After caring for my mother fulltime for 3 and a half years till I turned 50 last November I feel shattered and exhausted physically and emotionally. After a couple of months off finalising her affairs and taking a break ,I have started looking online. It is obvious to me now at nearly 52, if I am to get employed, it is going to have to be self-employed. I worked in the moving business for 20 years before looking after my mother. Much too heavy work for my age now! God Bless and Good Luck!
Yes, for many 50-somethings self employment is their best option to live a happy, comfortable life, long-term. To be successful as an entrepreneur it takes self-discipline, resilience, adaptability, a strong work ethic and networking skills. If you've got those traits, or can develop them, you can be successful. Got for it, please!
Curious how anyone managed the situation where you could not take any, even a temporary, dip in income to start over. My household relies on my income to keep the lights on, so any dip is not an option.
Hi Brett! I apologize for getting back to you so late. What you may have to do to compensate for a dip in income is to temporarily work a part-time job or two. I worked multiply part-time jobs so I could pay my bills when I decided to quit my dead-end, low paying job to start my first business. It was a tough, stressful period in my life but I was determined to have a better life.
