  • As mentioned in an earlier video, we needed to fix up Luci, our nearly-forty-year-old Daimler Double Six, after our road trip to the Peak District.
Here's our How-to Guide for adjusting front wheel bearings on your XJ12, XJS and Daimler!
    0:00 Wait for the sound!!
Step 1: Loosen front wheel nuts (0:33)
Step 2: Chock, raise the car and place an axle stand underneath before removing the front wheel in question.
Step 3: Stick the magnetic DTI base to the hub. Then, put the tip of the DTI square on the face of the break disk. (0:49)
Step 4: Place a lever (for example, a screw driver) in the top of the disk.
Step 5: Lever backwards and forwards, being careful not to rotate the disk and take note of the play in the bearing on the DTI gauge as you lever your screw driver. (1:59)
Step 6: Using a suitable manual, look up the correct tolerances for the bearing (2:23). If your play is too great, continue to the next step. If not, congrats! Put your wheel back on :)
Step 7: Carefully prise the grease cap from the bearing. (2:45)
Step 8: Remove the safety clip and the collett around the bolt (you'll notice I had a slightly less accurate name for it!) (3:16)
Step 9: Carefully tighten the wheel bearing nut, while monitoring the play in your bearing, using the DTI gauge. (4:24)
Step 10: Confirm that your break disk can still turn. If not, loosen the wheel bearing nut slowly. (5:05)
Step 11: Once the play is correct, ensure the collett and clip will align and refit. (5:54)
Step 12: Then, refitting is the reversal of removal (steps 2 and 1). (6:34)
If one side needs doing, odds are that the other one needs some attention too!

Exactly it's amazingly simple when you figure it all out. Even the engine!

Is your universal spanner SAE or Metric? 🙂 Good video, very informative. I have a '94 XJS & have wondered what that looks like.
