So clearly we must wear sunglasses at all times 🤦🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤭
As a person who was born and raised in Cartagena I could add two more tourist alerts: 1) always ask for the price of the things you're buying before accepting them, usually the cost of souvenirs, food, jewelry, pictures with palanqueras, etc. Changes by your accent, so please always ask for it in advance. 2) always be aware of your belongings, Cartagena is beautiful and yet, it's one of the cities that has the highest number of poverty in Colombia, therefore robbers are always attentive to any opportunities they may have, they usually don't mess with tourists, but still, just be attentive. I hope it helps!
@ok 01 tourism is their number one income, always be aware and someone is always waiting for your guard to go down. And dont think for a minute there arent more sophisticated scams these are usually more costly.
Same rules for Dominican Republic, same scams also. And in DR they usually not messing with Tourists because they get problem with cops, just because DR lives from tourists. But if you do get in problems, cops will also want some money to help you.
Thank you so much for your advice. I am planning on visiting (hopefully in July). I'm an American. Hope to have a good stay.
Thank you. Gracias
@@PLOCA82 go to Medellin instead. You're welcome
The rappers are equivalent to the CD guys on NYC
They are!
They rapped the same song everyday I was there
They have been in every Cartagena video I've watched!!..smh😀 Thanks for the tips
@@rubylimey7614 the rappers are the worst
I tell the CD guys that I don't have a CD player. Many people these days don't have one.
The Palenque ladies deserve that money. Tourist will just snap pictures of them as if they are tourist attractions and not people on their jobs. That part saying "they're not from here." Now that was strange like they don't belong. They are Colombians that commute to work like many do. As for the street rappers, the ones I briefly encounter were pretty nice guys. I called them over and they were entertaining.
I'm Colombian and everything stated in this video is true lol. Idk why in Cartagena "no" means yes lol
They are bored people and trying to make a few dollars.
@@ro33west I agree
Just returned from Colombia and all of these are 100% spot on from my time in Cartagena.
So what I've gathered was : Don't make eye contact and wear headphones and pretend to listen music 👍🏽(but also be aware of your surroundings)

Hi Sarah! Congrats from Vitória, the capital citty of Espírito Santo, a state spotted in the Southeast Region of Brazil. I like to see your passion in the vídeos you upload. Because of that I just subscribed to your channel. Keep up doing your amazing job. This is my First comment, so forgive my enthusiasm, I promise not make such a large text like this one from now on. I wish you luck and, as people say in Brazil when we leave of our friends, "um abraço". God bless you!, you"re one in a million!
Great video Sarah! Reminds me of the carnival cruise me and my wife took to the Dominican Republic. We took a tour provided by Outback Adventures that was great BUT one part of the tour was some time at a "hidden beach" well the whole time we where at the beach there was there guys with suitcases full of expensive trinkets. They actually stood in knee high water following everyone around. And when you came back to shore they followed and hounded us while we changed. My inner New Yorker took over and we totally ignored them. What's the best is i saw a car there that I can swore I saw at some other stops during the tour so they were following our open air tour bus!
Yikes that is so intense that they followed people into the water!
I'm going to Colombia last minute to Medellin and Cartagena so these videos are a lifesaver!
Thank you! I hope you subscribed 😀
Hola sarita saludos muy buen video sobre scams bye always you #1
This is so true! I just came back. I met almost everyone you mentioned in that city. The rappers are super annoying lol
Cool travel video
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Great video, very clearly spoken, and gives a clear understanding of the ongoing persistent harassment tourists are forced to endure from the street hawkers. Makes me really think twice about going, but i have a Columbian friend i might hang out with her and I am sure it will make a difference.
Wow, this video needs more views! I'm from Colombia and everything you are saying is 100% accurate lol there's tourist traps everywhere at the beach. They overcharge tourists a lot too. For all of the people visiting Cartagena, make sure you don't buy drinks at the beach, or at least be careful because sometimes street vendors charge 5 times of what the product really cost, especially beer!
Thumbs up as usual
useful video!
Glad to hear that!
Video is on point, I would add avoid the local beaches in Bocagrande. They will approach you ever 30 seconds. A beautiful city but they harras you soooo much it is insane
100% agree. I stayed in Boca Grande for a week and got harassed relentlessly every time I left the hotel.. it’s exhausting! I went to the beach twice and realized quickly that it wasn’t a place you could relax as a tourist. So my wife and I started going early in the morning before the vendors got there. That’s the only way you could enjoy those beaches
Wow, beautiful city! I must go soon!
Yes you should !
@@SarahFunky , I definitely will go. My parents are from Medellin and I've been to Colombia before but I've never been to Cartagena which is very touristy.
@@acortes7771 Medellin is awesome!
@@SarahFunky I love it. It changed so much from the last time I was there over 15yrs ago. My favorite place is up in El Penol (La Represa). Pereira has also changed a lot, I have many relatives there as well. I recommend Pereira if you haven't been there yet.
Great information. If there is not a "safe" spot at the port, I will just stay on the ship. not worth the hassle.
Thanks!)
Everything she spoke on is 100% true. Also, for the beach if the massage people come don’t let them touch you. You have to keep telling them no because they will continue and then demand payment. I am in Bocagrande/Cartagena now right on the beach. The people are annoying and they like to stand all in your space. Just ignore them.
I live in the NYC and the same thing happens in Times Square. lol I've been to Cartagena, it's beautiful though.
damsel In a dress- I lived in NYC all my life, Colombian American and been to Cartegena. It’s seem like the people selling stuffs on streets in Cartegena are more relentless in getting money from tourist than NYC. Nothing wrong with asking, but when it get relentless then there’s a problem
thank you 💓
You're welcome 😊
I love you smile and your attitude.... I was having a bad day but saw your NYC video and just made me smile 😊 keep up the good work
THANK YOU
Hey.. Great video.. Quick question.. How do u get so clear sound on such a windy day.. Please i need to know
Super film!
are there any traps to be aware of arriving at the airport? the best way to get from the airport to my airbnb?
I am going next weekend !! I will see if it’s worst than Egypt
The video is correct, I visited Cartagena and was my first and last time there, really overwhelmed by people😥
lol! i am going for the first time next month and i am sure i will not be overwhelemed by the people! lol
@@JOESUBA122 Good luck then!
@@JOESUBA122 were u? 🙂
Many of my brothers will not bother tourists. But if you can buy them some fruit to eat.
She has such a nice ass at 4:00
I sooo thank you for this info. I plan to visit cartagena this year. That's how they are in the DR as well🤣
I’m from
Cartagena and even as a native person I was also trapped in these scams: the palenqueras, which are not like that that bad 🙄 but still, and the massagers. That was the worst. They were charging me and my husband more money than I would have paid for a professional massage in a spa. I had to call the police for them to go away. Be aware people! And don’t let the scammers ruin such a beautiful city to stay in.
Some woman in Barú scammed me out of $60,000 pesos for a "free" massage today. As much as I don't like to be rude to people, there's times when you absolutely have to be a dick to watch out for yourself.
@@jackhole4274 aww, I'm sorry to hear that. Ready to bring my NY side to them (not all lol)
I apply your expression “no dar papaya” with a very broad brush. It covers so much. 😂
They already have ruined it. The vendors are beyond relentless. I live in Medellin and no expats wanna go to Cartagena anymore
I was there last March everything is true but amazing city gone many times and will keep going. Good video👌🏿👌🏿
I'm looking at going bro. From miami, I'm doing mad research. Glad to see another brother went
@@dyblifestyle I just got to Medelllin today and next week will hit up Cartagena
@@OnTheGoWithNgongo for real . I might have to ride asap. These youtube videos make it seem unsafe for us
@@dyblifestyle Yes please do I'm in Medellin and flying out tomorrow to Cartagena.
@@OnTheGoWithNgongo what's your ig bro
yeah those damn beach massage people got me too..lol
Those massage ladies sound JUST like this lady who harassed me into getting “free” henna in Marrakesh
Don’t say no, just nod your head no and keep a blank stare
The rappers haha.. Our first meal we're sitting down eating & about 3 roll up to our table outside. It was something else. We didn't give in to them then or the many times they approached us on the street but on our last night I gave one $7 USD. He was so grateful.
This is so true! I know them people just try to make a living but they can get really annoying, and I hate that cause it makes the experience a little stressing especially when you let them know you don’t want whatever service they’re offering you, the oyster guy is very famous, he once charged us like way more pesos so my mom wouldn’t pay him that and he wouldn’t go away , she didn’t have enough cash so she went and got cash from the cocoa guy and he told her she can call the police if he gets really persistent.
Yikes, the same thing happened to us!
I went to cartagena in the beginning of 2020, and i didnt like the city at all. The rest of colombia is amazing but this city didnt suit my expectations and that is mainly because of all the vendor, rappers and whatever who were so annoying
I want some that asap funky
Just avoid any city where the majority of their economy relies on tourism lmao. Go to neighboring cities instead!
We have stuff like this in Miami
I’ve been there past year and all of what she said is 100% accurate.
I hated Cartagena because of the locals trying to scam me after every breath I took.
It has some good private beaches though, without the vendors/scammers, but they’re much more expensive. There are much better places to be in Colombia and South America in general.
A good video about Cartagena. In terms of people insisting on you giving them money if you get trapped like this remember what people earn in Colombia. The minimum wage which more than 50% earn, or earn less than, is about $250. So that (Many Colombians work 6 day weeks) is $10 a day. Thats just over $1 an hour (COP 4,000). So if someone spends 10 minutes doing something and then demands payment do not pay a lot. The city authorities are getting embarrassed by these scams so threats to get payment will go nowhere.
It doesn't matter. A scam is a scam and harassment is harrassment. The rest of Colombia is not like this. Cartagena attracts these types that prey on tourists. Locals refer to them as ratons and cucarachas
@@paulg6274 where do I say it is not a scam. My point is that if people feel like giving money remember the value of it in Colombia. Give a young man $20 for singing a five minute rap, song and you have just paid him what a real worker gets in two days. Tourists, particularly Americans pay way too much. I have seen tourists paying professional photographers $900 for a mornings work for some photos for their facebook accounts. Thats more than what a junior doctor earns in a month in Colombia and a multiple of what a local would pay. And as I say if they get pushy about being paid the local authorities have little time for this nonsense these days. And why does this happen in Cartagena? Because it is the only city in Colombia where two nights accommodation at one of the boutique hotels is about what a Colombian makes in 6 months. One tourist can give a woman with fruit on their head more than a teacher makes in a day.
Yeah. You have to firmly say nottttt to all vendors
Lmaoooo I wish I watched this video before going . Because all this is accurate.
well, if you like Cartanagena i think you going to like San Andres Island. No problem over there people speak english and spanish equaly
When are you coming back
I was there last 2 weeks ago in the walled city. We stayed at Caseno Del Porvenir. Beautiful hotel. Anyways the scams you discuss really ruins the experience. I’ll go somewhere else
Also taxis, some will ask how much you have when you ask how much it costs, they will make you pay so much, so just give them 8 mil to 10 mil
What is a customary tip???
don't you have a facebook link?
Casada con un latino , and still don't get it !!!
Love the vídeos !
Going there in two weeks and I think I gonna be fine I’m from Havana 😅
she's 100% right on. lol nothing is for free in Cartagena
amei
This video comes too late to me hahahaha i've been in cartagena in january and the massage ladies took my foot when i was chillin on the beach and never let go, later they demand payment but they dont tell you how much its gonna cost you before their service, they just do it the rough way... its a beatiful place but way too many street vendors everywere you look
For a next occasion you can say to them: sorry no money, or you can also say please déjame solo por favor, ahora no por favor
The guys that sell bracelets and cigars also pick pocket u I had a small amount of money taken and I was being very on point. Don't let them within 2-3 ft of u or just say 6 ft for covid. Get small bills and if they say it's something there selling costs 20 mil say 10 mil or nothing
Extremely cute in this video, Sarah
Thank you!
Sarah Funk you’re welcome!
@@SarahFunky super hot in this video. i'm a fan !
@4:01, 😍
Best thing wifey told me to do was just WALK and say no gracias but politely multiple times
I’m here now and everything this woman said is the truth.
I absolutely love Cartagena and I will also add the fake Cuban Cigars. My Local friends warned me they are not real. Just be careful and have a fantastic time!
Man Cartagena is a really gorgeous city but the constant harassment to buy something is exhausting and almost ruined my entire trip.. going to the beach is absolutely horrible as the vendors are relentless. They approach you the minute you step foot on the sand and will follow you despite you saying “No”. They will continue to approach you through your entire stay. They make it impossible to just relax
What is every other Latin American city
Good advice. The Kiwis would love to adopt you as their new, 'good-twin', replacement prime minister. Work on your accent and no one will even notice!
OH MY GOD!!! I was just there and they are so God damn annoying. I don't think no' is in the Colombian dictionary SMH. The beach is worst!!! I know they have to make a living but it really takes away from your Vacation experience. They think every foreigner is rich and will just follow you around. I did get to visit the African city of Palenque and will be doing some charity work there with soccer. I have about 80 videos to post soon LOl-
AAHHH my born city... Yeah those people can be very annoying. That's why when I go to those areas i go with family member who are locals and they serve as my body guards lol. You are so right about those massage lady.. They got my wife at the time. They claim its just free but then charge you. Next time just tell them you already had one yesterday. But awesome video. Im glad you like Cartagena. I dont know if you visited the islands. But they're amazing.
I am not a nurd and no one make me do something i don't want
Can the authorities do something about this? One thing is for someone to try to make a living, but people harassing everyone? I can’t imagine someone would want to go back…😕
