Can 10% povidone iodine be used in the event of a deep wound or laceration to clean/wash/flush out the wound and disinfect it before a topical such as a triple antibiotic is used? We are doing remote hiking where there is not access to running clean water to wash a deep wound out with and I can not find any solid information on what to use other that the genetic "wound wash" recommendation. Some articles say iodine can't be used in puncture and deep wounds like animal bites but give no explanation as to why or what to use in its place and I feel an aerosol spray is not capable of penetration required to flush and disinfect a deeper wound or puncture. Thanks much for your help in advance!

Liquid povidone iodine used to clean out any wound you may get on the trail is perfectly fine. This is always what I tell people to use in these types of situations. I believe you were reading about the topical paste when it said not to use in deep wounds and punctures. I personally like Vaseline for wounds, to keep the would hydrated and bandages from sticking instead of the triple antibiotic.
Sorry this is late, so you CAN use liquid iodine in a deep wound or something that is more then superficial? I have been finding a lot confusing and conflicting information on this. As OP said I am looking for something to use to flush more intense wounds if a higher echelon of care isn't available.@@NurseAlyssa39
Recent practice is to clean povidone iodine with saline, just not to let it contact with wound for too long. What is your opinion about it?
Hello, that is a great question! So I guess it depends why you are using it. If the wound is clinically infected and we are using this to locally treat the infection we need an antimicrobial to stay on the wound.( any form). I have not specifically heard that you need to wash it off this could just be location specific policy as I'm not aware of the change. Once the iodine is gone (turns white or clear on the dressing it has all been absorbed). With this said their are max amounts of iodine we should be using per week.
If the wound is not clinically infected and we are using it to reduce bacterial burden on a non-healing wound (we are using this as drying agent to keep it dry , so you would not want to wash it off with saline as this would add unwanted moisture . I hope this clarifies .
Hi! What would you recommend as dressing for deep open foot ulcers? On the clinic Im bringing my mom they instruct to use gauze with betadine to stuff inside the wound. Is it safe? Or is it doing more harm to the wound. Appreciate any immediate response from you or anyone with knowledge on wound care. Its first time we encounter it and we want to support her healing faster. Thanks

There are many factors that need to be looked at while choosing a dressing, if the wound is infected or has suspected biofilm, yes, betadine is appropriate (safe either way). I would need to do a full wound assessment to determine if that is the best choice for your wound. ( thewoundconsultant.com) betadine is good if they are trying to dry the wound.

Iodine has a drying effect. I have never heard of anyone one doing this. I am curious how it works! let me know, and did a dr recommend this?

I would suggest going to see your primary health provider for this .Treatment for your scalp infection may include an antifungal medication, antifungal shampoo, foam or ointment.

Is it okay after applying this I will apply flammazine too in my wounds?
I personally do not like mixing antimicrobials, I would clean the wound with normal saline then apply the flamazine.

Yes, you can put some on a cotton ball and apply.
