Rachmaninoff’s huge hands! This amazing composer (rachmaninoff) had some big hands! And so wanted to give you a bit of a “Fun Fact” :) Please consider subscribing
Thanks! Here's one for you in return. Josef Hoffman had very small hands and so Steinway built him a custom grand piano with narrower keys. When he received it him and his friends decided to play a prank on Rachmaninoff and invited him to Hoffman's house to see and play his new piano! Rachmaninoff sat down to play and after fumbling and falling over his own fingers for a while, he apologised for "not being able to play today" and he couldn't understand what was wrong! Hoffman and friends eventually let go of the laughter they were holding in and let Sergey in on the joke!
My hand span goes to F, but I remember when playing heroic polonaise there was this stupid chord "FCFA in the left hand, I could not play it properly with one hand because the fingers inbetween limited my range so I cheated it by carrying the second finger over
Rachmaninoff could reach from C to A as a 13th, but definitely just barely, and when I mean barely I mean it would probably take him 5 seconds just to set up his hand to hold the notes. Liszt had a similar handspan. In the piano world, if you have a hand span of 8.5 inches or over then your span is on the large end of the spectrum (I have, at the time of writing, an 8.75 inch span). You need a minimum of 8 inches of span to reach white key tenths and use them at all, 8 and a quarter to be able to use them a bit more efficiently and use minor tenths with the flat on top. You need to be able to reach an eleventh (8.75 inches of span like myself) to be able to fairly efficiently play all minor tenths at medium tempos. 9 inches and over is what I consider to be a massive hand span, at that point you can pretty much reach all the tenths you could want fairly efficiently though 9 and a half inch span is where it's at, once you can reach a 12th you're set, no need for more span.
Darn, y’know funny fact: my brother has bigger hands, hence he can reach a 11th- but he doesn’t even play piano (or any instrument)! I am kinda jealous of him but I’m happy with my “span”.
I would be jelous too. there are for sure many people who have fantastisc bodily possibilities who do nothing because they are not intressted in music at all...what a waste
@@Lisztener No problem dude, you where only one scale degree off. But i still know one scale degree is a lot when we are talking about hand size. One thing is sure he had BIG **** hands!
My span is from c to c. I have really really small hands wich made me to skippa playing some notes/ do arrpegios/ to change fingerings. It is pretty annoying. It will be so much easier to only read notes and play a piece instead.. people should think about genetic when they do their children to play a piano. If both parents have small hands it is possible that the kiddo also will have small hands and maybe a harp or violin will be a better choice?

How to play Rachmanioff with small hands: dont.
Just give up. Haha no I’m joking!
@@pianobreaker Big brain
@@pianobreaker one small issue those are sooo hard to find and yes there is 6.0 piano keys but avreage piano is 6.5
Ikk what to do
So apparently on the right he could do something really freakish: CEGC with the 4 fingers, and then E above that WITH THE THUMB CROSSING UNDERNEATH.
o-o wow
This is really good man you are one of my fav UA-camrs

@@Lisztener my father has big hands but I just have long fingers, each finger is at least the length of my palm or longer

@@Lisztener So i can reach an 10th (from c to e), and so my dad lmao
P.S thats when they say: like father like son
@@FranzLiszt0904 cool!
Wow that’s huge
Yes indeed o-o
Wow! He was crazy. Liszt was similar, except Liszt could hit a 13th (C-A) 😐 Both men were freaks of nature.
Liszt and Rachmaninoff were incredible!
Rach could too, they had the same hand span

I am so happy that I can reach the 10th note
Very good.
When you lack reach, roll the chords.
Yeah that is pretty much the only solution I could think of.
@@Lisztener It's what every concert pianist does when they don't have enough span.
@@ayokay123 Yeah i know lol i do it too sometimes- the thing is I don’t have big hands but I have stretchy fingers so it comes in handy too :P
@@Lisztener Best I can do is 10ths, but only on the very edge of the keys and not with much confidence.
Ah I see, that’s not bad :) some people can barely hit octaves.

i can barely play a tenth i have to do a full stretch and be on the outer side of the keys
