The best with a spanner in their bare hands. Trained to ignore pain, ignore the weather. Eat things in the site canteen that would make a Billy goat puke. 😉💪😁
Very informative! I'm just getting sick and tired of this rain. Ever since April we just haven't managed to fully escape it, I know we're in the UK but i'm just patiently waiting for a drier and warmer spell of weather lasting longer than a few days.
Very many thanks indeed Annie. Well, you’ve given us a brief look into roughly the next week of June which is extremely helpful for hubby and I, especially as we usually have a week’s holiday in May. So, I really do thank you for that. Thanks to you, and to the Met for their hard week. Take great care care everyone 😊
I always find in the south west that if its cloudy all day suddenly at 6pm onwards suddenly all the clouds just bugger off and no wind at all, its so infuriating 😅 we need the night time and day time weather to switch.
Sunny start to summer ? British weather is a bit of a joke considering that come the 21st June it'll be the Summer Solstice and then it'll be all down hill towards the Winter Solstice.!!
Statistics for model verification have been published for years and the UKMO’s UKV has always been rock solid for the British Isles (hardly surprising given enhanced local data)
Normaly June ( last month of spring) is usually very decent . But I've noticed after the 21st of June we hit autumn pretty early and then get an Indian summer back end of August to September.
Thank you,Annie.Really informative & enjoyable,as always.Perhaps a dispelling of media reports could be featured.Rightly or wrongly I always thought that the accuracy of predictions waned after about 5 to 10 days.Where these other outlets are so factual in their predictions is beyond me!Anything for an average summer which keeps the pollen levels down ,I would happy!!!
Another excellent Deep Dive, thank you. Does the Met office follow up with those media outlets who frequently misquote you and produce idiotic weather headlines? In particular I’m thinking of the Express, Mail and GBNews.
Lots of chatter about La Niña likely to happen this summer and the ocean temperatures already being abnormally warm bringing a potential for a high hurricane season. Whilst not factoring in hurricanes as a threat to the UK, Is it likely to impact our summer weather this year and if so does an La Niña bring a greater chance of wet or dry weather and has this formed part of any seasonal prediction?
Last week's deep dive showed we were on track for the warmest May on record - even if temperatures were just average to the end of the month so I was hoping to see some follow up on this. May had been until last week a rare drier than average month and in view of the quite exceptional rainfall amounts last week I would like to see how the figures have moved. Edinburgh had freakish amounts of rain across three or four days. I think Cumbria eneded up the wettest and not North Wales and Cheshire as per the amber warning.
Surely the averages have changed a lot in the past two decades is that something that needs to be addressed? seasonal temps, rainfall amounts ETC cheers.
Hi Met Office. I know you read the comments so could you answer this question. This May hasn't been that extraordinary, lots of rain, some sun but no heatwaves...so how the heck could it be the warmest May on record? Can you do a Deep Dive into why? Is it warmer land mass? warmer seas?
Warmest in the WORLD not the UK. India had temps of 53celcius with 90+ humidity last week. Look at the Philippines too where the el nino is going on. They've been 40/50+ degrees or look at south america temperatures.
Is there any periodicity/cyclicity to the frequency of slow meandering phases and faster more powerful jet streams? What "forces" them - NAO? ENSO far-field effects? Other effects?
Ta very much. I could follow what you said about the complexities that are our weather patterns quite easily. You had the forecast for yesterday spot on (today's Wednesday). Why the r/w press go out of their way to print inaccuracy is a mystery.
I hope not.We git flooded our here in Hull in 2007 and had to be saved by boat from our home,we lost a lot of furnishings and clothes in the 2007 floods and had to get into debt to replace it all as the insurance didn't pay out nearly enough to replace what we lost. My dad lost his brand new car as well
ESA's EarthCARE mission is launching into orbit tonight. Could we have an overview of how the new measurements of cloud and aerosol profiles from space can benefit the numerical weather prediction models?
I've noticed many models are taking the high further north west, which tends to bring us cool and wet weather at this time of year. This sort of pattern also tends to last for awhile in summer, as was the case last year, when it started in July and didn't break, until September. Is it likely it will do a similar thing this year?
It's likely to be hotter? I'm in the southeast and it's been cold and wet for the last two weeks.. I've never known it to be this cold for such a long period in May. Maybe when those sunspots come back around it'll warm things up a bit🤞
Much more balanced than the sensationalist media articles. Annie clearly understands the maths behind forecasting and presented this in a way that is very easy to understand.
What are the "regimes" you use on the forecasts - here there is "Regime 13 of 30" and "Regime 4 of 30" - is there somewhere to find out more about these?
A weather regime (or weather pattern) can be described as one of many circulation types over a defined region, which differs in its characteristics from other weather regimes over the same region and varies on a daily basis. The weather regimes are defined in terms of their Mean Sea Level Pressure (MSLP) anomalies. Mapped regime definitions remain static throughout the year, which leads to some interesting seasonality in their occurrence. Who ever wrote the broad statement about 50 days of rain for the summer. They must beleive in the old wives tales. If it rains on St Switthens Day it will rain for 40 days and 40 nights" Welll what ever rain or shine we can't change it.
Thanks Annie. Not anything spectacular in the forecast. This long term trend of wetness is deeply concerning tbh. A few years ago though we went for a prolonged period without significant rainfall. Which is more likely with climate change and does this depend upon our position with the jet stream?
A warming planet is one that retains more energy within its atmosphere. That energy enhances the intensity of weather systems. The location will always track relative to the jet stream.
Why are the tabloids allowed to get away with all the false scaremongering about weather. It’s constant from certain tabloids. Surely this shouldn’t be allowed?
