Just pulled the plug and bought the Canyon Spectral-ON CF-9 in Europe which has the beefy Fox 160mm Performance Elite Grip 2 E-bike tuned 38 shock front and 150mm Float X Evol rear with GX Axs T-type groupset. Loving it!
After a month of researching these exact two bikes, I finally pulled the trigger on the YT Core 4 in the silver like yours! After deciding that YT was going to be the manufacturer, I was then in between the Core 4 and the Core 5. I asked questions in the YT Decoy owners group and ultimately decided on the 4 because of the Ohlin suspension. I was also interested in the electric derailleur on the 5 but i read that SRAM GX AXS is a better derailleur so i will be upgrading eventually.
Great, thank for sharing. I think you will be really happy with the Ohlins suspension. We are probably benefiting from the fact Ohlins is still building their brand recognition in the Mtb space.
Great comparison video! Exactly what I was looking for. Was leaning towards the YT because I have buds that ride it, now I'm sold. Thanks for the great content! Although I need to demo the Decoy SN now, never ends....
I really appreciate your videos and want to sincerely thank you for all the effort you put into them. Your beautifully lit shots, perfect audio, and the stunning trails around Tahoe make for an amazing viewing experience. I’m 54 and live near Santa Monica, with a desert home that has some great nature trails. I did consider the CF8 and CF9, but I believe the CFR is a significant step ahead of those two, especially now at $6k! The carbon frame is superior, and the components are top-notch. Your two bikes, I think, were a bit too similar to each other from the start. Not having a hitch, I do wonder about managing a heavier machine around the house and on the car, so I’m also considering the Orbea Rise M10-now only 42 lbs and going for $5k on Jenson, which I’m sure you’re familiar with. I've watched many of your videos and have learned so much. I hope to comment more in the future, if that’s not a bother. Nice meeting you! - Morez
Thank you Morez, it’s appreciation like yours that encourages me to keep this going! The Orbea Rise does seem like a great deal, and as you say, offers quite a different option. I’ve been looking for a way to create a light ebike from the nice components I have on a hi-spec Trek Fuel Ex. Just need the frame/motor/battery assembly. Maybe the Obrea Rise might be an option allowing me to upgrade it with the EX parts and still have another complete bike. Thanks for watching and for sharing your knowledge.
@@roadlesstraveledtruckee Thank you so much for responding to me so quickly. I have 3,000 subscribers on UA-cam and hundreds of videos, but I don’t think I’ve spent, in total, as much time as you do on a single video. Most of mine have no faces, captions, openings, or added music. Just the good old 'push record button and then push upload' method. The new Orbea models that just came out this year, lt and sl are said to be an engineering leap ahead of the previous one available on Jenson USA. Apparently, with some clever engineering, they've managed to boost battery and motor efficiency, allowing for insane elevation gains with the same wattage. When I did some calculations based on what people were reporting about their elevation gains, compared to a purely 100% efficient system, it seemed like there was only about a 20% inefficiency in the whole setup, which is pretty hard to believe. As you know, a battery with a certain amp-hour rating translates into a specific number of joules of energy. This energy can be used to move a mass, like a 100 kg person, to a certain height against gravity. 100kg raised to 1000 meters or 3000ft would require minimum 100x1000x10 N/kg= 1 million jules. A 100-watt-hour battery would provide 100x3600 seconds= 360,000 joules of energy. Ideally, one joule would equate to one newton×1meter of work, but with real-world factors like tire friction and gravel, there’s always much energy loss. Regarding your question about using components from high-end setups, I recently came across an e-bike frame set sold by ARI for $4,500, which included the motor, battery, rear suspension, and other misc components. While the price might seem steep for just a frameset, considering that it’s a complete set with these critical parts, it actually doesn’t sound like a bad deal. Especially since the frame needs to be specially designed to handle the forces an e-bike generates, and most companies don’t offer group sets for custom builds and that price may come down further. Probably the more interesting thing about ARI is that they offer a 30-day trial where you can test them on your own trails and return them if you’re not satisfied. I think that’s pretty unique, but feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. I’m not a pro in mountain biking-I’ve only been seriously into it for about six months-but with my background in engineering and science, I’ve found it fascinating and have been researching different models. At this stage in life, getting outdoors, exercising, and engaging in activities that challenge both the body and mind is something both my wife and I really enjoy. Anyway, there’s so much more to say on this topic, but I’ll stop here. Thanks again for all your videos and for taking the time to respond to my comment.
The Orbea Rise M10 for 5k is 2023? I looked at the battery size and it’s only 360wh. I don’t think that’s big enough. Minimum you should have 630 and up to ride comfortably through the day. Otherwise it might not be worth the weight savings if you have to worry about running out of power.
Thanks for this Morez. My wife and I discovered our love of mountain biking when we moved to the mountains recently and realized we are in the middle of mountain biking paradise. As you say, it is so nice to be outside, working out, and having fun, and …all without being on the same road with large ICE vehicles. I will check out ARI, thank you. There is one other that’s name is escaping me right now but I think uses a pinion motor which could be interesting. Thanks also for walking through the physics. As you know, it is really hard to calculate energy use with the conditions we experience on Mtb with all the variables you suggest plus ups and downs of obstacles and acceleration of wheels and us with each pedal stroke. My friend and I have the same bike, weigh the same, ride together, but at the end of a ride I can typically have up to 10% more battery life left. Maybe more efficient peddling, lighter wheels, … ?
Nice vid again. My choice came down to these 2 exact bikes. As we’ve spoken about in the past I chose the YT for the following reasons. It’s an enduro bike with more travel vs the Canyon which is imo really a trail or all mtn bike. Since I occasionally ride bike parks the YT was a better fit. Didn’t want to have to make any aftermarket additions and the YT out of the box was perfectly spec’d (when I picked it up at YT the employee who set it up for me said it was the best model in his opinion even over the top the the line build). I did not want cable routing through headset as this really presents problems if making changes on the Canyon. While the Canyon does come with a 900WH battery on the larger sizes, the small and medium batteries are 720WH only so for me that was a wash. In addition I was able to visit the YT Mill store in San Clemente to get my bike and to have service etc which is not possible with Canyon (they also installed the race software for my EP801 motor when I picked it up). Lastly was price. Both were on sale but I was able to get the YT for $5200 which was only $400 more than the Canyon which sealed the deal. Just my 0.02. Thx again.
My YT Decoy Core 4 arrived today and has a dime sized chip on the frame above the motor 😣 right in the silver paint. I was looking forward to riding it this weekend but I’ll probably need to send it back to receive a new one
@@roadlesstraveledtruckee also noticed that the coil was scratched bad, the battery wouldn’t turn on (fully charged), and the 35mm bar clamps were more like 30mm. Wish I was a UA-camr so I could document everything because my experience has been awful. Even with no paint chip or scratched coil, I couldn’t ride the bike. The handlebar can’t even be installed! Hope YT customer service can make this right but they don’t do exchanges so it will be a long time until they can process my return and refund my card so I have the capital to buy it again. Really disappointed in YT

Just grabbed a used decoy. I enjoy the removable battery. Does the Canyon have that feature as well? Researching decoy stuff is how I found your channel and very much enjoying the content.
Great, happy you enjoy it. Much of my content will be based on these two bikes at this point and any other knowledge I can share. The Caron battery is also removable but just slightly more difficult I think since it slides out the bottom and you need to really crouch down to do it. Thanks again!
I bet you like the YT a little better right now! 4 months ago, I purchased the spectral:on cf7. Only because I missed the sale on the YT. So, with this canyon battery issue, I’m looking at the YT again, as it’s on sale again. Would you have any concerns with the wiring harness or battery on the YT?
Really interested to see what Canyon will do. The YT connector is great. Solid and easy access. Battery is easy to get on and off and seems well built but I might have said the same about the Canyon before this.
I did the same thing, missed the yt sale, bought a cf7 in July. Now I’m about to pull the trigger on the core 4, because who knows when the canyon will be safe to ride again.
