Wow! Thanks for the video! I'm going to use this same technique to make an internal storage on the downtube of my enduro bike, like newer frames has. I'll cut the hole, reinforce the inside surroundings with unidirectional cf, and make a cap with bottle holes (bike has no bottle holes) :D
You are an amizing guy. I like your Videos so much. Bin Auszubildend als Zweiradmechatroniker mein Ziel in diesem Beruf, ist so Profi wie du zu werden. Beste Grüße und weiter so
Nice job on the repair 👍, don’t forget to use nitrile or vinyl-gloves when using epoxy. Epoxy allergy is a real thing, which everybody with enough exposure will get, and for your job something I really wouldn’t want to get.
Excellent tutorial! The only issue I seems you should be using a much slower curing epoxy - slower cure rates ultimately mean longer polymerization chains, which makes for a much stronger epoxy and therefore repair. Using a fast cure plus heat does not lend itself to good long term strength of repair.
Nice work. Some ideas for yur consideration... - use a wood glue utility brush instead of ear swab - mount a heat lamp bulb or two in a ceramic socket to ceiling above workbench to aid in epoxy wetting out CF, works great aircraft composite project - put layer of dacron peel ply on top of finished layup then cover with shrinking tape, when dry and peeled off has nice mat finish Thanks again....
Brilliant. Love that you share these tips and skills. Have just sent a frame away for repair, but with these tips might just try myself next time. The shrinking tape and fast-set epoxy are great tip. One question with resins - are the slow set epoxies more durable than the quick set, or just useful for different things? I repaired my hockey stick a few years ago and was advised to get the slow setting epoxy as it cuould withstand more and would last longer.
This was absolutely the best DIY video I have seen yet! Ausgezeichnet!! Just out of curiosity... could you use body filler on minor scratches and areas where the damage is too small for the tape or do you just use the resin?
When I've done this, I mix the epoxy, then cut small pieces of carbon fiber (roughly 1mm long) and mix it with the epoxy. Then apply to the scratch/ chip. Not really for crack in the carbon, but more as a filler. It sands, primes and paints well. Not sure if this the best way, but has turned out well for me
Hallo Martin, Danke für das Video. Kannst du bitte noch ein paar Links nennen wo du die Materialien einkaufst? Oder was du empfehlen könntest um es daheim machen zu können. Vielen Dank
I have the same issue on the same area in my frame but mine looks like more structural damage (chain got stuck, I got pissed off...the rest is history) to the point that the carbon can be moved by putting pressure with the finger. I suppose that's not a DIY job...well put it this way i wouldn't be very confident going down hill knowing that I stuck some small pieces of Carbon myself....,😰. So the new frame is coming. Good thing is I have seem your DIY paint job and it's gonna look great! 👍
11:50: anybody who's worked on old-school leftys knows this trick to hold the four outer bearing races in place while you install the lower leg and needle bearings.
Great videos, interesting and provides value. Question, I'm doing a relatively minor repair on the top tube road frame. I bought carbon fiber fabric cloth, 3k 200g/m2 plain weave. I need to buy the resin now, and at first i was going to buy 1:1 ratio resin off Amazon, but is there a specific resin i should be using. thanks very much.
Besides reference to UV protective resin, i've read folks using "marine-grade epoxy resin" and other resin's that were suppose to be stronger, which was not a 1:1 ratio? I can see the benifits for a fast resin, as you mentioned.
No touch up is payed badly and more work than painting the entire frame but watch these videos where I show how to do it: ua-cam.com/video/oUFiP3uosUU/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/fkJhFu3wEVk/v-deo.html
Shoutout from Germany I have damage in the same spot on my BMC frame so this is an awesome video for me! it also answered my question of how deep is too deep when sanding down. One question I do have is why are you using unidirectional carbon sheets instead of a 90 degree twill? also, how far away should I tape from my damaged area? if I have a crack that's 5 mm in diameter, should I tape up to 10 mm away? 20? 50? is there a rule of thumb?
Super! I'm learning from your videos. But what if there is a crack on the beam? which goes from the drop to the seat tube. Almost in the middle. What should I do in this case? you can't get in from the inside!
@ETOE, Awesome paint jobs but how do you know if there are no delamination on the accident chain stays in the existing carbon, do you have access to ultra scan?
it's insane how light that frame looks while u hold it with one hand...one of these days i hope to ride a carbon frame...im already impressed with aluminum....
unless you ride for races or off road i wouldnt consider carbon for city use or anything else honestly, i used a have one and i was constantly worried that it would break when locking it up next to other bikes. it also depends on the quality carbon fiber bike you get some are stronger some are weaker keep that in mind
I only want to remove the white logo on the downtube from a matte black carbon frame. Do I only need to sand it as in the video, or do I need to put something on after to protect the frame if I only want the matte black finish?
Great workmanship. Curious how are those holes occurred and are you going re-drill them again especially the one for the cable in the rear. Any tip for deep scratch lines without patching the carbon fiber.
+ Is wet sanding possible with carbon frames to avoid toxic carbon dust?

Julius Meier Fully agree!
You should not touch carbon with bare skin, the grease causes delamination
Painters have to die young because they are bad payed and will retire poor if not died young. So no gloves needed!
