MsPotatobag those who migrate need to learn another language, maybe english, spanish, it depends on where they go, so those who migrate to usa for example, make the number of people who speak english increase
don't be so narrow minded, at least a seventh of the world's population speaks mandarin. nearly 4x the amount that speak spanish. just because it's not relevant to you doesn't mean it's not relevant at all! it's seen as an important language to international business, since china is wealthy and powerful. and a handful of countries other than china speak it as well
MsPotatobag you didn't understand what i was trying to say, of course chinese is way more important than spanish when it comes to international business. I just think that english is the world's language, the language that almost everybody can speak and understand, at least a little bit
English is definitely the most useful language. It's the international language of business. It's also the official language of aviation: air traffic controllers, worldwide, must know English.
+Clyde Wary I went on a 2 month Euro Trip. In every hostel I've been through throughout Europe it was understood that English was the "bridge" language so people could communicate. The fact that people from America, UK and Australia don't bother learning new languages says it all!
naponroy I didn't include Canadians on purpose. The ones I met came from a variety of different ethnic roots. Most knew English, French and whatever their parents spoke.
+Clyde Wary that is right Im brazilian, and almost every important company ask for people who speak english and spanish. brazil has many trades with china. but the meetings are made in english. in rio de janeiro there are many oli plataforms many are administrated by people from netherlands they also speak english. so english is the mainly lingua franca in the world.
I don't agree. I think English is, by far, the most important language in the world nowadays and this is not going to change any time soon. And i dare say that the second one is Spanish. Maybe in the future this could change but Chinese is not very important out of China right now.
robert111k even tho english is an important language it is still the #3 most spoken language in the world. 1st being chinese of course because of china's population and 2nd being spanish because of its vast influence in central and south america
Actually I could see that *starting* to change in the next few years or so and see Chinese becoming more important than English. This is just my opinion of course
French may not have a large number of native speakers, but, traveling a lot I met so many people that speak French. It's a language with a very rich culture, and that had a lot of influence in the world. So, it deserves to be there in the top 5.
I currently speak french and english fluently and I'm learning arabic and spanish :) Since I'm from Mali (west Africa) , I also speak bambara. Learning a new language's like discovering a new world , I love it.
English is the most useful language in the world and that is why it has the most number of people learning it as a second language,y native language is spanish, but than i learned english, manderin only has the highest number of native speakers but people dont really learn it as a second language like english
+victor j Ryan Yes, exactly, if you aren't a native speaker of english and you don't know how to speak it, you should learn it. Very usefull n.n Im native speaker of spanish in Argentina, learning english in the highschool
Well, I am from China, but I have to admit that maybe English is the No.1 useful language in the world, maybe the population who speak Mandarin is the most, but the area people speak English is the widest.
The most useful languages are: 1. English The reasons are quite obvious 2. Spanish It is the second most spoken language in the world (by native speakers) and at the same time is distributed in several nations with a growing middle class. The World Bank forecasts show that Latin America will enter the First World in the middle of this century. If we add that Hispanics will be most in USA (2050), it is easy to understand the importance of this language. At the moment, Spanish is very useful at the regional level, particularly in the areas of trade and marketing, however, falters in the areas of pharmaceutical and technology. 3. French The birth rate of African member countries of the Francophonie is the great advantage of the French. The problem of this language is its essential dependence of France. It's not like the English or Spanish that can live while the earth swallow to England and Spain. In other words, as the French language is not part of African culture, it is not difficult for the Anglo-Saxon World seduce to the francophone African if they can make profits with it. 4. Mandarin. It is the most spoken language in the world, however, is only useful in certain regions of China (not all). The weakness of this language is in the little attractiveness of the lack of democracy in China, adding that Mandarin is difficult in learning for the Western World. 5. German It is the direct adversary of the French in Europe besides being a great advantage in the areas of pharmaceutical and technology. Its weakness is the low birthrate of their natives , so it is easy that German to lose its current relevance in few decades.
as a Chinese, i agree with you partly. but Chinese is easy to speak, though hard to write. as for the democracy, i guess that is,not a big problem in terms of learning a new language. Maybe because you are from an old democratic country. Any way, warm welcome to China !
+Alin Banka Well, perhaps I exaggerate a little when to say that Hispanics will be most in 2050 (USA), but I'm aware that the sons of mix of Hispanics with a person from another culture often declare itself Hispanic. In the US, the ethnic identity is much stronger than the national identity. Hispanic, White, Black are identities stronger than "American". If the Spanish does not grow by the Hispanic immigration, grows by development of Latin America (combination of nations of Spanish speakers have a GDP surpassed only by China and USA). Even the UK has Spanish as the most important language for the british. Look this www.britishcouncil.org/sites/britishcouncil.uk2/files/languages-for-the-future-report.pdf
Seriously? Some people in the comments section need a slap on the face. Lets face the facts. The languages mentioned in this video are actually the most used languages for whatever reasons. Like it or not. We all know that. You don't have to be mean just because you THINK (which is not a fact) that this language shouldn't be in the list or you think your language is more important than other languages or you just don't like a certain language.. seriously? You don't have to be so close minded omg!! Some people need to learn how to state their opinion in a respectful way. No need for being so hateful and call names and shit 😑😑😑
I don't understand the hate. All languages mean something to someone! And they all have their own kind of beauty!! There's no need to criticise other languages -_-
Funky Nun pls -_- some people here say at other languages "shit language". This is being close minded. Being open minded is to accept other cultures. I didn't say you must not disagree! I said state your opinion in a respectful way and there was no need for being hateful!!! Don't you understand?
I'm so glad that Spanish is in the top 3, as it's such an important language with a strong global dominance. I'm also glad you mentioned Portuguese, German and Russian in the end, all very important business languages, like Spanish and the other languages listed previously.
lmao its bc the british/english colonized half the planet. the biggest empire in history, they settled and exploited various countries and people around the world.
Ash m This is one of the reasons, but also because of a long history of violence against ethnic chinese in Indonesia, which lead to many of them abandoning their cultures and changing their names etc. Look up the May 1998 riots of Indonesia
The indonesian chinese people that can't talk mandarin are mostly born at java & the years of 1970-2010 those who are born outside of java mostly still fluent of mandarin & i think the 2010 many schools already started teaching mandarin
+Chris Taino you should've just said UK and Ireland.. because Great Britain only refers to England, Wales, and Scotland.. Northern Ireland isn't included.. but still apart of UK..
The DerpDude there are books on languages, and lots of sources on the internet. I write down all the stuff I learn in a notebook, and that's how I'm learning
Pablo Guerrero Perhaps there are some Chinese people in Spain and you have never seem them before. By the way, I agree with you that few native Spanish will learn Chinese😂...
For those that don't understand, this video is Chris's *opinion* , and not the most widely spoken languages. The most widely spoken languages, in order, are: Chinese: Over 1,000,000,000 speakers. Spanish: Over 400,000,000 speakers English: Over 300,000,000 speakers Hindi: Over 250,000,000 speakers Arabic: Over 200,000,000 speakers
Leto85 The video wasn't based on the number of people that speak it, it was based on how widespread the language is. For example, you'll really only find a bunch of people speaking Hindi in India; that's why it wasn't on the list. French is not spoken by nearly as many people, but it covers multiple continents, making it more widespread. As for ***** , what are you talking about?
Ashley Miller Thanks for your reply. I understand the video was based on how widespread the languages mentioned are (doesn't that equals the importance of the language in its own?) but still the line in the video I took as if a fact was brought in the form of an opinion. I hope I've explained this better then before. ***** I must admit that I didn't get your text either. I envy you for speaking English and Spanish! Both are my favorite foreign languages. But I'm getting there.
I live in southeast asia and not so much people understand mandarin, but they do understand english very well so I think english is most widely spoken it cover around the world
Jared Kobar, bro don't care about it..... Even when he was Speaking about Mandarin Chinese, the Map Showed That it has Influence in INDIA too... Whereas We Indians Don't Speak that Language, not even 0.01% of Indians Speaks it.... This list is just Based on his Own Thinking....😏😎.
Yeah, pretty much everyone who is "Chinese" in North America, aren't even technically Chinese, they all fled Hong Kong before the handover to China, so they aren't Chinese.
Chinese in India????? I am from India, We don't speak or understand chinese. We speak Hindi 4th most spoken lang in the world, That you forgot to mention. Chinese only spoken in China. While, Hindi(Hindustani=Hindi+urdu) is spoken not only in India but also in pakistan, maurities, uae, nepal & in fiji (where it is an official language as fiji Hindi.)
You are wrong.Malaysian and Singapore also speaks Chinese. Some people speak Chinese in Vietnam, Myanmar ,Thailand,Australia ,Canada ,United States。Are there Indians in Australia and Canada?haha
毒on9买你们奶粉不是刺激你们消费吗还怕买光真可笑哪个地方怕人家买东西 港 I don't understand what you are trying to say but what I am saying is that in India there are no one that can speak chinese. even the chinese immigrants in India (just over 5000 in no.) Speaks Indian regional languages & not chinese. & of course Indians do live outside India & there are notable no. of them in Australia,USA & canada.
Shantanu Upadhyay this was a list of useful languages. You only mentioned a couple of countries, with India being the only one with any international significance. I'm sorry to say friend, but learning Hindi isn't very useful if you aren't planning to move to India.
Xuhao Liu As a native Spanish speaker, a fluent speaker of English and Japanese, and a learner of German and French, I must say, you make great choices! Just out of curiousity, which Chinese language is your native tongue?
I live in China but I don't think Chinese should be first, I mean, it's useful only if you travel to China... so compared to other languages spoken in several countries it's not really useful.
+Helsic Yiverus yeah if you see this guy highlighted Malaysia also. But you know what ? Me myself as Malaysian want to correct even here those Chinese mostly speak English rather than Mandarin itself. Even I'm Malay guy live in Malaysia, I didn't speak Mandarin Chinese and if you guys travel here with only ability to speak Chinese , believe me you'll lost because you still need English and Malay to travel all Malaysia ! I meant to say is Mandarin Chinese shouldn't be on the #1 place. *just 2 cent of my opinion*
+Helsic Yiverus Who the hell wants to go to Pakistan? I'm not racist against the people but the country has got several terrorist groups that can molest civilians at any moment, plus India is right there ready to invade it...
If u know Chinese, it's not only useful in China. You can use in Thailand Taiwan Indonesia hongkong Singapore Malaysia. Also if you know Chinese ,it will be more easy to learn Japanese and Korean. In addition, Chinese has huge influences in Asia
@@marcmoulin7342 Arabic is not langage ,, Arabic is different 100% between Kuwait and Algeria, no one can understand each other, Egyptian speak egyptian dialect, and algerian speak DARIJA, Can Lebaneese underdstand Moroccan ?? NO so, Arabic is really not a real langage
¡Saludos!
Kevin Yang omg, no! we speak portuguese. We were colonized by Portugal. you never took geography lesson? hahaha i bet you thought we spoke "brazilian", huh? lol :p
+Kevin Yang because most Brazilians are descendant from the Portuguese. I'm Portuguese, but I have Brazilian relatives, directly in São Paulo state, because of my great grandparent, my grandparent came back, but most stayed there and developed their families, so they are 100% Brazilians.
My list: 1. English (You need it on the internet and basically everywhere else.) 2. Latin (I love the literature, it's good for personal development.) 3. French (If you wanna go to Africa.) 4. Japanese (Anime, and Japanese tourists everywhere.^^) 5. German (Great authors.) 6. Spanish (Great music, lots of speakers around the world.) 7. Mandarin (Lots of speakers and you're perceived as sophisticated if you just mention you speak it.) 8. Turkish (In certain cities in Germany, it's the foreign language you'll hear most.) 9. Russian (Again, you hear it a lot in Germany, also great authors.) 10. Arabic (Lots of speakers everywhere and rich culture.) The culture argument goes for every language as long as you're curious. I mean culture in terms of history and politics of the countries where the respective language is important. My list of favorite languages is different, by the way. :)
Tanaqet Why is latin a important language today? Nobody speaks it anymore, so we dont need study it, just if we want to go to Vatican city. If you say japanese ''Anime, and Japanese tourists everywhere'' not everbody likes anime/japan, so why is it important in the world? ''Turkish (In certain cities in Germany, it's the foreign language you'll hear most.)'' you are saying turkish is imporant ONLY in Germany, not in the world. its your opinion ok but latin, japanese and turkish are ridiculous. I agree with english, french, spanish, arabic, russian, german and mandarin. but portuguese and hindi are important too. I am not being arrogant or stupid, i am just saying that. and btw sorry bad english
Rodrigo Kröhling I should've added: "Most important languages for me personally." Of course, you won't ever need Latin if you don't like the literature. The top 5 are languages I've been learning and that turned out to help me out a lot. Sorry for the ambiguity. :)
Wait... So in Brazil there's around 200 million or more that speaks Portuguese not counting Portugal u other African nations that use it. How Arabic get more importance?
1. The middle eastern countries as a whole have much more wealth than Brazil. (Cough cough oil) 2. Arabs are more widespread throughout the world do to immigrants and refugees. 3. Militarily speaking the Middle East has a lot happening: my uncle who was an army officer used to have a T-shirt that said "our business is killing and business is good"
Ilwad Abdallah ya know as an arabic person that you cant just learn arabic. Difference in most dialects arent different than portuuese/spanish difference.
I feel lucky for speaking: 1_ fluent Arabic (عربي) 2_ fluent English 3_ fluent Russian (русский) 4_ my native language, Circassian (Адыгабзэ) 5_ i don't speak German, but I'm definitely gonna learn it after i finish my dental college, to me it sounds the best, Rammstein made me love it, lol
@@alexanderoahz1995 Hey I am French and I am trying since 2months to learne Japanese and when I will 14-15 (I am 13) years old in France (in my school) I can choose Chinese !
+dohc aam bro didn't you hear the numbers English is the 3RE most spoken language in the world ,however I agree that you need to speak English because is the language where you can conduct more deals
It's pretty dependant on what your occupation is! For example I've once heard it's pretty necessary to learn german when you're a doctor or scientist, because of how many publications and research are of german origin and written in german.
chinese people are everywhere... that's why Chinese languge is spoken everywhere.... United Nation has 6 official languges English,Spanish,Mandarin,Arab,Franch and Rusian...
The majority of chinese who live outside of China live in comparatively isolated communities. (I'm talking 1st and 2nd generation not those of Chinese descent like many in America) And THOSE people primarily speak Cantonese anyway so Mandarin wouldnt really be useful. Not hatin here just my 2 cents
I'm from Philippines and I can speak, read and write Tagalog, Spanish and English but I can also understand some Portuguese, Italian (since these 2 are close to Spanish) and a little French.
It surprises me, that you say French isn't dominant language in Morocco. Maybe I'm lucky, but I travelled quite a bit of Morocco and I haven't stumbled upon a single person, who wouldn't speak French. Not even in the small villages along the border with Algeria.
I speak Arabic because I'm arabian but I was born in Italy and I lived there for 12 years so I speack italian. Then, in 1st grade I started learning English in elementary school and in middle school I started learning Spanish and after 2 years I had to move in France so I speak french. I speack 5 languages and I'm pround
Miguel Angel Sosa Rodriguez Mandarin, while is the most spoken language, is only mainly spoken in China. Anywhere else you won’t be able to talk to someone if you only know mandarin unless you’re in a place like china town. That’s just what i think
Sabrina Chan i did a quick search and it said the national language of Singapore is English and Malaysia’s is Malay. You’re probably right but if it’s not the national language, then what is it
If you're in the western hemisphere, you can get by with English and Spanish. Spanish will help you learn French and other romance languages. Portuguese would be a good bonus to know. On the other side of the world, you probably need at least a tiny bit of English as well because its the best 2nd language to know period. German is good for Europe, French is a great language in Europe and comes in handy in Africa. Russian would open up a vast area of landscape to travel. German and Russian are very good for science and usage in internet is high but English still has them beat. In my opinion, French, Russian, and German are more or less tied in importance; it just depends on where you live. Arabic is very useful but has a lot of variety so its not as easy to go from one country to the other. If you don't want to learn Arabic then Persian and Turkish are good. With Arabic, French and English, you can get around almost anywhere in Africa. Mandarin is extremely difficult to learn for foreigners and chances are they already speak a little English or fluently but its good for business and learning any Asian language is very impressive. India has a huge number of languages and many already speak English but Bengali and Urdu/Hindi are great. Malay/Indonesian is also worth mentioning. One thing to keep in mind is that in the regions near countries like Austrialia, Brazil, Mexico, India and in central Africa you will find the highest number of different languages and diversity with more than 50 percent of all known languages.
So, I REALLY want to stress the fact the shades of color matter! So many absolutely ridiculous statements like "They don't speak *insert language* in *insert country*!" Yes, THEY DO. You might have not met them, or they might not be in your region, but indeed a lighter shade of color means the specified language is obviously less spoken in that region/country, if the color becomes pink the number of speakers there is significantly lower. It's not rocket science people. Yes, there are Spanish speakers in the Philippines, yes there are Mandarin speakers in Europe & South Africa. Are those claims really that unbelievable? Thanks to those who watched and enjoyed!
What i find weird is the English speaking map. I've seen statistics showing that 86% of Swedes and Danes, 90% of Dutch, and 56% of Germans speak English. Yet, those countries don't show up at all on the English speaking map. Your other maps seem extremely precise, but your English speaking map ignores the entire European continent, and shortchanges English in much of the rest of the world as well.
Canada speak french language ??. You're wrong !!! I have speak whit a lot of canadian peoples and no one of them knows french language !!. They speak english as first language, in some schools french language is even not teached at all. You have made a big big mistake.
Mandarin may have the most amount of speakers in sheer numbers but if you find yourself lost in Brazil/Mexico/Egypt/Norway/Slovakia etc etc are you more likely to find someone who speaks basic English or basic Mandarin? English obviously, case closed.
Alex Tee Exactly, the importance of Mandarin/Cantonese etc is highly exaggerated, outside of China and select Asian countries and pockets of immigrant communities in western nations the language is irrelevant. Even more so considering 95+% of all speakers are Chinese and no other race of people.
So i don‘t know if i‘m wrong but at my school my teachers thought me that the 3 Most useful languages are English french and spanish and i don‘t think that madarin is very useful exept in China...
Switch #1 and #2 - and you're good. Mandarin is technically spoken by more people, but - WITHOUT QUESTION - English is much more widely spoken around the globe. Your world map of English unfortunately doesn't even come close to showing this.
This vid was pretty good But id add some quite Background music and mby some more motion in Your Video since only speaking for more than 5 Minutes gets kinda monotonea
Arabic has about 450 native speakers not 290, so that should change your list: Source: "Världens 100 största språk 2010" (The World's 100 Largest Languages in 2010), in
Eddie Egypt's population alone is 105 million and they all speak Arabic (in addition to othet languages but Arabic is the main one) . Now, Egypt is 1/4 the arab population & there are other 21 countries. Learning Arabic alphabet would help you in persian and urdu.😀😀😀😊
Fairly speaking, Chinese is not so useful but beautiful. it may be the only languague in the world that uses picture to represent every word. It's natural and unique. the chinese symbols dont show the pronounciation but the meanning. It's the only language that existed for over 3000 years and it still lives. Spain conquered latin america and then the Latinos started to speak spanish, where China was conquered by many other nations like mongolia, but then the Mongolien started th lern Chinese. you see the difference.
+Wei Sheng Hebrew is older, Latin is old too but some would say it doesn't exist outside the Catholic Church or those who learn bits of it for whatever reason..doctors, lawyers, linguists... Greek is also quite old.
+Wei Sheng Am I the only one think memorizing each picture for each word is pain? I love Asian cultures and all. But I feel like learning a picture for each word is too much. I like the aspect of Chinese language itself though. but I am not a big fan of their writing system.
Chinese probably should be #3 or #4. It is only prevalent in 1 country. So the high number of native speakers is irrelevant as they are not influential in countries outside their own.
@Alex Mercer lol not really china is 1.2 billion people producing 12 billion gdp (2017) While latin america is half the population (626 mill) producing almost 10 billion in gdp. So go figure...
If you divide China into dozens of countries, you will not feel that it has little influence. In addition to mainland China, there are more than 100 million Chinese in the world, such as Southeast Asia.
English and Mandarin jostle for first place. Spanish is an undeniable third. Arabic and Russian would jostle for fourth. The French speaking area overlaps with the Arabic speaking area, and most of Canada doesn't speak French. Likewise, the Swahili speaking area overlaps a lot of the English speaking part of Africa. But Indonesian and Portuguese both include big areas and lots of people.
Well French is a much wider language than any other language (except English and Spanish). So no, French is between Spanish and Arabic. Québec speaks 100% French and the rest of Canada still has French as second language.
I would definitely say english is the #1 language to learn. It's used and spoken in everything international. Aswell as basic english known across all of western europe.
I personally feel like German (I live in Germany so I miiight be a little biased) is really useful, at least for me. There are actually quite many high-quality tutorials, UA-camrs etc on UA-cam in German on all kinds of topics. I mostly watch English videos but sometimes there are some German videos I just understand some topics better (not because of the language itself, I'm rather good at English so that's not a problem). English and German (or whatever country you live in) is a powerful combo, I don't think I'll really need more than that :))
+J Aurelio Puente And if you check back your comments, you will learn that Occitan is also spoken in Spain. Er occitan ei parlat ena Val d'Aran, un parçan d'Occitània. :)
I think English will always be the number 1 language in the world based on usefulness. What has to happen in order for Mandarin to be considered almost as useful: establish economic dominance over South East Asia. If China becomes extremely powerful economically then South East Asia might consider using Mandarin due to the proximity of the country. We can sort of see this phenomenon happening in Malaysia and Mongolia (I know it's not part of SO Asia). We are looking at another 500 million + speakers of Mandarin if this happens. Also French is an important language because French speaking Africa has the fastest growing population in the world and Africa has the potential to become the China of the future once the Chinese obtain and demand higher incomes. Another important language I think is Hindustani which is both Urdu and Hindi spoken in India and Pakistan mostly. I mean, despite in between 100 million and 250 million people speaking English in this area, a little under half speak Hindi. And India has potential in becoming a superpower. So in my opinion: #1 English #2 French or Mandarin #3 French or Mandarin #4 Hindustani
Agreed also Chinese/Mandarin is overwhelming focused in China. Unlike English which is pretty much on Every continent in a Big way. Also longer term China is going through a Demographic collapse so I expect these numbers of Mandarin speakers to drop significantly in the coming decades....
Chinese (mandarin or whatever) is useful but it's mainly spoken in China. Even though it has the most speakers, English is useful for business, the internet obviously, any technology.
the whole of Europe speaks English as a second language how come Europe isn't at least shaded in. I think if you shaded in the English speaking regions the same way you did with mandarin. The full impact would be seen

Yeah this is way too assumed and not enough fact. The order in most widely spoken language is English, french, spanish, Mandarin and Arabic. Just because there are a million Chinese doesn't mean it's the widely used language. English is the truest international language due to the fact England took over many countries back in the 1800-1900s. Also, you forgot Hong Kong and South Korea which is taught as a second language for international acceptance in job markets
@Luke Perret It's juste that France was too busy fighting in Europe to defend it against the United States so they decided it would be better to sell it.
imo, i agreed with his list on wc should be included in the top 10... however, this is how i think the 10 languages should be arranged based on importance and influence: 1. English - largest second tongue, most documented, de facto and UN official language, official language of dozens of countries inc. US and UK. 2. Spanish - second most spoken language, UN official language, spoken in Latin America besides Spain 3. French - second most documented, UN official language, widely spoken in EU and Africa, France's influence. 4. Mandarin - most spoken language in the world, UN official, China as the fastest developing nation, Sinophone communities all over the world 5. Arabic - UN official, language of the Arab and Northern african countries, Middle east economic influence. 6. Portuguese - widely spoken in Iberia and S America, Brazil as a fast developing nation and inflience, growing population of Brazil. 7. Japanese - Japan's massive influence in economy, politics, and mass media. 8. German - Germany's large influence in European industry, politics, and media. 9. Russian - UN official, official language of the largest country and nearby former soviet territories, Russia's political influence. 10. Hindi - official language of second most populous country and other nations in South Asia, India's influence in politics and media. 11. Swahili - bonus. Most spoken language in Africa and a lot of African nations are developing.
99% of people in Syria can't speak French, and in other areas too very little French ability, that French map is inaccurate. Also having Mandarin Chinese number 1 is silly, it's not useful as it isn't widespread around the world, again the map is misleading.
+William mohamad - Exactly! If even that! And even in Lebanon the prevalence of English is starting to increase. In reality French is nowhere near as prevalent as what that map describes.
I honestly couldn't care less about how widespread or "usefull" a language is... The only thing that matters to me is that is sounds good to me. If it sounds bad to me...it's off the table.

For me, The Top 10 Useful Languages are: 1. English 2. Chinese (Mandarin) 3. Spanish 4. Japanese 5. German 6. Russian 7. French 8. Arabic 9. Hindi 10. Portuguese
Mandarin (Chinese) in Europe? Not to my knowledge (I'm from Germany... which was also highlighted in the map - you have MUCH higher chances to meet people speaking English / French / Russian in Germany than people speaking mandarin).
Yes! Almost everyone's second language is English here. Even French and Spanish are spoken very often. Many families speak turkish as well, because Germany 'bought' them to work here. Now, Arabic is really important in Europe because of the refugees, but Mandarin Chinese? I know nobody who speaks it tbh
I also live in Lithuania and I really know how useful this language is. I learnt it watching films and a little bit in school and I could say I understand it better than English. But I think that English is more useful
Money is the most spoken and useful language.

chinese is just used by chinese people, its not a global language like english. I'm spanish btw
victorius yes but there's a billion people living in china and lots of them also migrate
I just think that english is the world's language, the language that almost everybody can speak and understand, at least a little bit
english really is a global language, you're right. your initial comment just read as "chinese ain't important, bruh" haha
+Daniel Macias yes, it shows what's most important. THough, I'm from Canada and I speak 3 languages.
naponroy I didn't include Canadians on purpose. The ones I met came from a variety of different ethnic roots. Most knew English, French and whatever their parents spoke.
im agree.

Chinese is just for the Chinese
bro russia is so big so its not all over russia
I don't agree. I think English is, by far, the most important language in the world nowadays and this is not going to change any time soon. And i dare say that the second one is Spanish. Maybe in the future this could change but Chinese is not very important out of China right now.
robert111k yeah, I agree with you.
robert111k+ Ikr, most people can understand English.
robert111k even tho english is an important language it is still the #3 most spoken language in the world. 1st being chinese of course because of china's population and 2nd being spanish because of its vast influence in central and south america
Actually I could see that *starting* to change in the next few years or so and see Chinese becoming more important than English. This is just my opinion of course
+Ximano Fredericks English is the language of money. And everyone loves money.
French may not have a large number of native speakers, but, traveling a lot I met so many people that speak French. It's a language with a very rich culture, and that had a lot of influence in the world. So, it deserves to be there in the top 5.

1-English
2-Spanish
3-French
4-Arabic
5-Mandarin/Chinese
Arabic 🇩🇿💞🌈💝 welcome
Well, I am from China, but I have to admit that maybe English is the No.1 useful language in the world, maybe the population who speak Mandarin is the most, but the area people speak English is the widest.
English or Esperanto.
I agree. English is the most useful language.
Totally agree.
Well, FOR ME, if I want to learn a language I will base it on how many countries speak it, 'cause you know, traveling, haha
Phoenix
And many countries have tourist places and universities specialized in guess what, English, not Chinese
The most useful languages are:
1. English
The reasons are quite obvious
2. Spanish
It is the second most spoken language in the world (by native speakers) and at the same time is distributed in several nations with a growing middle class.
3. French
The birth rate of African member countries of the Francophonie is the great advantage of the French.
5. German
It is the direct adversary of the French in Europe besides being a great advantage in the areas of pharmaceutical and technology. Its weakness is the low birthrate of their natives , so it is easy that German to lose its current relevance in few decades.
I agree with this list
as a Chinese, i agree with you partly. but Chinese is easy to speak, though hard to write. as for the democracy, i guess that is,not a big problem in terms of learning a new language. Maybe because you are from an old democratic country. Any way, warm welcome to China !
***** I agree with you, México might be one of them.
+Alin Banka
Well, perhaps I exaggerate a little when to say that Hispanics will be most in 2050 (USA), but I'm aware that the sons of mix of Hispanics with a person from another culture often declare itself Hispanic.
Look this
www.britishcouncil.org/sites/britishcouncil.uk2/files/languages-for-the-future-report.pdf
+John Doe jaja. I. Will teach my son spanish as second language.haha.
There's no need to criticise other languages -_-
AngelaYama1997 exactly. I mean whether your language is on the list or not it won't change anything!
Funky Nun pls -_- some people here say at other languages "shit language". This is being close minded. Being open minded is to accept other cultures. I didn't say you must not disagree! I said state your opinion in a respectful way and there was no need for being hateful!!! Don't you understand?
King Hans Westerguard Of Arendelle I'm literally face palming.
AngelaYama1997 same.
I'm so glad that Spanish is in the top 3, as it's such an important language with a strong global dominance. I'm also glad you mentioned Portuguese, German and Russian in the end, all very important business languages, like Spanish and the other languages listed previously.
english should be number 1. i live in indonesia and many chinese here cant speak mandarin but they sure can understand and speak english.
maybe you should read into your history on why that is
lmao its bc the british/english colonized half the planet. the biggest empire in history, they settled and exploited various countries and people around the world.
Ash m This is one of the reasons, but also because of a long history of violence against ethnic chinese in Indonesia, which lead to many of them abandoning their cultures and changing their names etc. Look up the May 1998 riots of Indonesia
JandJsShow oh :O wow i did not know about this, ill go look it up thanks
The indonesian chinese people that can't talk mandarin are mostly born at java & the years of 1970-2010 those who are born outside of java mostly still fluent of mandarin & i think the 2010 many schools already started teaching mandarin
Did he just label Ireland as Great Britain?
No, I just labeled that Ireland spoke English.
Yes he did, such an insult to the Irish.
Chris Taino no but like you said something like "over the ocean, we have great britain that speaks english"
Yato/ /Yukine "is too strange"
+Chris Taino you should've just said UK and Ireland.. because Great Britain only refers to England, Wales, and Scotland.. Northern Ireland isn't included.. but still apart of UK..
Why so much hate?
KENNETH WADE I’m guessing it’s because people don’t like seeing their language excluded from a “useful languages” list.
Tattooed Taino They should be more open-minded.
I don't get the hate either. These are facts and not opinions. My first language isn't on this list either, so what?^^

For those that don't understand, this video is Chris's *opinion* , and not the most widely spoken languages.
The most widely spoken languages, in order, are:
Chinese: Over 1,000,000,000 speakers.
Spanish: Over 400,000,000 speakers
English: Over 300,000,000 speakers
Hindi: Over 250,000,000 speakers
Arabic: Over 200,000,000 speakers
French not Hindi
Lil Dia No, not French, Hindi. French wasn't even in the top 10.
Now I'm confused; how can the amount of how much people speak a certain language be an opinion?
isn't that amount meant to be just a fact?

+Tanaqet terrible list dude. seriously..
Rodrigo Kröhling Please elaborate.

It's pretty dependant on what your occupation is! For example I've once heard it's pretty necessary to learn german when you're a doctor or scientist, because of how many publications and research are of german origin and written in german.
chinese people are everywhere... that's why Chinese languge is spoken everywhere.... United Nation has 6 official languges English,Spanish,Mandarin,Arab,Franch and Rusian...
wede momoko but only Chinese speaks it as first language
The majority of chinese who live outside of China live in comparatively isolated communities. (I'm talking 1st and 2nd generation not those of Chinese descent like many in America) And THOSE people primarily speak Cantonese anyway so Mandarin wouldnt really be useful. Not hatin here just my 2 cents
The Us doesn't have an official language though...
I actually study Italian (my mother tongue), English (since 2006-07), French (since 2012-13), Spanish (since 2015) and now, Korean!
sup, fellow kpopper!
Korean is not useful
Korean is pretty useless. Id say portuguese or German instead
I'm Chinese and I think you're kidding.
Neverquiter is youtube allowed in China?
Neverquiter 6 me too but I don't live in China,I'm Malaysian Chinese :)
kb we only need a VPN
@@sibabratabandyopadhyay5249 I think the video author was high when making the video.
I'm from Philippines and I can speak, read and write Tagalog, Spanish and English but I can also understand some Portuguese, Italian (since these 2 are close to Spanish) and a little French.
Are you not able to understand other languages related to Tagalog?
It surprises me, that you say French isn't dominant language in Morocco. Maybe I'm lucky, but I travelled quite a bit of Morocco and I haven't stumbled upon a single person, who wouldn't speak French. Not even in the small villages along the border with Algeria.
I speak Arabic because I'm arabian but I was born in Italy and I lived there for 12 years so I speack italian. Then, in 1st grade I started learning English in elementary school and in middle school I started learning Spanish and after 2 years I had to move in France so I speak french. I speack 5 languages and I'm pround
nice
Congrats, keep going!
Thank you so much😊
Wow thats amazing!
thank you🙌
l am Azerbaijanian and I can speak my mother tongue Turkish Russian English and Mandarin Chinese.I am so lucky
Eric Sam and humble too
English = 1
Spanish = 2
French = 3
Arabic = 4
Mandarin = 5
Alessandro B10 .Nice list. Why is Mandarin so low though?
Miguel Angel Sosa Rodriguez Mandarin, while is the most spoken language, is only mainly spoken in China. Anywhere else you won’t be able to talk to someone if you only know mandarin unless you’re in a place like china town. That’s just what i think
Alessandro B10 Malaysia and Singapore also speaks Chinese
Sabrina Chan i did a quick search and it said the national language of Singapore is English and Malaysia’s is Malay. You’re probably right but if it’s not the national language, then what is it
Alex Mercer I true but I’ve been to Central America and the US is heavily influenced there. I bet it is similar in Europe and parts of Africa and Asia
this list is pretty accurate, my list: English > French > Arabic >Spanish > Mandarine > Japanese >Russian > German.
I bet you are just a simple weeb so you had to put Japanese in front of Russian.
+warningzombie wow my comment offended you ? :D economically wise Japanese wins in alot of industries.
+Shady シャディ I think with the new relations between the US and Iran, persian might be more important than japanese.
+kitkitbobit Iran have along way to go to be a developed industrial country.
***** I said they're going to be more important, not that they're going to be a developed industrial country. Because they ALREADY ARE.
Don't know anyone in Brazil who speaks chinese! NO EVEN ONE PERSON!
haha I was also thinking in India I don't know anyone speaking mandarin..... anyhow there are more places where they speak French and Spanish...
se ta brincando Andréia, que não conhece ninguém no Brasil que não fala mandarim, where do you live garota?

I think you are right, Spanish is the easiest romance language to learn, and useful in so many countries too.
Very informative! Thank you!!!
What does the green mean? That was the only one I couldn't figure out.
+Kim Taura Arabic
What i find weird is the English speaking map. I've seen statistics showing that 86% of Swedes and Danes, 90% of Dutch, and 56% of Germans speak English. Yet, those countries don't show up at all on the English speaking map. Your other maps seem extremely precise, but your English speaking map ignores the entire European continent, and shortchanges English in much of the rest of the world as well.
Canada speak french language ??. You're wrong !!! I have speak whit a lot of canadian peoples and no one of them knows french language !!. They speak english as first language, in some schools french language is even not teached at all.
You have made a big big mistake.
go to Quebec for just one day, please?
My list :
1.) All Languages
Every Language is important and useful in their own way.
I agree. But I could never use more than 8 per cent of my brain for so many languages. I would be crazy or suicidal.
Yes, you are true bro...
Spanish is a very cool language :D
I'm from the Philippines but I don't speak Chinese and little
bit Spanish but English is popular to spoke our language even foreign tourist
Switch #1 and #2 - and you're good. Mandarin is technically spoken by more people, but - WITHOUT QUESTION - English is much more widely spoken around the globe. Your world map of English unfortunately doesn't even come close to showing this.
seems ur mind and worldview still stay in the last century. Everything that made by chinese will grow in a incredibly speed.
I think he's right to be honest. Most people speak English and not chinese
+Donbarzini that is now. within twenty years China will dominate... mostly everything business. I hope you live to regret it.
Zenith Rendezvous Calm down wtf did I do to you.
This vid was pretty good But id add some quite Background music and mby some more motion in Your Video since only speaking for more than 5 Minutes gets kinda monotonea
Arabic has about 450 native speakers not 290, so that should change your list:
Source: "Världens 100 största språk 2010" (The World's 100 Largest Languages in 2010), in
Shut up
IFKTK A
Yes.you are right.
yep
IFKTK A 450? Hahahaha are u kidding me? ARABIC NOWADAYS IS LESS THAN PORTUGUESE.
ARABIC IS 220 MEANWHILE PORTUGUESE IS ALMOST 240 MILLIONS 😘
Eddie
Egypt's population alone is 105 million and they all speak Arabic (in addition to othet languages but Arabic is the main one) .
Lol
+Wei Sheng Hebrew language existed more than 3500 years... and still exist !!!!
+Wei Sheng Hebrew is older, Latin is old too but some would say it doesn't exist outside the Catholic Church or those who learn bits of it for whatever reason..doctors, lawyers, linguists... Greek is also quite old.
Ryan Privee yeah, Hebrew is oldest.
+Wei Sheng Am I the only one think memorizing each picture for each word is pain? I love Asian cultures and all. But I feel like learning a picture for each word is too much. I like the aspect of Chinese language itself though. but I am not a big fan of their writing system.
what the fuck ?? chinese is india . In my entire life i didnt see indian speaking chinese...
Why i died
Why I am done 😂😂😂😂
Akhi Go learn English
Akhi I am also an Indian. I too never saw Indian speaking Chinese.
Shumbath kumar it's Chinese speaking Chinese fat boy
Chinese probably should be #3 or #4. It is only prevalent in 1 country. So the high number of native speakers is irrelevant as they are not influential in countries outside their own.
@Alex Mercer lol not really china is 1.2 billion people producing 12 billion gdp (2017)
While latin america is half the population (626 mill) producing almost 10 billion in gdp.
So go figure...
@Alex Mercer Roasted.
Yes, this video is not accurate.
You're right
English will always be the global/international language. Btw, I'm from the Philippines and my native language is Tagalog.
The ranking should be:
1. English
2. Spanish
3. Chinese
4. Arabic
5. French
English
Spanish
French
Etc
Chinese is only spoken in China and Singapur. Even Indonesia has forbidden to learn or speak it.
Your biased.
Spanish have more natives speaker than English it would be in the second place and English in the third
Ramiro Espinosa but it's supposed to be a top of the most "important" languages in the entire planet.
Ramiro Espinosa Spanish ,only in Latin America and Spain it's a regional language , not a global language.
Not Spanish only English
Today I learnt that Spanish is spoken in Spain...
sad
Zekyo It was sarcasm...
+J Aurelio Puente And if you check back your comments, you will learn that Occitan is also spoken in Spain.
Er occitan ei parlat ena Val d'Aran, un parçan d'Occitània. :)
+J Aurelio P Which Spanish are you talking about? Castillian (castellano), Galician (gallego), Catalan (catalán) or Basque (vasco)?
Justin Wei Non cau pas desbrembar era lengua occitana d'era Val d'Aran. :P
(Also Occitan spoken in Aran Valley)
لغتي العربية ما أروعك و أحلاك رغم حقد البعض عليك لكنك تبقين سيدة اللغات
الله سبحانه وتعالى لم ينزل القرآن الا بهذه اللغة وهذا يعني انها الأفضل 👍
somalia
Max JaCk Fuck you
+Hassan Xtra ايش قال ؟
cara, sua língua é muito facil
My family is a group of native Spanish speakers. Some people in my family were born in Mexico.
So in my opinion:
#1 English
#2 French or Mandarin
#3 French or Mandarin
#4 Hindustani
Agreed also Chinese/Mandarin is overwhelming focused in China. Unlike English which is pretty much on Every continent in a Big way. Also longer term China is going through a Demographic collapse so I expect these numbers of Mandarin speakers to drop significantly in the coming decades....
Chinese more useful than English? Come on.
haha,Chinese maybe more useful in East Asia. But in worldwide, English must be the first choice.
Apparently, you are living in an English world. Unfortunately, every language just is a corner of the world.
+Steve Song yes

Yeah this is way too assumed and not enough fact. The order in most widely spoken language is English, french, spanish, Mandarin and Arabic. Just because there are a million Chinese doesn't mean it's the widely used language. English is the truest international language due to the fact England took over many countries back in the 1800-1900s. Also, you forgot Hong Kong and South Korea which is taught as a second language for international acceptance in job markets
My friend, Arabic has +600 million speakers.
Yea I agree👌🏽
+Yousef Al-A'ssaf wtf no? are you high? i think you don`t know that much about your language..
It's actually +420 million (which is obviously the coolest number ever)
Yusef Mohammed So you do drugs?....
+reci lol no
There are actually French speakers all up and down the Mississippi. In St Louis, anything bilingual will be in English and French. No Spanish.
@Luke Perret It's juste that France was too busy fighting in Europe to defend it against the United States so they decided it would be better to sell it.
Ok, I have officially decided to take on the massive challenge of learning Arabic.
It is weird af because it's written right to left
imo, i agreed with his list on wc should be included in the top 10... however, this is how i think the 10 languages should be arranged based on importance and influence:
1. English - largest second tongue, most documented, de facto and UN official language, official language of dozens of countries inc. US and UK.
2. Spanish - second most spoken language, UN official language, spoken in Latin America besides Spain
3. French - second most documented, UN official language, widely spoken in EU and Africa, France's influence.
4. Mandarin - most spoken language in the world, UN official, China as the fastest developing nation, Sinophone communities all over the world
English is more used than French in Syria lol. Lebanon uses French a lot
+William mohamad - Exactly! If even that! And even in Lebanon the prevalence of English is starting to increase. In reality French is nowhere near as prevalent as what that map describes.
French is not useful
. Anyone educated that lives in a nation colonized by France speaks french. Hands down 9/10 times.
English should be #1
As a South African I hear Mandarin on a daily basis 👍
1:46 umm how about the province of Quebec and part of the surrounding provinces
Il faut avoir un pays pour être reconnu sinon on constate que les gens s'en foutent
MashaAllah I know Bangla,English,Hindi,Urdu now started learning Arabic
I honestly couldn't care less about how widespread or "usefull" a language is... The only thing that matters to me is that is sounds good to me. If it sounds bad to me...it's off the table.
Hablarlo a duras penas.
For me, The Top 10 Useful Languages are:
1. English
2. Chinese (Mandarin)
3. Spanish
4. Japanese
5. German
6. Russian
7. French
8. Arabic
9. Hindi
10. Portuguese
Mandarin (Chinese) in Europe? Not to my knowledge (I'm from Germany... which was also highlighted in the map - you have MUCH higher chances to meet people speaking English / French / Russian in Germany than people speaking mandarin).
+Reckless Rhino I agree
Yes! Almost everyone's second language is English here. Even French and Spanish are spoken very often. Many families speak turkish as well, because Germany 'bought' them to work here. Now, Arabic is really important in Europe because of the refugees, but Mandarin Chinese? I know nobody who speaks it tbh
Yep
+Martin Thoma I am German and I speak English natively. Mandarin has no weight on us.
Ῥ§yçhic™ I'm German, too^^
где русский?? :"(
I live in Lithuania not Russia, but there are many people who speak Russian. You are right.
at least Russian was an honorable mention
I also live in Lithuania and I really know how useful this language is. I learnt it watching films and a little bit in school and I could say I understand it better than English. But I think that English is more useful
:'(

Ah I see what you did there :3 haha
It would be but unfortunately americans understand sarcasm or irony
