  • Gear Review | While I am longtime Garmin Zumo XT user, I cannot say I am a PLEASED Garmin user. I had an opportunity to take a look at the Carpuride W702 that Greg Simpson over at The Bearded Grump. When Carpuride asked to send me a unit, I asked to try the W502, as my bars are FULL and I did not want a larger unit. The units are functionally identical, only the screen size is different.- Frank

Thanks of the great review Frank! I ordered the 702 Carpuride and used it for a couple rides. I removed it and went back to just using my iPhone and Quadlock Wireless charger. The Carpuride is probably right for someone just not me! My phone seemed to overheat when locked away in my tank bag and charging at the same time. I've never had this issue with my phone mounted.
You mentioned in your video that your gloves don't work for touch on your phone. I made a video a few years ago about the GloveTact's they are dirt cheap and the more they get wore the better they work. Best $12 motorcycle accessory guaranteed!

I think the thing that bugged me the most about CarPlay is that there is no MyQ app for CarPlay! How has this been overlooked! I don't know when everyone else opens and closes the garage door. But I do when I'm planning to pull in or out of my garage with my Truck or bike! hahahaha. Digging my phone out of my pocket or tank bag unlocking it to open my garage door I didn't care for going down the road on the bike and I also didn't like sitting at the garage door doing the same. Just having my phone mounted is so much easier to just touch the big open button on the dash. I was so excited to use this Carpuride but it just didn't work for me the way I thought it would.

It may well have a sensor to adjust the screen brightness based on the ambient light. Typically I find that they are most "dim" perceptually in the middle light levels.

I just got one … if you go into settings on the unit (appearance)there is a dark setting could be on that… by default when I switched to light… it was super bright 😊

Very complete review, and not a bad price on the unit. Here in the SW I have had phones overheat and shut down when I really need them to work, so I use a GPS more often. Interested to see if heat will affect the Carpuride unit.

Hello Dave, Greg has been using one for a few months, in toasty, and humid South Carolina. That's a fair indication that they are legit weather resistant if not proof! Mines being used in the 90s and higb humidity for the past few weeks. - Frank

@@OneOldManRiding I concur! I've been using the W702 for a while in the hot and humid NC weather, also in the rain and in the dust on Jeep trails all day, no issues with these or vibrations.
My phone is safely in my pocket (I'd recommend keeping the phone on your person, not in a tank bag nor top case - that way you have a way to call for help or communicate if you crash and can't get up, like pinned under the bike, for example) and if the Carpuride does take a ding, it's a lot cheaper than my phone to replace.
Best thing I've added for my aging eyes.
As for the unit powering down, the ideal way of connecting it is to an accessory plug or the battery. Also helps make the wiring fully waterproof.

Thanks, Frank, for the review. This device could be helpful on my DR650 but appears to be functionally the same as the Suzuki My Spin app on my GSX-S1000. I do like having a GPS connection that is not dependent on cell phone connectivity as is the case with the Garmin.. The hardware does look good.

Hello Happycamper, I hope you enjoy using it, and thank you VERY much! Been using mine for several weeks now, and it's been rock solid. I just need to stop thinking do I leave it on the bars, or mount it higher... - Frank

I had issues pairing my iPhone, A Packtalk Bold and a 'Tenbaba' display (the same thing)...if you set everything just right, I could get music to my ears...but so many times it just failed to all connect and act right.

I want a dedicated BMW Garmin. My Google maps on phone does not respond very well. Google maps has gotten so bad lately 😕

Have you tried connecting it into your battery directly? I know that may seem to be a hard decision seeing as how that bike gave such a problem with the last battery replacement. I would be a little on edge as well to even thunk about hooking it right into that battery. 😅

Hello Zac, I have a usb plug connected to the battery with an on / off switch. And now it's connected to that. If I ever open the headlight again, I will connect it to thr switched power in there. - Frank

Hello Patrick, the device detaches easily from the hard mount to a battery. I am going to buy a second cable for my other bike, so I can move it easily. No need for two when it is so small. - Frank
