andy's kick as energy to launch his own spinning kick...totally awesome
I love how back then the fighters had honour and respect for each other. None of the horrible swearing and trash talk like ke in the UFC with trash let ke Conor McGregor. Hug was a gentleman warrior with class.
People saying Sefo took a dive didn't see him get clipped twice before getting a solid right hook at the end of a 3 punch combo (the first 2 was a set up). Ray was the type of fighter to act up when he got hurt Andy Hug saw through it when he stuck his chin out after getting tagged with the arcing left hook, that's the one that did the damage. He would've instinctively gone down (like boxers taking a knee to recover) instead of staying up dazed and sustaining more damage.
yeah thats true.. but on the other hand, fighting with gloves on is absolute bullshit, and hitting the face bare handed like they did in kyokushins early days isn't that great either because often you would get a broken jaw or nose..
Nick Karatekid That's the reason why traditional schools of Karate don't have competitions and even sparring sessions. But what I was trying to say was that Andy had the bad habit of not protectiong his face - all because of Kyokushin sparring. Oyama opposed to the form of Kumite stablished by Funakoshi, and created the full-contact Karate. But, once the strikes were real, his students could not strike in the head, nor use elbow or knee strikes. In Funakoshi's old form, all kinds of strikes were allowed (depending on the condition of the floor, even grappling and takedown techniques), but you could not strike strong. For me, that's still the best way of sparring. For competitions where the victory comes by knockout, though, I don't know how could it be. The best model, I guess, is a kind of MMA - like the old Karate was - but maybe without elbow strikes or something of this sort.
for you best way of sparing is a fake sparing?shotokan practitioner will get wasted by kyokushin,or muay thai fighter under a minute, fighting is not just technique, its ability to hold pain and keep continue fighting with sharp brain ,pain drains down energy and thinking ability, also chaos in mind and stress, to handle this takes years of sparring otherwise everyone could fight, it comes only by sparring the way you going to fight,I trained In japan at jka honbu, when someone with low stance low arms attacks you with gyaku zuki, instinctively you want elbow or counter knee, but they do not know about that because they do not practice.
Andy was strong and definitely is great but Francisco Filhio was better than Andy, but he still is possibly one of the greatest fighters in kykoshin, and k-1 history
dec only idiots and ignorant people with no knowledge about what they speak of trying to pass it on as if they did know a thing or two would say otherwise. Andy has always been a kyokushin fighter, taught by the man who created it mas oyama. But the moment they open their mind to someone who is knowledgeable about a certain topic they know they just fucked up.

"Andy, hands up! Andy, hands up!..." - That's still the problem with kyokushin karate even today.
