- Hello! The following is a cut down and more concise mod of the stream I held on the 17th of September ranking Omori ships! If you don't want to sit through an hour worth of scuff and "ummmmm" this is for you HAHA

Gonna take a moment here to say this. I'm a Suntan shipper, and I myself can say that Suntan is not as "healthy" as it is made out to be. It kinda has the same vibe as Sunflower , because both characters are dealing with trauma of the accident, and while Kel doesn't quite have it bad as Basil in that regard, he still is going through shit, especially shit that doesn't involve the accident. He has to deal with Mari's death, plus living in Hero's shadow, feeling incompetent constantly, having smiling depression and not being able to tell people how he really feels for fear of being a burden, anxiety over being a big brother, etc.
Basically what I'm trying to say that Sunny and Kel would help each other a lot. I don't agree with the whole Kel-being-free-therapy thing, but I do believe he would be an amazing shoulder for Sunny to cry on, plus will protect him and make sure he stays healthy, and in return Sunny will provide Kel with someone to vent to when he's feeling upset and a healthy way to release his bottled emotions. They are healthy in this way, not because their ship has no problems or that they will cruise through life shit-free, but because I believe that no matter what happens, they will help each other through it, allow each other to cry in a safe space, and make it out okay in the end.
That is why I ship Suntan. I'm curious to know your thoughts about this? (If you ever actually see this ...)
That's a fair and valid interpretation! Thanks for sharing. Like I said in the video, anything that I ranked low wasn't because it was something terrible. It just didn't scratch the itch in my brain for interesting relationships dynamics like pairings above. I'm glad that the ship has brought you so much happiness. I actually kinda ship Sunflower too, they are pretty cute together, but I have trouble with Basil because I kinda ship him with Sunny, Kel, and Aubrey (although Aubrey the most) at the same time, but like I said I ship Suntan, and I also ship Cotton Candy, so Basil's kinda just left alone ... also, I don't headcanon him as gay, I headcanon him as (get ready for it) a pan-demiromantic asexual. Which ... makes it more difficult. Haha, poor Basil ... But I actually really like Sunflower, I just like Suntan more, but everyone's interpretation of these ships are different so everyone's opinion is valid as long as they're respectful. (Except for the Omori/Sunny shippers and the Hero/Sunny shippers ...)

I kinda liked Suntan for the sort of "black cat golden retriever" dynamic it could bring but then it just.... immediately got stale for me, like there's pretty good potential for interactions between sunny and kel that aren't "kel becomes Sunny's unofficial therapist" but they... aren't utilised much (plus I'm... not too fond of that scenario anyway because for the love of god Kel already has so much sh*t bottled that isn't discussed in a fair bit of fan content surrounding him, like he's kinda just been flanderized for a while to have a lot less depth than he did in the game) so while Suntan is pretty "wholesome", it just feels kinda repetitive.
I didnt even know cactiflower was a ship for a while because most of the ships that got attention in the fandom for a while were Sunny X ___ so when i found out it was a thing i just latched onto it like a f*cking deer tick💀
Honestly I'm glad I ain't the only one that think a lot of the time suntan shippers they can start depicting kel and a at home therapist for sunny and diminish the trauma and problems he's characterise to have for the sake of a "wholesome" ship
I don't mind suntan actually, and I actually find the dynamic cute as well but I don't get the take that the ship has to be wholesome and both characters can't be traumatised and stay together and be eachothers pillar of support rather than solely one helping the other

Your take on sunburn is how I feel about sunflower. I just feel like it would be one-sided, where Basil likes Sunny but Sunny just thinks of him as a really close friend. Like don’t get me wrong- I love sunflower. But I just feel like it would be more likely to be one-sided. I feel like there’s no world where Basil didn’t have a crush on Sunny at some point, and the sunburn memory makes me think that it would be Basil’s main moment of realization that the feelings aren’t returned. Idk and I know that the sunflower shippers are coming after me but like- it’s still one-sided in my mind.
Also cactiflower is my favorite ship- there’s just something about those two that makes my brain happy =D
Sunny and Basil are stated through Basil's exposition to be close friends as children. There are small environmental clues that hint at some level of comfortableness and reciprocation from Sunny. For example, the Sprout Mole Villages imply that Sunny knows how to cook tofu (Basil's favorite food) despite it being his least favorite food (its the only joke healing item besides rotten milk). He remembers the recipe for Basil's birthday cake. Basil's house is the only RW mirror that Sunny looks and his mattress is the only one Sunny thinks is as comfortable as his own, which could imply that he often had sleepovers at Basil's house. There are also a lot of little environmental and gameplay details in Headspace that can be read as general bi-coding. But without direct exposition or a cutscene, we don't know for sure what present-day Sunny's exact feelings towards RW Basil are. The nareative shows that thry are trauma triggers fir eachother, and BlackSpace implies that Sunny has some amount of unprocessed resentment towards Basil, yet he still cares enough to rush to his bedroom to stop Basil from commiting suicide

The way you described Cactiflower is exactly why I have brainrot for it; it’s a way to have two characters from the group to properly interact between Mari’s death and the rw segments of the game. Kel and Aubrey would fight and Aubrey would either ignore or pick on Basil, so trying to get them to get along is hard. This is why I like Kel and Basil so much, along with the similarities between their two characters. Both of them struggle with hiding their feelings behind positivity. They avoid relying on others. They don’t want to think about the past, but are constantly reminded of it through Aubrey. They’re both close to Sunny, but in different ways, but both equally important to the plot. I prefer Cactiflower over Sunny/Kel/Basil because while there’s assumptions that can be made between the past and present in the game, really anything could have happened between them, which is where I like writing and thinking about them the most.
My own headcanons affect how I think about this period, but I like to think about Basil and Kel finally talking again about a year after the accident right around when Hero starts to feel better about things and getting overly focused with school, leaving Kel to feel more isolated. I additionally make his parents more distant to add onto the angst factor as well, so Kel feels pressured to reach out to Basil for comfort and familiarity. Kel is a very sociable and somewhat oblivious person, but losing his friend group would make it hard to move on to complete strangers immediately. Basil, on the other hand, is generally just really scared about things. He doesn’t want the truth to come out, and how Omori talks to Sunny during their fight, is how I imagine Basil is with himself. He doesn’t quite want to die because he still holds onto hope of Sunny coming back and things being fixed again, so he’s very complacent and just lets Kel do what he wants with him (not in a bad/manipulative way). He just isn’t very interested in him initially and mostly hangs out with him to get Aubrey off his back, but overtime, Basil warms up to him, having his initial role with Sunny swap; Basil used to vent and talk to Sunny, but with his new guilt, he doesn’t want to accidentally let anything slip, so he lets Kel get out whatever he needs to. I like the idea of them becoming codependent after enough time, with Kel needing emotional comfort and Basil needing physical comfort. Because of the story, I imagine Kel would move on eventually, but with how he responds to Basil saying “when we used to be friends”, saying “we’re still friends”, he still cares about him. I don’t know if they’d work longer term, but their personalities are similar and they’re both very sweet, which can be really cute.
I really really like sunflower in theory because of how close Sunny and Basil were, but it is so hard to write them being together due to how quiet Sunny is. When they’re younger, it works better, because Basil is more sociable despite being a bit anxious, but after their fight and Mari’s death, it’s shown he’s more inhibited and depressed for obvious reasons. Basil gives a vibe of being very emotional, but hiding a lot of his feelings, similar to Sunny, shown by him having three tiers of emotion in the console version. After the good ending I’m sure they’d become more open to each other, which is where my enjoyment of sunflower is. It’s just with all the other reasons why I like cactiflower more. Kel and Basil have very different and strong interests and contrast each other while having similarities which makes them a lot more interesting to me. It’s easy to imagine Kel embarrassing Basil, or having the opposite where Basil is anxious and Kel speaks up for him. I agree with you that I like the possible toxicity of sunflower, but while you say cactiflower is the better version of suntan, I think cactiflower is the better version of sunflower.
With all this being said I had the dominating cactiflower fanfic for like a year so I’m really biased lmao

This like perfectly describes why Cactiflower is like my favorite Omori ship. Just thinking about their interactions, and how well they both would work together just makes my day. After all, A lot could've happened between the 4 year gap of The Incident and The Events of Omori.
(Along with some other tertiary elements for me, like how Kel would also always want Basil to take pictures of him aswell, and took a picture with his camera that one time Basil went to the bathroom. The photo where Basil was admiring Kel by saying he wished he was as confident as him. The part during Three Days left where Kel tells Basil that they will always be friends. It's shit like that just melts my brain 😊.)
To me I see sunflower as a comfort and very cute ship if you can see it. Hero and Mari a yes. It's cannon by now bc we all know the reason.
No need to say. But with sunflower too with them being partners I can see if something going wrong for one of them the other would try in any way possible to calm down the other partner. Which would be adorable to see.

As a Sunburn junkie i honestly find the ship much better if you leave out all the dumb steriotypes like the emoboy and punk girl thing because they’re way more than just those things, i like to see them actually grow up an mature before getting into a relationship, I seriously doubt any relationship would work out straight after the good ending so that time to mature and heal will be had.
I just find Sunburn less obnoxious than the others because of how subtle their interactions were, we have some moments on the swings that Sunny no doubt treasures as well and Aubrey always wanting Sunny to take things slow and reflect on himself (as stated in the Omocat interview in the artbook.)
I also look at what they did in game, both making a mistake in a spur of the moment action that they immediately regret (Sunny pushing Mari and Aubrey pushing Basil). Something about being on the same boat makes me like the idea of the consoling each other and relating to each other in a way as well as them trying to overcome that part of themselves together and stuff, it makes the relationship feel rewarding after pushing through everything the game throws at them.
I never really cared about the quirky other ships or going hard on Aubrey’s Punk aesthetic or Sunny’s emo aesthetic because I want my ship to have actual substance, a ship where they’re actual people instead of playing out a specific stereotype couple.
Overall Sunburn is one I feel needs that extra effort other than hinging entirely on one aspect like some of these other ships.

I think this is interesting since while I’m not the hugest sunburn shipper (I prefer other ships) I do like cute ship comics or stories about them whether the stories flesh them out or it’s just cute moments between them based off how they act. I kinda like both simplistic and in depth romance stories

@@dashw I do think sunburn is a neat ship but I highly doubt it has to do with their sexuality. Most people in the community ship hero and mari after all so I think the issue lies in certain people not liking Aubrey. For me at least I’ve seen a lot of people dislike Aubrey as a character due to her behavior in the game which causes others to not ship her with other characters. As for the sunflower thing I do agree that basil is a bit too obsessed but I don’t think people who ship them see all his behaviors as healthy as I’ve noticed some ship stories usually take place after Sunny moves and they get better as people. And while basil had a habit to think Sunny could do no wrong they still clearly cared about each other a lot which is why I think that’s why people mainly shipped the two, a long with them having a lot of history together (like basil likes to talk to him when he needs a listening ear and Sunny being happy to hear him out). To be honest all the ships in Omori aren’t 100% healthy (other than hero and mari) but I don’t think that deters it from being a bad ship all couples have their own flaws but it’s not like those flaws can’t be dealt with
Never have I found a take I disagreed with more based than when you threw suntan directly into "boring". Like damn you just spit in my cereal with such confidence I have no choice but to respect it.

I appreciate your feelings on sunflower, I think it's the one that gets the best fan content because of that potential! I never really considered using Stranger in the ships, but I can see exactly what you mean.
On behalf of the kim fandom i accept your criticism, honestly her fanon version is what i tend to vibe with because canon does kind of give us nothing... it also doesn't really give us a resolution or insight into any of her flaws so a lot of people seem to dislike her because of that. i totally get it.
Heromari I like for the exact reasons you say. They're a perfect couple if you know very very very little about the game, but their unfortunate circumstances only reveal how much they need each other, until... yeah. It's really interesting!

Kelbrey is so cute! The way their bickering was always present even when they were all besties and when it comes back it means they're comfortable around each other again and oo there's so much cool stuff that can go on with that i LOVE

i think i disagree on cactiflower because to me it seemed like kel and basil interacted the least. i think they were never too close and imo they never really understood each other. i think both of them were always much closer to sunny and aubrey than to each other tbh

So like Nerdy said, People view suntan as free therapy, even though Kel has gone through the same shit and isn't able to provide the mental support Sunny needs and I feel like Sunny would end up relying on Kel, bringing him down and causing him to feel responsible about his emotions, and that's just not fun, as someone who's been in that kind of relationship.

first of all I have to say it: as a certified autistic person I think Bowen and Daphne are autistic, but they're both in a town that accommodates them well enough that they can both pass as relatively neurotypical. my literal only evidence is that they're both very stone-faced in their fight even when they become clinically depressed, and that Bowen only talks in weird sounds that Daphne interprets. it's the Phineas and Ferb sibling dynamic y'know
anyway I think that Sunny befriending Bowen and Daphne is S tier and SLEPT ON, really weird and bad as a romantic ship but like??? the bread twins are slowly growing distant from their younger sibling whom they adore and Sunny lost his older sister whom he adored, and he seems perfectly willing to play hide and seek with them, I think that the bread twins should adopt him as their surrogate younger sibling and play hide and seek with him every weekend.
I like Kel/Maverick more than Hero/Bowen b/c they actually have a lot of similarities -- both of them are younger siblings with at least 1 older sibling who's more accomplished in the eyes of their parents and are both kinda silly weirdos. also they at least have an established dynamic of being goofy over-the-top one-sided rivals which is a really funny foundation to a pairing
Bowen/Hero meanwhile is more interesting to me than Daphne/Hero b/c you have Hero grappling w/ his sudden bisexual crisis, I personally h/c Hero as trans so I think the realization that he's bi is less of a world-shaking thing and more of a realization that now, he has one more thing that makes him unsafe in the wider world outside of his hometown. He knows already that anyone who isn't 100% Cis And Straight is treated like shit, and if he wants to date a guy and also not be in a community with like 10 families in it forever, he's gonna face some shit that he wouldn't otherwise. I also think they have a lot of things in common, mainly both being the overaccomplished older sibling, but there's some interesting strengths/weaknesses there too -- Bowen is growing apart from his younger sibling while Hero is very close with his, and Hero is struggling to cope with the burden of parental expectations VS what HE wants to do while Bowen seems to have largely made peace with it.
Obviously Bowen and Daphne are basically non-characters and the Maverick is barely a step up but I really like projecting onto them, I think your reasoning for not liking them is completely valid and actually super true I just have a sickness in the brain

Meh, I don’t mind the boring looking ships 😏🤷♂️. After all the sad stuff in the game, it wouldn’t hurt to have some mild stuff to offset the sadness and trauma. Like how all the simple interactions between the characters suddenly feel like a miracle compared to all the depression in Sunny’s head.
And let’s face it, people only ship Kim with Aubrey and Basil with Sunny or Kel mainly because of how gay they look 😂. Consider yourself lucky that Honeysuckle (Basil✖️Kim) is pretty obscure in the fandom.

I adore Suntan but, honestly, go off. It's hard to find anything that isn't just 'Kel being Sunny's therapist' which is super boring to me. Make them both complex characters in their own right! I don't mind some fluffiness here and there but sometimes you just need some drama to spice it up.
But honestly, polycule ships? We need more of it. I'm a sucker for Sunburntanflower, because I think occasionally that Sunny has so much bi energy that he manages to pull three of his friends. He deserves it though.
Kel and Basil weirdly compliment eachother as far as their relationships to Sunny goes. They compliment him in opposite but fitting ways. Omocat has stated that Kel "was made for Sunny" while Basil is visibly queer-coded and is implied to have had a childhood crushon Sunny (turned obsessive/toxic by trauma).
Something that Kel has over everyone else in the friend group (including Basil) is that he was the only one who got Sunny to leave his house. He literally and metaphorically saved Sunny's life.
The Hikikomori implies that Basil tried multiple times to reach out to Sunny but he eventually gave up. (Otherwise he would have known about the For Sale sign.) Kel is stated to have regularly called and knocked on Sunny's door for almost 4 years. The surprise and relief when Sunny actually answers is very telling of how vulnerable Kel was being, risking rejection to spend time with his best friend.
Basil and Kel are both able to get Sunny out of his comfort zone but at different paces. Sunny generally prefers when others take the lead. Kel is able to get Sunny outside exploring Faraway Town in a matter of hours/days. Basil is more subtle, introducing Sunny to new books and interests but it takes a while for him to reciprocate.
Kel and Basil are both protective in different ways. Basil protects Sunny by being his fall-guy/secret keeper. Kel protects him physically even if it means running into danger, like taking away the knife or distracting/taking hits for Sunny in the Aubrey and Hooligan fights.
While Basil and Sunny are implied to have had a close friendship before the incident, and Basil is coded as having a puppy crush, Basil and Sunny are now trauma triggers for eachother. The second half of BlackSpace is Sunny/Omori brutally killing Basil in an attempt to supress the Truth. These are Sunny's raw, messy, unfiltered thoughts. It is not unreasonable to infer that Sunny has some degree of unprocessed anger/mixed feelings towards Basil for hanging Mari and, in hindsight, making the incident even worse.
Kel has no direct ties to the Incident beyond Sunny's guilt over abandoning and lying to him. Sunny needed a close and persistant friend that wasn't tied to the incident to actually take the first steps towards healing. Basil/Stranger is Sunny's guide in Headspace to confronting the truth, Kel is Sunny's guide in the physical world to reconnecting with reality and his old friends.
The fact that there's a wikipage for "sunmari" is absolutely insane to me. Some monsters are actually shipping a brother with a sister whom he pushed down the stairs, broke her neck and hung her from the backyard tree.
I’m not saying I ship it, but sometimes people like a toxic dynamic that reframes a character. Hands is a fanfic that covers this exactly.
i have a hot take i feel many people wont like but i dont think Kelbrey works and i think Sunburn actually does work. ill start off why would Aubrey choose to be with someone she argues with all the time as a partner when she comes from a dysfunctional home where she grew up seeing that stress. While it is cute in some media but thats the thing its a trope and Kel kinda destroys that trope because he really doenst seem to be into Aubrey very much. While he did call her cute sure but the squiggly dialogue is always meant sarcastically in omori i dont think he meant it maliciously but i think it was more of Kel trying to be funny and compliment her and it seems calling each other cute is normal in this friend group same with mines I call many of my friends cute platonically as well. okay next sunburn isnt actually very overly straight as it seems people just ship it wrong Aubrey doesnt actually need to change or lose her personality at all thats why Sunny likes her. Sunny is very reserved most of the time and Aubrey is very strong willed but she doesnt really know how to communicate her feelings very well Sunny even says she was hard to understand She came to Sunny to talk to him about issues she was dealing with and when everyone else was busy she could always count on Sunny to make time for her similarly to why i also enjoy Sunflower i love people talking it out with each other thats what makes things work. Sunny can be seen hiding behind Aubrey in the real world tags which i always interpreted as him feeling safe around the person same way he hides behind hero but Aubrey's tags show her being rough with Hero and especially Kel but very gentle with Sunny showing she cares about him in a much different light than the rest of her friends they feel secure in each other because they compliment each other Sunny doesnt express himself much Aubrey doesnt communicate much but seeks comfort and Sunny IS that comfort. Sunny's quiet personality and him being a good listener is what makes this such a cute ship imo and why it works for me you dont have to agree but this is my personal interpretation. I dont think its as one sided as some people think and i dont think its too straight or boring because it reverses typical gender architypes fount in a lot of media which is what i find Kelbrey to be a trope which wouldnt really be enjoyable for Aubrey seeing as how she grew up.

Cactiflower is in Absolute brain rot for me. I just find the opposite personality's of shy / sensitive and energetic / social so cute! Kel's so goofy, loud and hyper all the time, and then you just have Basil being calm, quiet and tired all the time. They are completely opposites and it just, i love it. I just love this ship so much lol
Also yeah, Suntan is so boring and overrated to me too. There is way to much content for it, and to me it just feels like a worse version of Cactiflower.

Then in headspace Aubrey seems pretty fond of Omori, I haven’t seen many headspace clips for a while so I kinda forgot but in this video called Omori boy demo (basically Omori but it’s Omori boy, the older version) Aubrey acts as if she has a crush on Omori. I can’t remember fully but in current headspace I think it’s liek that too? Sunny def had a crush on her and when dreaming tried to make that a reality form my guess. It also seemed past Aubrey was trying to impress sunny, so there it goes. Pre trauma sunburn was cute, but Aubrey changed to much. Even after I don’t think she’d fully forgive sunny or basil, so it wouldn’t be possible. (She would give them a second chance though.) kinda sad about that though. I think Hero x a bread twin can be neat. There's their shared love of baking, of course. Hero actually worked at the bakery when he was 15 as well, to help save up for Sunny's violin, so they probably worked together too. There's also, of course, the heavy parental expectations as well. Mari had this too, so she understood Hero - and she also knew exactly how to push his buttons to get him to come out of Safe Mode where he just acts how everyone wants him to be, and get him to be himself. She was weird and gross and perfect for him. It'd be hard for either of the bread twins to live up to this, but maybe they could try a different approach.
For Daphne & Mari (Breadbasket)... once again, they would've met when Mari worked at the bakery. Honestly thinking about it more, just a better version of the previous one. Mari would be able to do the same thing she did with Hero with Mari.

I'm gonna get looks for this because only like 3 people know this is even a pair, but my favorite little ship that's not with the main guys is Letter room Aubrey and Stranger, extra bonus points if it has Shattered Omori.
I don't have a reason honestly, they never really interact, but think about it. Shattered Omori wants people, specifically Sunny, who he seems to be drawn towards. Stranger is probably lonely, constantly trying to get Sunny to listen and getting ignored every time. Letter room Aubrey is obsessed over Sunny, who made her to like him because of a silly little childhood crush that's since faded. I think the fact that they're 3 lonely little guys trying to get to the one person who stays away from them is something they can share, and be there for eachother through, just makes it my personal comfort ship. United not through trauma, but being forgotten. Makes me sad how little people talk about the pairing. Shutterbomb is kinda popular in a very niche way, but specifically this one with Shattered Omori is very underrated. Black Space Burnt Sunflower!! 3 very underrated characters loving each other in a very underrated ship.

As a hardcore Sunburn shipper who also reads a bit of Omori fanfiction, I must say that there are (almost) no bad/boring ships, only bad/boring writers. I never cared for Sunflower until I read a good fic with it.
As a sunburn shipper i fully agree that interpretation of the ship is boring and doesnt feel right with the characters, seeing them as a couple feels very off to me most of the time and often times aubreys charecter is diluted/changed.
The version i personally ship is sunny having a crush on aubrey and aubrey alsk has a crush but just a very small one. Sunny cant confess because of shyness and feeling like someone like aubrey would never love him that way, and aubrey cant confess because she cant admit to herself + sunny that she likes him because shes afraid of being rejected and left behind. In this version its alot more fun to imagine the messiness of it all and make up scenarios. Though this is just my interpretation :]
