George Miller at 80 years old is still killing it! This is why I don't want Tarantino to retire, he's only 61. Look at the great films the legendary directors like George Miller, Ridley Scott, Spielberg, Scorsese etc are making in their 70s/80s
Furiosa is WAY more than just a “fine” film. Please see it a second time, you’ll appreciate it so much more on a second viewing. There was a LOT of expectation around this film- too much, honestly. It’s not Fury Road 2. It’s something else entirely, and it deserves recognition and its flowers. Comparison is the road to misery. Give this man his due! Is there anyone making films like this? Also love the take that Furiosa is more closely related to the OG Mad Max films- it totally is. People forget (or worse, don’t know) that Fury Road is NOTHING like any of its predecessors. Furiosa is a welcome return imo.
The opening scene of Furiosa was amazing and when she's chasing down Mr. D at the end it felt just like max 1 toe cutter chase scene the movie was awesome can't wait till the mad max fury road prequel that George talks about in interviews
To clarify your spoiler question: That shot of Max on the hill is absolutely NOT meant to be the opening of Fury Road. Pay close attention: Max's outfit is not as dirty and his hair is short. Look at the car, it's very clean, almost like it was at the end of Mad Max 1, it looks slightly less rusted and beat up, as if set just before The Road Warrior. Also, he's watching the Anya version of Furiosa, so it's like 10 (or more) years before Fury Road. (Also, Max was a blood-bag only for a few days).
I loved towards the end where we see these rusted out old cars like the doublerigged vw van and her 3wheeled car-there is a whole hierarchy of vehicles from the equisite chrome to the junker...if you look at road warrior not all the cars are tricked out.
Watched the movie last night in IMAX. *SPOILERS* ::: I think that scene with Max was to show that when Furiosa passed out after her arm got ripped off, that he went and dropped her off at Immortal Joe's Sanctuary. IE: The next shot is her waking up with the maggots and all that in the sanctuary. Makes me presume that max saw her faint, picked her up, dropped her off and then movie continues to play out the way it did. Otherwise Chris Hemsworth squad would've caught her and doesn't make sense how she got back to the sanctuary after fainting.
So good to see 3 of my boys back together again; I’m looking forward to seeing you all together in an episode again! Can’t wait to sit down and watch this whole thing this afternoon, you guys are the best. #ReelBlend4Lyfe
@@TylerDietz Haha, I kid! Of course, man. We appreciate anyone caring enough to listen. Life gets busy! Thanks for sticking around, and have a great weekend!
I'm totally with you on the bigger, stronger, more ferocious impact of Fury Road's practical stunts, as teased back at us in the credits of "Furiosa". (52:44) Just like you, I thought "Now THAT'S Mad Max!!! I feel it in my bones." Having said that, I went back to "Furiosa" at my local a second time and still enjoyed it. On the other hand, I went to "Fury Road" five times at the same place in '15. Oh well- I still like "Furiosa" better than "Thunderdome". So at worst, it's the 4th greatest of the Maxes ;) George "Cool Uncle" Miller's still a hero of mine. Thanks for letting him talk!
44:05 THANK YOU! Finally someone said it. The CGI/green screen was especially noticeable on the IMAX screen. Going to re-watch on a regular screen...maybe the graininess of that will flatten out some of the obvious special effects. My ultimate wish is if/when Miller releases a black and "chrome" version like he did for Fury Road. That might be the best way to hide some of the clunky CGI in this one and give it a neo-silent era aesthetic. And yes, of course there was green screen/CGI in Furiosa...but it was just executed in a more believable way. The film 300 was basically all green screen but it essentially worked because of the lighting, atmosphere, and stylized surrealism of the film. That could have been done here...hopefully this can be improved on a 4K disc release or black and white version.
I agree George is very aggressive with the vfx in this film but I ate it up. My hope is for future films he gets a better cinematographer. I noticed the green screen issues in past Simon Duggan films ie The Great Gatsby and Hacksaw Ridge.
That's such an awesome talk. I was craving some longer form interview from him, coz all the other ones are capped at aroughly 14 minutes, and each time I felt like I would love to hear him talk about filmmaking for hours ! Great catch about the sound engines FX being basically part of the score ! That's the mark of great directors : When they know how Cinema is an AUDIOvisual form of art and how to play with their sounds to bring the musicality out of it, so that it doesnt overlap or compete with the score but they actually work together. It reminded me of the recent The Batman, when we're first introduced to the new Batmobile, and how its engine just screamed in the theater (I saw it in IMAX, with a killer THX sound system, and I felt it in my bones !). Sound engineers are so important to the final quality of a movie. Ok, talking about that, now I want a Battinson Batman with his muscle Batmobile x Mad Max Fury Road crossover (he'd be a fantastic addition in the wastelands). Matt Reeves, George Miller, please make it happen !
Can we get a May recap with the 3 of you guys with your extended thoughts on Fall Guy, Apes, If and Kevin’s thoughts on Furiosa? Since there werent episodes focused on those films.
these guys make so happy - its so nice being able to listen to people who love movies as much as we do. listening after see furiosa. what an experience. thor was just practice for chirs hemsworth compared to this. he was so sick
Oh that token signature shot of Max overlooking the desert plain as Furiosa staggers across it nursing the stump of her missing arm could not have been the opening shot of "Fury Road" because following that moment, she slogs back the rest of the way to the Citadel, constructs herself a mechanical arm, then goes back out amidst the 40 Day Road War, grabs the Cranky Black car, takes out her vengeance on Dementus then returns again to the Citadel where we see the various versions of his death including ending his days as soil, and only THEN do we see her from the back and sounding like Charlize, smuggling the wives into the new black War Rig, years having now passed. At least that's how I remember it, having figured Max had visited that ridge near the Citadel before in the course of his wanderings. I like the fact he's seen her this time without knowing how significant she'd become.
I think what’s happening at the end of Furiosa is that there’s a bit of a time jump that we as audiences don’t see but understand because we’ve seen Fury Road and we know how that movie starts. So Anya does age up, we just don’t see it. And if I’m remembering correctly, Max in the cameo doesn’t have the long hair he has at the start of Fury Road. So he is just placed there as a cameo and not in relation to the timing of events. I think it’s meant to add more to George’s idea that he always knows where Max is at all times sort of adding to him being this mythical type of hero and wanderer
Yeah, when you see Max she's literally on her way back from escaping Dementus with her arm hacked off. There's an entire war that happens after that. Not sure how they misinterpreted it so badly
Between the cameo and Max, they have the wastelands war. So the ending doesn't flow directly into Fury Road. Also, after Furisoa returns much time passes as they all age up. In fact the scene with the brides being placed in the tanker is Charlize in that scene. So it's not a direct flow from movie to movie, probably 10-20 year gap.
Have to admit that I absolutely hated Mad Max way back in 1981 when I saw it the first time, 'cause as a very immature sensitive 18-year-old country Aussie girl, I was totally traumatised by it and literally cried my eyes out for 2 hours after... I found it by far the most terrifying thing I had ever seen or could ever imagine!! For the next 20 years the sound of a group of bikes when I was alone out in the country scared the bejeezus out of me!!!!!😂😂
Have you seen the fan made Hope and Glory yet? It is meant as a tribute to George Miller, so he can enjoy a Mad Max movie as an audience member for once.
The idea of Max being Bond-like is very cool. And I adore Fury Road. But the thing is that Tom Hardy doesn’t come anywhere near Gibson’s character defining performance. No one will ever top that.
Brad Pitt isn't 6"3 though. Hemsworth is capable of giving a great performance but whenever he's tried to branch out it's been met with either pure disinterest or outright hostility, varying with the quality of the film: Blackhat, Bad Times at the El Royale, Spiderhead, etc. Drive and In the Heart of the Sea were critically well received but didn't light up the box office. So he's kind of stuck with Thor if he wants to retain some semblance of box-office clout in the near future.
Saw Furiosa last night. Blew my mind, but not as insanely good as Fury Road. It's more savage, and brutal and has a profoundly demented villain, but slower paced and more CGI. It deserves a second viewing though, and better than other films this year that are lacking on many levels.
Saw Furiosa today. Enjoyed it, but fury road is still his masterpiece. This one is overlong. Too many storylines and all those main characters are portrayed as badasses. After some time, you stop caring about the characters and just sit there for the stunts.
He was irradiated early on and survives…c’mon guys! Love this series’s. To be fair, Max didn’t have over 20 lines. I don’t know…he didn’t speak much. I also saw a-lot but f green screen in the trailer and it spooked me, but damn if I won’t pony up!
Is there still time to digitally add JoJo Siwa’s current incarnation on stage somewhere in this new George Miller epic? She fit right in. I’ve already paid for it three times and it hasn’t even been released yet, love having kids with great taste.
@sean, gratuitous?! Really? You are THAT bothered by it. You guys are really nitpicking if that scene is the first thing you mention in the spoiler section and that something so small bothers you.
Brad Pitt is a bad example I think because he has always been a character actor. He did almost the opposite og Hemsworth he did the action blockbuster leading man later in his career.
A cynic (and me being one) could say that the reason they put the Fury Road outtakes during the end credits is due to Miller and the producers knowing they had a dud on their hands; and they wanted the audience to at least leave the theater on an upbeat note - by playing the nostalgia card and reminding them of the last film they actually liked.
George is 80 and he wasted a year directing a meaniless movie He will be dead by the time he wants to immortalise the franchise with a movie that pushed the story forward.
