- After a year of searching, and battling it out with dealers, I finally got my hands on the 2023 Honda Civic Type R (FL5)! Join me on my journey as I pick up the car, drive it 1200 miles from NY to Florida with my wife and toddler in the back.
In this video series, we're going to explore the FL5 Type R from an owner's perspective. Being a long time FK8 Civic Type R owner, we're also going to compare the previous generation Type R to the new one.

Just hit 1500 miles on my champ white FL5. I absolutely love it. Traded my Porsche Macan in on itt. Only thing done so far is paint correction and ceramic coat. Not gonna go wild like my other civics. Such a special thing to drive.
Just saw a black type r today, and I tell you what, it was beautiful. The rarity of the new type r in comparison to the old type r is what makes it special in my opinion.

Congratulations Gato! I am so happy for ya! I traded my Fk8 a year ago to the date for my FL5! I was fortunate to get my FL5 at msrp! I agree with you get the FL5 is overall a better car than the fk8! Where you and I have had the multiple years with our FK8’ I think we have a good gage at how much better the FL5 is because we have had spent many miles with both cars! I would never go back to my FK8! I have been following tour channel for years and have always enjoyed the content!! Keep up the phenomenal job! Why wouldn't you go back to fk8 Im looking at getting an FK8 is it worth it? What's wrong with it or what's good is it bad?? I can't afford the FL5 sadly so not an option

Red is my favorite color for that generation, congrats on your car! That crash mitigation system actually damages your brakes when it activates for no reason. I had an experience where a chunk of my brake pad broke off and started warping my rotor, so I just turn it off now.
I was disappointed not seeing this car at the car show in Philadelphia this year.

The red looks really good! Yeah, I agree on the tiny gas tank... I wish someone would come up with another option on that... even 14 gallons would help.

Agree with the shifter. I like the S2k type/old school type r teardrop type shifters. I have it on the refreshed FK8. From the videos, the sightlines from the FL5 look way better than the FK8 as well.
Did you consider the Integra Type S?
Turn off the vehicle navigation in the system settings! That will fix your lag problem. The regular cars navigation takes up to much ram and slows it down

I agree comfort mode is really comfortable on the highways and it takes the bumps on the road pretty well. Of course that is @until you lower the car on springs and that goes out the door with comfort mode. But for me it’s still pretty good compared to my other daily which is a 2020 subaru sti.
That’s good to know! I had a 2006 STI and I thought it was fairly comfortable considering how raw that car was , so it sounds like this one has an even better ride

Hey Gato!! I love the red on the FL5. I couldn't find one. I picked up the White and love it. Sorry but you have more miles than me already. Hopefully that will change in the spring.
gotta get those miles up! After seeing the red one in videos, I knew I needed to get it. Less than 200 red Type R's in the US for 2023 made it tough, but I'm happy I held on

@Chappers.Gaming fk8 is still an excellent car and platform, highly recommend in red or white+ the dark blue is my favorite color though.

I owned a ‘22 Civic sport touring hatch. Great car but a little too small for me. Bought an Accord 2.0t Touring and it’s perfect. Would have loved the 2.0t and 10 speed in the Civic if they made it.
Preach it brother, I find the ride perfect, any softer and it would hurt the track performance, my 60yr old father agrees. And the thimble is terrible, I can do 2 20min sessions on track and it needs gas, below 1/3 the fuel warning flicks on and off.
For context, I took mine from Ohio to barber 10hrs, to ViR, the dragon, and back to Ohio, over 2000miles in 4 days, no faults, other than baby gas tank. I have android, and used Google maps. And had very few issues, just a glitch here and there, never tried ways

Sorry to ask about your previous car but I'm looking at buying a 2017 Type R with only 35k miles on it. How does the interior hold up? Scratches/wears easily? I have a 2023 GR86 and I feel like the interior plastics all scratch up super easily. Every day I get in it I notice more lol.
The rear camera is one thing I wish was fixed, my old 2020 brz has a way better camera and the tech isn’t even that good lol. And haven’t really had any trouble with car play whenever I run Apple Maps haven’t tried Waze or google though. Have noticed every now and again the song will stay stuck on the dash even if you change songs, and will only reset after turning of the ignition and turning it back on
My Elantra N gets about 32mpg to 36mpg on the highway (depending on conditions). I'm on all-weather Kumho and the car is well broken in. With daily tires and more break-in mileage, your Type-R should get better.

Congrats on getting the FL5. Luck you, I would say. I have 2 questions for you.
1) Did you pay above MSRP and if so, how much.
2) What gas are you using? Reg or Prem. Car is labeled for Reg, but seems like everyone is using Prem.
Only use premium 93 if possible.

Thanks for this, I've been waiting for something like this video. As an FK8 owner who has his eyes open, I believe that the FL5 is a slightly better car, with a much nicer interior, infotainment system, etc. I'm so disappointed with the looks...I like your description, but it's been just visually tuned down far to much. One of the things that FK8 owners bought was the slightly over-the-top looks. I know quite a few a FK8 owners and only one of them has plans on purchasing an FL5. In ever case, the "No" was based on the pedestrian appearance of the FL5.
Very sorry to learn of the Apple/Android Auto issues. I've not experienced that at all in the FK8.
I've not found the FK8 to be in any way not an excellent road trip car. Not only do I make several trips per year to the NC/TN border area to drive The Dragon and other amazing roads, but my wife and I drove the FK8 from N.O., LA, to Brattleboro, VT, then back down the Eastern seaboard to home. I don't understand the discomfort you spoke of, and understanding that we are in a Civic, I'm not going to compare it to some huge tanked behemoth; I don't have an issue with range or more fill-ups.
My FK8 now has Swift Spec-R springs on it, about 40% stiffer than stock with less travel, along with 18" rims running 255/40 PS4S's on them, and I've made that same 4-5 day round trip to the border area multiple times and I'm still not uncomfortable during the 11-hour drive (with stops). I'm also 63 and more sensitive to some discomforts than younger folks, so I truly don't understand the complaints.
Well, another very complete review and I thank you for it. My wife's car turns 10 next year, so we may end up getting her an FL5, though at this time, she'd prefer a used 2021 FK8 as she likes the looks and thinks the FL5 is 'ugly and boring'. Maybe the fact that the FL5 is in fact a slightly better car will sway her.
In my FK8, I got the European GT version, it has all those gimmicks in it. Lane assist, automatic braking and Auto On/Off. Turned off lane assist and auto on/off most of the time anyways. I use Android Auto, no issues. Am not an Apple person.
Also fun fact, to set the cruise control at over 220 kph, that doesn't work 🙂
The small gas tank is a bummer for sure, I get less than 500 km per tank but that's fine.
Are the seats even better than your old FK8?
Mine also has automatic high beams, didn't like them initially, like them a lot now.
I would say the seats are very slightly better, but the FK8 seats are already so good, these are probably the best seats in the car market. I'm thinking of turning off all the lane keep assist stuff, though it was really nice on a long highway trip.
Just got mine for sticker $45k in Tarrytown 60 miles away from dealership you got yours. Beautiful blue. Very happy.

I'd be happy with the FK8 or FL5 and the S2000, that would be more than enough for me, especially since I don't have the space for cars...
That's the beauty of the FK8 and FL5, they are do it all cars, so you can have an S2000 as your second car.

I know the dealership for 20 years never bought a car from them. Never ever a good deal. They wanted $15k over msrp for your car. They always have cars because of the price. Never understood who would buy it from them.
How many cars do you have and did you pay above MSRP?
6 cars, will be selling at least 1, maybe two, in the next few months. It's currently Camaro vs C6 Z06 Vs Type R, Type R is safe, it's the other two I need to think through

the negotiations took about 2 weeks, and I had to get EVERYTHING in writing, and then had to keep reminding them of the deal, but in the end I was happy.

Ok I appreciate the review and congrats on your Type R…. However I need to say I hope you didn’t pay much over MSRP for a Honda Civic (Type R or not). $45k plus you can get a much better car, or a decent down payment on an entry level Porsche pre-owned. You do realize you oissed away anything over MSRP ($7k? $12k? Shit dude…) So how much did you put down? How much is your car note? Do you own or rent your home? Do you have responsibilities like a family? What do you do for a living? How’s your income to debt ratio? I take it you live in California. I ask because I see many young guys (UA-camrs) posting reviews of Type R’s yet I see them living in a town home or apartments with young children. Yes it’s fun to drive a Type R but really responsibilities should take priority over your superficial needs. I’m mean it’s your money, do as you please but living on maxed out credit and owning/financing a vehicle that takes up more than 50% of your net income is not a wise decision.
I believe if you can’t pay for it cash, don’t buy it. I’m in Florida btw

I get 425 miles on one tank of gas …. 28 is low gas mileage for that car …. I get 33.9

I almost bought a 992 carrera T, after driving a few 991s, and 2 992s, I thought the type R is 95% as good at 1/3 of the price.
Dude, I drove both on the street and on the track. You compared it on driving on the highway which most cars are good...come on.
I’ll admit, the 911 is of course better, the balance, the build quality, the performance… but, at least so far, the Type R is scratching the Porsche itch. If the FL5 doesn’t overheat too badly, I think it’ll stop me from wanting to get a 911z
