Well Davis always had all the control especially over the roster and the draft. Coaches hate that. I'm a Raiders fan and as pissed as I was that he didn't take the job, I was more pissed that Al couldn't let it go. Everyone knew the Raiders weren't going to be good again with an 80 year old man running the team.
Raider fan since "73 however Davis was an absolute embarrassment the final 10-12 years of his life. He should have realized the game passed him by and gone off to some memory care home. I'd cringe every time he was on the sports news. When he canned Lane Kiffin was the worst! Blood shot eyes, drool coming out of his mouth, mispronouncing his OWN team (he called them "the laiders"!).
HUGE Raiders fan here. I hate to admit it, but I’m glad he chose to decline the position. I believe Al was desparate for one last championship, and if you didnt deliver one within a few years, you were gone. Plus he would never give up his power to someone else. It was HIS way, or the HIGHWAY.
As a die hard raider fan, this really breaks my heart because I'm a huge, huge fan of the New Orleans Saints offense & would've love to seen that implemented in Oakland. The Saints offense is hands down thee best offense in the game right now & the best offense I've ever seen so far. Everything & everyone is utilized effectively, efficiently & beautifully. The Wrs, The Rbs, The TEs. Would've love to have seen the Sean Payton/Saints Offense in Oakland.
@jr That's fine. I respect your opinion. I feel that Sean Payton is a much, much better coach & someone that I would much rather have than Chucky. He's so intelligent, creative & very well organized & efficient in his execution of his offense. He makes the very best of what he has & utilizes them to their strengths. Mark Ingram, his rb for example, isn't the fastest, most explosive, athletic rb, but Sean makes it work. Even the WR corps. Aside from Michael Thomas now, Most of their WRs are usually under the radar, mid round - undrafted type talent & they end up being effective in his system. Drew Brees, even at age 40, is still playing at a very high level & is still one of thee top QBs in the league today. Personally, I feel that Sean Payton is the better coach because of his intelligence, resourcefulness, creativity, leadership & people skills. The Saints still have the majority of the same coaching staff they had 10 years ago when they one the super bowl & they are still relevant, still fresh & still have one of the best offenses in the league. Sean is the man & if we have a shot of getting him to be our coach in 2020 , I'd definitely go for it & wouldn't hesistate at all. He's that good of a coach.
The issue is that in NO Payton has final say on roster personnel and a great relationship with Mickey Loomis. Al Davis always had to be GM so it wouldn't have worked the same.
@@Matt-cr4vv That's interesting because Mickey Loomis said they would always try to come to an agreement but that, at the end of they, Loomis had the final say.
He was a legend. He was the youngest AFL Coach, became AFL Commissioner, and took over the team. He brought the team 3 championships. But that isn't what truly makes him a legend. What makes Al a legend was his generosity for former players, his fight for civil rights, and the fact that he hired the first black head coach and the first female executive. For a guy who was painted the bad guy all those years he was the most high quality human being. It just stinks that his refusal to relinquish any control of the team into his old years has stood out so much in comparison to how much he did in his lifetime.
From a fellow Saints fan, LOL, (WHO DAT!) probably because he would have complete freedom to just coach the Saints how he wants to. Knowing what we know about Payton now, it's HARD to see him being a successful head coach under an owner like Jerry Jones or Al Davis. I think Payton would need more control than owners like them would be willing to concede.
I'm a Raiders fan and I'll let you know exactly what Bill Parcells was saying. Al Davis was 75 years old at that time and he was extremely hard to work for even when he was younger. Imagine being a coach and wanting to draft Calvin Johnson but instead watch as Al Davis drafts JaMarcus Russell instead. The scouts and coaches wanted to draft Aaron Rogers. Davis drafted some fast guy, I think it was a wide receiver with bad hands. Al Davis ran the whole draft and ran the whole roster. Everyone in the NFL knew how bad it was for coaches who worked for Davis. It really was a bad situation. Parcells was being kind by saying it was a 50-50 situation. The Raiders had no shot of being good again until Davis retired or otherwise.
Lane Kiffin proved your point. At first I thought Kiffin was wrong and an a-hole. But, as time always does, it started to reveal more and more of the facts. Now I have done a 180 and feel Kiffin might have been in the right and it was Davis who was losing it to alzheimer's.
The hardest thing in life is saying "no" to something that seems like it might help you, but really will probably not be all that good for you. It takes a real friend to say, "why don't you wait. This thing doesn't feel right for you. Another opportunity is gonna come."
Worked out very well for Peyton, and I am a Raiders fan. Raiders were not a good organisation in all those years since Al fired Gruden and Gruden coming back in 2018. There was some cultural improvement under MacKenzie and Del Rio but only now it seems they may be turning the corner.
The team still had talent at that time. I believe he would've known how to utilize Moss better than Norv Turner did. Raiders also just would pick the fastest player too so that was also becoming a problem at the time. Only two coaches have really worked out since the move back to Oakland. Jon Gruden 98-02 and Hugh Jackson both coaches knew how to utilize Al Davis draft picks. Gruden 2.0 will work out people need to give the man and the team time. Were on the right track. Great interview. Just win baby!
85Raidernation it could take 3 years or set them back 6, this team was a 12 win team a couple years ago so I was kind of expecting him to get them close to that status but looking in hindsite he’s got to get his guys in and build the team in his vision. He definitely has the picks to do so, so we will see in a few years. PS I don’t think Carr will be his QB of the future
Even thru the trade with gruden. Gruden has always been a raider. It's a family bond. May argue and disagree but at the end of they day it's a bond beyond football
Bill Parcells, still calls him "Mr. Davis" after his death. That's how important to football Al Davis was. It was just sad to see him follow the familiar path we usually see in an athlete who doesn't exit when perhaps he should have. It's hard to read some of the things that were written at the time, but people who knew, KNEW who Al Davis was. "Breakfast with Winnie and dinner with Al" -Sean Payton. Brilliant!!
Who’s Winnie?
I’m afraid most of us will never fully know just how great a coach/mentor Bill Parcells is. Nobody who works for him EVER forgets the experience.
Big time Raider fan here . But Al would never give a coach the reins to just coach .
His son did
Gruden did but Al couldn't handle it.
Cookie Money Al Davis hated his son
Al Davis was the man and did it his way R.I.P.
And that way ruined the Raiders for 40 years

SAME EXACT roster and we won our division and made the playoffs.
In first place again this yr, because WE PAY OUR PLAYERS, we dont jerk them around and not reward them for outperforming their contracts.
Players want to play for us and our coach. NOBODY wants to play for the Raiders, especially with that egomaniac nutjob Chucky Cheese running it.
Raiders fans love to blame the media and the "haters" for stating simple FACTS. Nobody hates the Raiders because they suck. U have to be good to have haters, cuz hate stems from jealousy.
You need to look yourself and your team in the mirror and understand that the NFL is a what have u done for me lately league, not a live in the past 4 decades ago one.
@@louzer2566 Oh shut the fuck up "Loser!" Raider fans are our own worst critics! We don't need suckas like you spreading your Raider hate around; the Nation already critiques our team with a sharp and merciless eye. You have no idea. Just worry about your own team.
“Dallas like going to Law School” GTFO!😂. Going to Dallas is like going to watch broke back mountain everyday!🤣
What he Means is Working WIth Bill Parcells that was his Law School .. Did not matter where the team was ..
