The whole tone thing really is in the fingers. Sykes is so underrated, it is just mind boggling. He’d blow just about anybody off of the stage. He is such a great talent.
justfine77777 well...kind off true. It's about 50/50 but Sykes would sound Sykes even with a Behringer amp
If Sykes wasn’t dangerous enough with his fingers then he had to have a killer voice as well, a true dual threat.
underrated definition:
underrated. Use underrated in a sentence. adjective. The definition of underrated is something that has not received the merit,
recognition or praise it deserves. A musician that is really very good but that no one really pays attention to or praises is an
example of an underrated musician.sykes never has been,or ever will be underrated.awesomeness can not be underrated
this les paul kicks ass, black custom with a jb is my go to and sykes is god to many, many guitar players so no:he is not underrated
See, that the tone is in the fingers is absolute and utter bullshit. Leon`s preset is simply not close enough to Sykes tone. I agree that playing style and technique affects overall sound in the end, but the tone is in the equipment.
In the following link you can hear the player who is much worse than Leon, not to mention Sykes. His style is nowhere near John`s, no strong grip, no wide vibratos, relatively bad technique, but the tone is John Sykes 1/1.

Well done the sound of your solos gave the same feeling to the solos on the 1987 album. Now only if we could play like John Sykes!
My god, John!!!!! PLEASE RELEASE THIS ALBUM!!!!!!!!! This song is incredible. And the greatest guitar tone of all time is all over it. I just can’t fathom why he’s been sitting on this album for so many years. Please, release it!!!!
Great tone man. Sykes is in my top 5 all time fav players as well. Got to chat with John when they were in Minneapolis on the 'Nothin' But Trouble' tour in '94. On that album he told me he was using Mesa Dual Rectifiers. He gave me some other details about his tone that I've well forgotten by now. 24 years ago and my memory sucks anyhow.
I really like that second Blue murder album, had no idea it was a recto. Very interesting!
@@LeonTodd Yeah, the 2nd album is phenomenal. Don't know that it overtakes the 1st, as that one is a masterpiece. Not a bad track on it. Nothing But Trouble is damn close though. I usually skip past Dance & I'm On Fire from the second one. But, the rest of the track listing is amazing.
As far as the amps, I could swear I remember him saying along the lines of using two Recto's and doing some sort of weird stereo trick in the studio with it to get the tone & sound. Don't quote me though. I've tried to replay that convo in my head several times since then and can't for the life of me get everything he said nailed down. Such a good dude though. Very, very down to earth guy and was just willing to chat with a nobody for quite a while.
@@LeonTodd - I think you came amazingly close to nailing Sykes' tone. I was fortunate enough to see Sykes' band (opening for Great White) play a free outdoor gig in Long Beach, CA in '94. I was right in front of him, in the front row. He was playing his iconic ebony Les Paul Custom through 2 half-stack Mesa Boogie Rectifiers. Man, what a tone! And, his singing was also excellent. I will never forget that show, he had such an impact. Thanks for doing this video, you nailed it.
No John Sykes tone is complete without those crazy vibratos! Great tone and great playing brother. 😎👍🏻
Great sound and FWIW, John said he had the gain on both Mesas set to 4. He said he wanted more of a driven 70s tone than an 80s tone. That video is here on youtube.
I'd love to see that if you have a link
@@LeonTodd it's called "John Sykes Creating the Whitesnake 87 guitar sound". (Sorry Leon, I don't know how to make a link).
Btw, I'm sure you know this but John prob had the Mesa volume cranked up(esp since he was after an early 70s tone) so that would of course add some power tube distortion, sustain, etc. I don't know if the Axe FX simulates that so maybe you do have to add more gain(&/or compression) to match his sound. Cheers Bro!
Back in the day, I had a Peavey Backstage Plus and I ran a DOD FX55 B Supra Distortion Pedal into. I was using my Kramer Nightswan and seriously, I used to get a really really close Sykes tone. I had a Marshal Half Stack (JCM 900) and it didnt even come close to the sound I got out of that little Peavey combo. Those were the days when EVERYBODY thought I was a Rock Star. Back in the 80s, I used to drive around looking for "Killer Weed", now I drive around looking for "Weed Killer" ... SUX. I wish is was 1987 again ... Great Channel Rock On Leon Todd !!!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Leon. Have you ever listened to the Thin Lizzy LP called Thunder and Lightning that Sykes is on? THAT....is some serious shredding he does on that LP.
Great playing, and great job matching his sound.
Just downloaded this preset from Axe-Change and its great! Im a huge Sykes fan. The '87 Album is still one of my favorite albums of all time. I purchased a Gibson Custom with chrome hardware not that long ago because he's one of my favorite players!
that is so awesome man!!!
I'm really late to the party as I just got my Axe FX III just a few months ago. This is really great!!! Easily one of my favorite presets so far. Thanks, Leon
Niiice, dude. Best Sykes patch I've heard on UA-cam so far, to my ear this is suuuuper close. Got the chops to match and all. ;) Good stuff man!
Leon did a great job here, but you gotta hear Tony Fuentes Sykes patch on the Boss eBand JS-10 on UA-cam. It's out of control.
Held it together through that sneeze fit. Nice job🤟
Epic as always my friend. Can't wait to get home and try this out.
Man Leon, the shredders are gonna love u. Nice work.
If only I had that tone in 87. The gorilla amp I had sounded a little different. Sykes had so many awesome riffs. Great job.
gorilla amps LOL!!! Same
Haha! I was trying to play his stuff on Crate amp.
I had one of those gorilla amps too, along with a DOD american metal pedal to muddy things up even further.. l.o.l. :)
I LOVE that setting and sound your getting.
This sounds so authentic! Excellent
Very nice tones! Thanks for sharing brother!
Awesome! I like the delay a little tighter where it sounds like two guitars when you mandolin pick. Awesome effect but it has to be executed just right because it's unforgiving if you don't. 😁🤘
Thanks for that video.
I never looked at the date but that brings back some pretty cool memories man.
I’m 56 and I’ve been a rocker forever and now I’m metalhead but starting to stray back to blues and The Rock I listen to and I wanted to buy an axe fix 3 mk2
And I listen to your channel and a couple others, but for John’s
Sykes thing really have me thinking hard but the only thing is is my fingers used to be like a blur but after watching you I don’t know if my old fingers can still do it lol.
Thanks for that moment in time and I really appreciate it and when I do get mine and you have some extra presets for those bands, I like maybe we can connect so I don’t spend my rest of my life trying to figure out the machine lol
Thank you brother
I think I will buy the AxeFX III after Christmas. Glad to see this artist presets coming out.
savage vibrato! great playing lad! subbed.
Thanks for sharing John is one of my favorites too!!
Great sound and playing. And such a lovely precious Greco right there. Best guitar there is.
That so amaizing ,again Todd you nailed it \m/
Nice ….if you play guitar.. you love the Sykes sound.. KILLER .. nice playing on the Sykes riffs. :) Blue Murder always been my favs.
Sweet...! Thanks for the preset & Ownhammer Uber Duo review...Cheers...!
Just found this video now Leon. Great stuff!Love anything to do with JS.
Glad you enjoyed it! Sykes rules.
He's in my top 3 favorites. I can't hear enough of his playing .
Nailed it. Definitely had a scooped eq. That singing bass pickup and delay with ting of chorus is spot on. Mesas were always so thick . Please do a brad Gillis speak of the devil tone !! Great job
Leon, your patch sounds fantastic! Great playing too!!
Much appreciated mate :)
Wow, great work! I have an FX8 Mk.II, I need to figure out how to get the effects part of your preset out and into my FX8. Sykes is one of my all-time favorites too! Also, sub'd! :)
Thanks bro, fantastic tone!
Great picking, very clean 👍🏻
Wow, thanks for all your vids about the axe Fx 3, get mine next week!!!
Please keep up the content!
A vid about Andy James‘s tone would be amazing, yes there are sound of Stl to buy but for me its more a understanding thing to look your vids, not just only copy&paste.
Greets
Yes Sykes is insanely talented. Thanks for the breakdown Leon
No doubt!
Really cool! I love John Sykes since whitesnake '87 too. I might get the AXEFX 3 at some point. I'm using BIASFX right now I think it sounds pretty good for recording.
John is an absolute legend. The III is next level man, feels so good!
Great tone indeed.JS is such a soulful player...
Incredible sound Leon!! Great playing as well!! The Axe FX III sounds so "Multi Dimensional" to me. if that makes any sense . . It just has a kind of 3D layer to the sound that just sits in the background. I can't explain it but I do hear something as a "sub layer" of sound.
Thanks so much Glenn; I agree that it's hard to put into words, but 3D and airy seem like the best ways to describe it.
Damn that sounds good !! great playing too
Cheers!
Man, you're playing is top notch!
Sounds great!
Was listening to Blue Murder and this came up. Love it. !!!!
I used to have a dirty fingers pickup in a Gibson " the paul" which is an all walnut body and mahogany neck. The 500 t I think it is called is a killer high output Gibson pickup. I played with a friend and we were figuring out a song on his amp and he had to grab his guitar with EMGs in it to have enough gain to keep up with my Gibson Les Paul Studio lite which had a schaller floyd and chambered body and 500 t pickups.
John's Vibrato is epic.
Take care my friend.
My mate has one of those LP's and it sounds HUGE
Sounds great. Big hairy profiles has done some great ones for Kemper too.
One cool test I'd like to see as a comparison from you one day is 1) shooting direct profile of amp (without cab) 2) using axe fx amp model of similar amp model 3) using the same IR (post Kemper and axe, not within these devices-- Kemper tends to change how IR sounds) and then compare :)))
Of course you can also employ tone matching for this and maybe full studio profile vs the full axe + Shooting IR with axe + EQ matching tone.
it sounds better than outstanding! and the skills man...without them it would sound nothing like this! :D
Yes -- My Axe FX hasn't been delivered yet, but I downloaded this patch and will be using it a lot!
WS 1987 is probably how Thin Lizzy would of ended up sounding ,if they hadnt split and PL dying .They were half way they ,they were getting that heavy
you nailed it
Absolutely got the lead down! 👏👏👏👏
That was fucking awesome man...new fan here Leon!
Thanks for watching mate
Great video thanks
The fractal stuff is unreal
That takes me back
Thanks for the vid! For your channel! Great sound! Here's a new Sub! 🤘
Holy. Smokes. Love that rhythm tone! Wish I could get that kind of depth from my superstrat....or suddenly convert to a lover of Les Paul. Who am I kidding? All the tone in the world won't give the chops to sound like Sykes.
I watch this video over and over again-Love you’re playing! How did you learn to alternate pick like that?
I love it Thanks so much.
Nice Job!!
Awesome!!
It sounds brilliant fella, his sound and playing on the last lizzy album is dawgz bawz too, nice playing .. nay bad👍
Now I HAVE to create this tone in my pod hd500 live 😁
The ownhammer cab makes de difference!
Probably the overall best guitar album in existence
Holy shit that’s spot on
Very nice! Now I need to crank up some old Whitesnake. lol
Watching you on my TV. Saw Blue Murder. It was killer. It was at an outdoor venue. It had just opened. Killer show . Saw BM with bullet boys and Cinderella. Great concert. 👍💝👍
Jealous!
@@LeonTodd It was great sir. I'm so glad to see young men like you keeping the very cool 80s guitar alive. 👍💝👍
@@LeonTodd I am also a huge John Sykes fan. Do you like his pkaying on the Thin Lizzy stuff? Man he kills it on the song " still in love with you " with both guitar and vocals..Check it out on here if you've not allready ..Killer stuff. Blues based of course.
Nailed it
This is an AWESOME tone and your playing is fantastic!. Can you show how to get a tone like this on the Helix, if it's possible? Pretty please?
I love these tones and your playing really demonstrates them well. do you have any Helix patches like this?
Ohh 😱 tight, very good, muito bom
@Leon Todd All the clean parts were a Roland Jazz Chorus JC 120 Amp and a 1961 or 1962 Fender Strat
Huge influence 4 me...🎉
awesome tone my friend!!hey Leon what ir are you using for the ownhammer uber pack?
Leon, you freakin’ SMOKE, man!! You also have great taste in guitar players. Sykes is one of the best! I wish he would put something out for crying in the rain! Minus the cover songs, of course. After nearly twenty years without new material, I would hope John has enough original songs not to resort to covering Bob Marley. What is he thinking with that? I want Sykes songs, not covers! Who’s with me on that?
Yeah I'd love to hear some more original stuff from JS
Awesome as always...
Can you upload the George Lynch preset to axechange? I just uploaded the Sykes and it sounds great but when I must be missing something or user error in the Lynch. Lynch is by far my fav and really want to get that preset to sound like your video, thx
Awesome.
Hi
Congratulations for your sessions
I often watch your videos but never seen this Greco.
I’ve just bought one like yours and happy with it : what model is yours please.
Niiiicssss!
Your a Badass. Im subscribing
Sykes is my #2 influence right behind Ed. Would love to hear you demo the ISP Theta Pro Michael Sweet pedal Leon.
Close to Johns sound, great to see someone who has chops & feel. I've never seen your channel before, you do know John Sykes's chops he gives credit to Gary Moore for being his biggest influence ? Most of his speed runs & quick pentatonic scales are all Gary Moore, not blues Gary Moore but in his hard rock days which John Happily has always admitted to same goes for Vivian Cambell. I've subscribed & will tell fellow musos about your channel. Your a good guitarist man.
Hi Leon , do you recomend this greco les paul over a standard gibson?
Nice impulses! I've recently started using the Two Notes cabs -which are fantastic by the way- and I've lost track of what Ownhammer is up to. John Sykes recently played in a Gary Moore Tribute album, he played on "Still Got the Blues", check it out! ;-)
I love that Sykes SGTB version! he's insane hey.
I used to have a Gibson " the paul " made if walnut which had that Dirty fingers pickup. God that's a hot pickup. So is the 500t I think it's called. Had one in a LP studio lite. Great guitar
A buddy of mine has one of those. Interesting guitar.
@@LeonTodd Yes it is. It isn't known much, but walnut is uaed by gun manufacturers for stocks on rifles and ahotguns and hence why not available much for guitar making. ( I worked in the firearms business here in the 80s and 90s .
That LP " The Paul" was a great stripped down guitar. They also made it in mahogany. Basucally they were studios but a little different. I'm looking into a PRS S2 custom 22 or 24. My brother has a PRS to die for. It's an 89 or 90 Ten top with a beautiful just gorgeous maple top. It plays like butter and is all original.
Leon is hanging out in the Valley of the Kings. Great tone and nice job!
The Blue Murder stuff was a bit more open sounding. Not sure what he used for that
Yeah.. totally agree. He even nailed that tone in old 80s live videos with cheap cameras. Ha. Not sure how.. but Sykes was/is one of the greatest guitar/vox combo's ever.. beyond reason with both of those abilities. He's been teasing with a new album the last couple years. Hopefully soon! The latest is December, 2018.
He's the whole package isn't he?
Nice Greco. I regret selling mine and am looking for another lefty.
Is it possible to achieve a somewhat close tone using a Mesa MK lV instead of a MK lll ?
Hey Leon, the Lynch worked great, do you have an AX8 version for your John Sykes patch?
I'm pretty sure it was a MKIII coliseum (blue strip) John used on the '87 album. But let's face it...any of those old MK Boogies will get you there. Killer...killer tones!
I thunk you're right. An old C+ or Mark III is one of my dream amps.
Yep! I remember seeing Blue Murder open for King's X back in '89. John was still raging the MKIII through Marshall cabs.
That was one helluva badass show!
Two of my favourite bands ever right there. must have been an incredible show!
His vibrato is amazing
Love Sykes.Blue Murder!!!
Lizzy's Thunder and Lightning album was incredible also. " Like thunder and lightning
God damn, it's so exciting
It hits you like a hammer
God damn ! " 🤘
Sounds awesome. Sorry if you've covered this already, but what power amp are you using with Ax III? Or are you going direct into powered speakers? Thanks
This is all direct but I use a matrix gt800fx if I ever want to use a cab
Nice. Thought you might of started off with Still of the Night? Ending with it was ok though 👍
Sorry for you that Sykes got the gig before you. Good video!
He did a pretty job with it :p
Kind of?? Spot on!!!
@leontodd got to check out the new Whitesnake White rock album remix! All Sykes time with the natural rooms but no secondary hall verb! Much cleaner and it’s fucking glorious.
I don't know, sounds a little overly saturated, slightly dirtier, not as clear. You sound great and inspired me to buy the AXE-FX III. Keep up the great work!
It’s thanks to your videos Leon that I’ve taken more of an interest into John Sykes and his playing. How would you go about recreating his 1987/Blue Murder tone with a Marshall voiced amp? I don’t own a Mark 3 coliseum and I’ve got an EL34 Marshall voiced amp. Cheers from Chicago.
A GEQ in the loop might help a little!
@@LeonTodd I’ve got a Boss GE7. I tried it out with a slight V on the settings and it got within the ballpark. I don’t I’ve seen you ever demo a Silver Jubilee. What do you think of those amps?
Have you done a comparison with axe VS that beautiful Soldano?
