    Andrew Huberman is an American neuroscientist and neurobiologist at Stanford University. He is well known for his morning routine and productivity tips, so I decided to try Andrew Huberman's morning routine to see if I felt a difference in my productivity. As someone who has my own 5am morning routine, I wanted to try a NEW 5am morning routine :)

    Dopamine doesn't rise when we do something nice , it rises in anticipation of doing something nice. The dopamine comes before the cake :)
    However, Dopamine rises post cold shower, because the cold triggers sympatic nervous system (bc your body think youre in danger), which increases noradrenalin production which again increases dopamine production.
    I go winter swimming in a public pool with a sauna, and there are definitely some regulars who seem very addicted to that adrenalin and dopamine rush!

    • @mayaleex3
      @mayaleex3  4 місяці тому +16

      That makes sense!! As of now I still don’t anticipate the cold showering ever feeling nice 🥺 but I do like how I feel after! Maybe the more I do it I’ll become like the winter swimmers 🥶

    • @makennazornes
      @makennazornes 4 місяці тому +4

      @@mayaleex3 Andrew Huberman actually talks about that you don’t want the shower to feel good because if it feels good you don’t get the same rush afterwards. 🤷‍♀️ Apparently it’s the fact that it’s so unpleasant that makes it so much more effective.

    • @skylenco5709
      @skylenco5709 2 місяці тому

      i thought dopamine acts as a motivator aswell as pleasure (which would mean it does get released when we do something nice) like thats why its addictive because your brain yearns for that feelings of pleasure when dopamine is released (like gambling) this is a genuine question as im studying psychology at the moment

    • @Miliregretz
      @Miliregretz 2 місяці тому

      @@skylenco5709 dopamine is not involved directly in making us feel pleasure, meaning, we would still be able to enjoy a cake even if we weren't able to produce dopamine. When we anticipate cake (or another pleasure/addiction), dopamine is produced, and that motivates us to pursue the cake (and keep us hooked on drugs, gambling, sex, etc).
      So in the case of a gambling addict, even though they lose most games, their body knows it's possible and feels amazing to win, so when they have an opportunity to gamble, dopamine is released and motivates them to pursue the win.
      I hope this makes sense! (I'm a nurse, so I know the basics, but am in no way an expert or qualified to teach this)

    • @Miliregretz
      @Miliregretz 2 місяці тому

      @@skylenco5709 I think scientists used to believe that, but newer research shows that if we couldn't produce dopamine, we would still be able to feel pleasure, but wouldn't be motivated to pursue it. So dopamine is linked to addiction, because it is the driver of addictive behaviour. Someone with a gambling addiction will get a dopamine rush at the opportunity of a gamble bc of the opportunity of winning and feeling pleasure, even if they lose. So they go back for the anticipation, rather than the pleasure. Hope that makes sense!

    My personal opinions:
    - As someone who has tried waking up at 5, the best thing is ultimately to wake up at a time which makes sense for you and your schedule. I didn't like waking up at 5 while I was at college because I found that was _too much_ morning time and not enough evening time. 6am worked best for me. Waking up as early as possible for no reason isn't helpful, nor is it necessarily possible. That being said though, as I've been trying to incorporate some extra things into my own morning routine, I think I will be going back to trying 5:30am because a bigger morning routine needs more time.
    - Might try the salt water thing? Kinda makes sense.
    - Americans, darlings, normal water is the best thing for you, not all this consumerist juice stuff.
    - I can barely focus as it is! Definitely not on an empty stomach!

    A note on intermittent fasting…people love to talk about how healthy it is, but the tests have really only been done on men. Women’s bodies work differently, and it’s not a healthy practice for women to engage in. Also…the reason that you might feel so alert in the morning doing intermittent fasting is because the lack of food (especially if you couple the empty stomach with a cup of coffee as many people do) triggers your stress hormones. So it’s similar to how in really stressful situations (like a mother lifting a car off her child, for instance) you might get a jolt of clarity that helps you think better, makes you stronger, etc. But in the long term putting that much stress on your body is not good.

    So I’m a big fan of cold showers in the morning! Especially when I go outside for a run and get home sweaty and hot. But what I do is 1. A few drops of peppermint oil in the bottom of the shower 2. I hop in when it’s cold for 1 minute 3. I switch it to hot and enjoy a steamy pepperminty warm shower . But I still feel like I get the health benefits and energy of that cold shower.

      Being 'productive' looks different to everyone. Think about HOW you want to be productive. As a student, your schedule changes semester to semester, so your routine will have to shift as your class times shift. Do you also work? Do you need more, less or average study time? Once you sketch out your current semester class times, you can then make an outline schedule. Don't worry abut how OTHER people do things - do what works for you.

    hi! longtime viewer and longtime cold shower taker haha! i just wanted to pop in and say my two cents! 1) i find the cold showers are SO MUCH EASIER if you do them right after a workout. so you're all warm and sweaty and the cold shower is (a little) less painful. 2) i think the dopamine rise is from the delayed gratification! for instance, going on social media boosts my dopamine but a get a bigger and longer boost from completing a hard task. it doesn't make me WANT to complete more hard tasks (i am a BIG TIME procrastinator) but i can feel that the dopamine release from completing a difficult thing is bigger than a short term thing. no idea if this is 100% science backed but maybe it helps you! love your videos and always happy to see you grow!!!

    I've took cold showers for 8 months or so, before winter came :')
    Planning on starting again once it gets warmer.
    The thing about dopamine: it doesn't rise because the shower feels nice, it rises because the body enters the fight or flight mode, cuz it thinks you are in danger and releases noradrenaline (huberman talks about that bit i think), and you don't have to shower with ice cold water to trigger that response! It just have to be cold enough to be unconfortable. At some point someone told me it have to be at least 10°C below your normal temperature at the moment or so. When I got used to it, I showered with ice cold water in summer, but in autumn it had to be hotter because it was getting cold outside and I'm sensitive to low tenperatures. It was stil cold water. I'm just sating that the tenperature i was using had to adapt with my circumstances.
    It's just have to be unconfortable enough to trigger the noradrenaline to be released.

    You eat later. Just something your body has to get used to. Same with cold showers... Wouldn't do it that cold straight away. Start warm, turn slightly colder and finish even colder for about 10 seconds. Do this repeatedly and start challenging yourself to do 20 seconds and try even colder. This way it isn't as much of a shock to your system, but you still get the benefits.

    I believe the delay in eating was for fat loss. So you probably don't have to do it if you have low fat, or may be only 30-45 days a year?

      Do whatever works for you. If you feel you are being productive enough, no need to change your routine. I refuse to take a cold shower. I don't get up and walk in the mornings, but I do have a dog and we walk in the afternoon or evening. I eat breakfast, I drink tea, I like to sit in the sun - just not at at 5 AM. Huberman is just selling his version of 'fitness'. There actually no real science behind it.

    The only thing I have to say, is that your squats seem to be a little too deep. I’m gonna workout class right now for school and I was doing the same thing literally today and my professor was like don’t do that you need to do a full squat, not an Asian squat. It has to do with what muscles are being activated and deactivated in that motion. Other than that I’m definitely gonna try this routine. I already get up at like six so waking up 30 more minutes isn’t a big deal for me.

    I have always woken up at the time I intended to, no need for me to have an alarm, and also I have mastered the art of not waking up to his alarm, he wakes up at 3:30am and I wake at 6am. even when he kisses me goodbye I dont wake up, I just see it in the CCTV when I review it.

    Interesting, Maya but: Cold shower ? Never !!! I like to follow rather Maya Lee´s morning routine than andrew huberman´s. May he be a neuro scientist-the thing is: intermitted fasting is unhealthy and feels very bad ! If god had wanted us to not eat anything temporarily, he would have constructend us in a way, we feel good doing this. Fact is: It feels horibele ! I am not able to think, to work to just be a human being-no wonder: You also never start a car without any fuel in ist.
