SmartThings Edge Update: Announcing The End of SmartThings Groovy IDE Interface
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 сер 2022
- I received and update from SmartThings about their Edge Driver program. SmartThings has stated that they intend to terminate the Groovy IDE interface effective on September 30, 2022. Quoting from the email, “On September 30, 2022, Groovy device DTHs, SmartApps built on Groovy, and the legacy developer IDE will be removed from the SmartThings platform and will no longer be supported. This means that devices and automations previously using Groovy will now exclusively operate with our latest hub and cloud technology.”

Great update i fear for the future but hopeful
I share your concerns. Time is getting short and I still have many devices that I need to have converted over to Edge.
Good information thanks
You’re welcome 😉
Thanks For The Video
You're Welcome Hainie!
Thanks Bud, i'm hoping my "Konnected" home alarm will get converted.
I'm unsure if it will get converted Porky, but I'm hoping it does!
This is one of the main reasons I so enjoyed throwing my ST hub against the wall to celebrate my complete transformation to Home Assistant. I got tired of trying to hit a half-working moving target.
It's been a wild ride for sure! HA all the Way! 😜
@@BudsSmartHome Only 6 of my 55 devices have "Placeholder" as the type. I'm very concerned with what will happen on 9/30. So much so that I'm considering going the Home Assistant route. Do you anticipate doing a video anytime explaining how to get it installed? Thanks!
@@technoV0L - Are you asking me for help on getting Home Assistant installed?
Here is good video from Slacker Labs on transitioning for ST to HA. ua-cam.com/video/N0TzaPJYCa0/v-deo.html
@@BudsSmartHome Yes, I find your videos easy to follow and you do a great job explaining things in a way I can easily understand.
Thanks Bud for the Groovy update. I know you had previously put out a great video on using the Dome siren & all of its sound effects. Do you know if we can continue its use after Groovy has been discontinued? Thanks
Hey Dan the driver has been developed and has been released. If you go onto your SmartThings app and tap on your dome siren it should download the driver if it hasn’t already done so. You can check dome settings. As long as drivers listed in the drop-down list then you know that it’s already been updated to the new edge driver
Thanks Bud for your past & current help & videos, yours is some of the most helpful & very best!
Thanks 😊
Thank you for the link to the Edge Drivers. My question though is how do you copy and upload the individual device drivers code from that list? I usually go through IDE to add these codes.
Hi ONI1031. Please watch the following videos wherein I explain the process of adding Edge drivers...

What brand
is the digital thermometer on your table?
The thermometer you reference is a thermal and humidity sensor that Third Reality sent me. It is not publicly available until sometime in October. I have made a video which I will publish upon the release of the device.
I was wondering if anyone has gotten any contact sensors to work (outside of the samsung smartthings hardware) with all these changes. I have now tried 4 different brands. I have used 3rd party switches but the contact sensors seem to be the simplest design yet the most complex to get working in this new system. No big deal if I just need to wait a little longer.
Thanks for the detailed explanation as it explains a ton why I maybe have so many issues. Items that say "compatible" with smartthings are not. I keep purchasing, testing, and returning (thank you amazon).
Tom, Aeotec devices are a direct replication of the former SmartThings (ST) devices so the Aeotec Multipurpose sensor (amzn.to/3RHp3X5) will work out of box with ST. I have a entire list of window / door contact sensors here: www.amazon.com/shop/budssmarthome/list/1EG8OT6SY6T6I
Most of the listed sensors are compatible with the standard DTH that are in the process of being converted to Edge Drivers. A few do require Custom Device Handlers to work. I make compatibility statements about each device in each device description. Hope this helps.
I've had luck with Aqara contact sensors as well.
@@simplyaddo - good to know
@@BudsSmartHome Thank you for the link. I decided to purchase the SmartThings HUB and give it a shot. It worked perfectly while it was a little more expensive then I would like I think ill end up using it since it has the ZigBee protocol built-in.
As a software engineer and electrical engineer I was not really aware of how bad all this integration was. I had thought as an outsider it would all just work. It all seems to be hit-or-miss with different vendors. Having found your list prior to all my testing and getting frustrated I may have saved some time.
Either way I will continue to reference your list as we transition into the next smartthings wave of changes.
I do have one more question, do you happen to have a good recommendation for a Geni garage door upgrade for IoT. I seen some soldering wires into the remote or directly into the Geni. Either is fine by me but I was hoping to find one that I can control (or at least see the states) in actiontiles. This means it must be compatible with SmartThings. If you do not know I will buy all of them. Try them all out and return the others :)
Check out the following video:
Control Any Garage Door Opener in SmartThings - Including Chamberlain Openers
ua-cam.com/video/_xrucvB537E/v-deo.html
This method should work on garage door remote. However, you can likely run bell wire directly from the Zooz Zen16 zwave controller to your garage door opener rather than mess with Genie garage door remote.
Any ideas about updated edge drivers from zooz? Mainly concerned about the zen16 multi relay that I use for my garage doors. I'm thinking they need a new custom edge driver, or some other work around if you are aware of one?
As a matter of fact I just read the other night on the SmartThings community forum that Zooz has developed Edge Drivers for their devices. They have yet to release them because they want to be certain that the Edge Drivers offer all of the functions and capabilities that are now available in the Groovy architecture. They have stated that they fully expect to have fully functional drivers in place by 9/31/2022.
Wonderful if that is true, so I will remain hopeful with that. I was reading about other people worried about similar issues concerning multi relay style devices from all manufacturers. Mainly the problems with how the edge API cannot handle parent and child devices like the groovy platform did. Thank you for the feedback Bud.
Glad to help Jason. Keep automating my friend!
hello, what smart home dashboard can i use that will display my ring cameras and ring doorbells. I have been driving myself crazy over this. Can you help.
Ring doorbells are compatible compatible with Amazon devices. You can purchase an echo show 5, echo show 8 or echo show 10 to display your camera(s)

I have some Xfinity open/close sensors XHS2-SE that work with either the Smartsense open/close DTH or the Tyco door/window sensor DTH. The manufacturer shows up as Sercomm in the IDE. My research indicates that the Smartsense open/close sensor DTH will be transitioned to the zigbee-contact Edge driver. I looked at the fingerprint file and don't see anything for the Sercomm sensor. I'm totally new to this. Would I have to request "someone" to add this sensor to the fingerprint file? If so, how do I do that? If there is already a custom edge driver for this sensor, how would I go about finding it and getting an "invite" to enroll my hub?
You should go to the SmartThings Community and post your request there. Title is something like Seeking Edge Driver for Sercomm Xfinity open/close sensors XHS2-SE. In the body of the email include the text you provided to me and also go into your IDE, find the device(s), click on edit to view the device properties and take a screenshot of the device's "Data" and "Raw Description". Here is the link to the ST Community: community.smartthings.com/ As far as the how to get an invitation and install the edge driver, I am publishing a video this evening, is I get the editing done, which will give the information you seek.
@@BudsSmartHome Thanks for responding so quickly. I'll try that tomorrow.
@@marklieber7660 - My SmartThings Update is edited and rendering and it should be posted in about one hour.
So when groove IDE ends, how am i going to log in to my hub from my computer and get the same overview ?
According to the SmartThings Community, after the IDE disappears, the only ways one will be able to manage device/device settings, will be via:
* Your Apple or Android SmartThings App
* Using the CLI - developer-preview.smartthings.com/docs/sdks/cli/introduction/
* Using API clients like Postman 3 to make direct queries to the API.
> Postman - www.postman.com/
> API - developer-preview.smartthings.com/docs/api/public/
(Note: For this option, you’ll need a Personal Access Token to use in the authorization tab)
* my.smartthings.com page (Beta phase) - my.smartthings.com/
So before you ask, I am not familiar with the CLI or API clients.
Thanks for your question Ronni. I believe that in time the developers may be making the answer to this question more clear so that the average user can better visualize what is transpiring on the ST Hub.
Thank you so much for a quick response.
I guess I'll have to study it a bit more and see what works for me.
Thank you for your help, and your videos 🙏🙏🙏🙏
@@ronnitjensen6907 - You're Welcome Ronni
Any word on the trendsetter smart app?
According to the SmartThings Community, only the smart lighting SmartApp will be preserved. It will be migrated to 'Routines'.
Hi, do you know if Simulated Alexa Switch will be affected, will it still work after Sept 30? Thanks.
None of the Custom DTH’s will be supported after the Groovy IDE is terminated , which is delayed until October 15th. I am using TAustin’s Virtual Edge Drivers. You can use Austin’s virtual device creator to create a virtual switch that then can be used to replace the switch’s that you are using in you current routines. You can find information and instructions here: community.smartthings.com/t/st-edge-virtual-things-edge-driver/232875
@@BudsSmartHome Thank you very much for the Info!!!
You’re welcome Nelson.
My Simulated Alexa Switch doesn't show me the option to select a driver. Should I assume it has been moved to Edge?
@@simplyaddo - No. It has not been migrated to Edge. Any "Custom" device handler, like the "Simulated Alexa Switch" will not convert unless the original creator of the CDH writes an edge driver for the device, (in this case, a virtual switch). I have converted all of my Alexa Virtual Switched over to Edge Driver switches using TAutin's VEdge Creator community.smartthings.com/t/st-edge-vedge-creator-a-virtual-device-generator-for-end-users/231786 to create Virtual Contact Sensors (these are the only ones that I have found are sharable with the Alexa App). Just follow the instructions in the post to enroll your hub. Then use the vEdge Creator in your ST App to create the number of virtual devices you need to manage your routines. Then modify your routines by replace each "Simulated Alexa Switch" with the Edge supported vEdge Switch. You'll need to replace the switches in both the ST and Alexa routines.
⚰️
I have already migrate all my devices. It’s also a good opportunity. I am trying to migrate my OpenEnergy Monitor devices to Tasmota and connect them to my ST hub.
You are definitely ahead of most of us.
All I know is that I am havong more and more problems with the hub and smarthings. Samsung is becoming BS
