Swede here: I can confirm that the Japanese pronunciation of “IKEA” is same as Swedish. However it’s not a word but rather a acronym. The acronym that makes up the name stands for Ingvar Kamprad (the founder's name), Elmtaryd (the farm where the founder grew up), and Agunnaryd (the founder's hometown).
Thanks Shinichi, Mika Moo and I stayed a week in an Airbnb next to Shinjuku Goen in 2017 just down the Street from Tsukemen Gonokami Seisakusho. It was great seeing it again. Your favourite spot used to have a lot more Australian native plants back in 2017, it’s still a great spot to sit and eat cakes with a coffee.
Shinichi thank you so much for this tour of Shinjuku! That seating area above the trains is one I will remember, it looks so nice and a place to relax and drink a coffee or tea :)
I am a dishware freak.😂 You and I would have so much fun browsing pottery studios/stores throughout Japan. I really loved the lotus root plate in Nitori. If I were still throwing, I'd "borrow" the design. 😊 I adore your "hidden gems" videos, Shinichi. There is always so much to see and learn. My personal favorites are the tucked away parks, shrines/temples, and mom & pop stores and restaurants. Thank you for all you (and Satoshi) do! 💙💙
Thank you so much for this video. I liked everything about iyt even when you digress and you give us little bits of info.. Love so don't apologize... looking forward to seeing the park.🤗🥰💕
I can’t wait to visit Tokyo in January! It’ll be my first time visiting japan, and being outside of the USA at all. I’d like to take a walk up mount Takao as well if I find the path to the mountain understandable. Thanks for the videos as usual
Make sure to visit omoide yokocho located near Shinjuku station. Also known as piss alley dont let this scare you off! Its a short alley that is nothing short of amazing
I love this! Great tour, thank you. It's super timely for me as i'm coming to Japan in 2 weeks and staying right near where you ended this video. Arigato!
What a wonderful tour! I can't wait for part 2. I will likely never get to travel to Japan but at least I can experience it some through your videos. Thank you for the cookbook recommendations, I'd love to learn more about authentic Japanese food. Are there any other coolbooks you would recommend? I am in Indiana , USA. I love to cook and think it's such a wonderful way to learn about others, and to show care and love. Thanks for all the hard work you put into these videos! Be well.
@markylon maybe one day, however I'm getting older and have some considerable health issues I must take into account. I would love to visit and learn more about the country and people first hand. My husband, as a teen, lived with a Japanese man in New York city for a while, as his dad had a job that meant they moved a lot and he didn't care to keep moving. This man taught him a lot and took good care of him. The man was tragically killed by a stray bullet though :(
@markylon ty! We all have challenges in life. Embrace each day :) some people lie about their age I am happy to tell my age, many do not make it as long as I have.
Thank you for this walking tour along Shinjuku. We will be travelling to Japan mid November and your video will be a great help for me as I will be alone most of the time on our trip as my daughter will be travelling to Shizuoka to watch the NEWS concert. So excited to visit Japan once more.
To the right is one of my favorite hotels “the century tower” , thanks for walking in one of my favorite areas of town which I have not visited since late 2019. And the park is one of the must see spots in all of Tokyo, regardless of the seasons.
Thank you for showing Shinjuku! I really appreciate your videos ☺️. I am having a research on how best to go about visiting Japan. We hope to meet you in person. ☺️New sub here from Berkeley California 🇺🇸
We are staying in Shinjuku in December to attend Opulence, so I am totally going to try the matcha and hojicha in NeWoman! It's funny how many of the restaurants and tea shops in Tokyo are the same as in SoCal these days. Your walk feels so familiar to us - a combination of visiting several times (including buying things in the antenna shop and Hands) and watching your videos for many years. That's why we love your secondary channels so much, always new things to see in cozy vibes.
I had to take overnight buses from Busta Shinjuku a few times (before Corono pandemic) so I'm glad to see all the shops in the area are still there! This year I actually went to Japan in late September but stayed mostly out of Tokyo, maybe next year I'll have some time to check out some of my favorite shops around Shinjuku station, including L-Breath!
Thanks for the video. Please advise how early I should go to take a bullet train to Kanazawa, Is it save to download and use Ex app to order Shinkansen tickets ( the review rating is not great)Thanks
I can’t believe I missed this area. It looks a lot cleaner and newer than the east exit. I guess I was too focused on the Kabukicho area and the western area near the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building. Maybe next time…
Getting lot around shinjuku station is one of my favoutire things to do in japan. Your japanese pronunciation of Ikea is more or less how we say it in sweden.
Thanks Shinichi, Shinjuku confuses me so avoid as get disoriented&evenTokyo station too big. Pizza Bar on 38th meant to have great pizza in Tokyo&tried Guzman&Gomez in Harajuku from Oz just to compare. I saw EggSlut in LA&I hope to return in the future to Japan as liked Sapporo Thanks for the tour of your backyard Shinichi,it is always great to explore
It's been a very long time since I've been in Shinjuku. I think it was 2019. I think so much has changed since then. I remember that they build some of the things I think at the new south area. That was in my student days. I always go to Shinjuku new south for the Christmas lights if I'm in Tokyo around that time of year. I was in Shinjuku in the middle of September, and it was still ridiculously hot and humid. I'm coming back at the end of November and I'll be staying at the Gracery Hotel. That's awesome to hear. Looking forward to welcoming you guys back.
Shinichi, thanks for taking us along on your afternoon walk!
I love how at 12:55 the dad and his son have matching outfits.
I love shopping at Shinjuku. Theres so much to see and eat.
Can’t wait to explore these streets and shops again very soon!!
Thank for making this video Shinichi, it really helps a lot for first time Japan travelers. I shared this to my friend and they liked it.
I like your patience in explaining perspective
Shinichi thank you so much for this tour of Shinjuku! That seating area above the trains is one I will remember, it looks so nice and a place to relax and drink a coffee or tea :)
Thanks for your video. Very interesting and informative to know Shinjuku
Can’t wait to watch this in the hotel tonight when we finish our road trip!
thank you for the walk, I would love more walking and stationery as well as food hunting. Thank you!

Hey Shinichi, thank you so much for sharing, I enjoyed the vlog as I like household ware! The walk is informative, thanks!
I always smile when I see Marui. Of course when I was young I called it oioi. Thanks for the walk!
Great vid!
Thank you 😊 I'm visiting tokyo next month, this helps 🎉
Hope you enjoy it!
Loved Hands on my recent trip. They were so helpful with a broken. Suitcase. Stayed at hotel grocery.
All good.
Love this your as it is now familiar.
I love this! Great tour, thank you. It's super timely for me as i'm coming to Japan in 2 weeks and staying right near where you ended this video. Arigato!
I like this format. Can't wait to see what other places you'll highlight! 👍
My daughter in law makes some lovely hand poured candles! I have them all over my house!

@@darahhart5872 you're as only as old as you feel.
Very helpful - thanks so much for uploading, will definitely try this route 👍👍
This is great, more in this format please 🤞👏
What a fun neighborhood! How blessed to know a trainspotter. That has to be helpful.
Shinjuku is the place I always stay when I go to Tokyo. Convenient transportation and plenty of delicious food options.
Thank you. Pls make more video of more things to do. And how many days a are good to spend there?
This was so nice. And my god, I'm always floored by how well dressed Japanese people are!
Right?! Like everyone is dressed to the 9s. When my brother and I were there we wore jeans and athletic wear mostly and felt SO out of place
Oh my gosh, RIGHT!? I travelled in loose sweatpants in a "corduroy" feel and hoodie, no makeup. I felt like a garbage bag haha@@ethanpope410
This is a nice video. Thank you for posting. I’ve subscribed to your channel.
A very nice walk. I think it was cool That you and Satoshi have the same Perfect spot to sit relax, and watch Trains in Tokyo 👍🏻
Yes if you could do a video about all the underground parts in Shinjuku that would be very interesting!
Definitely interested in the underground world of shinjuku station. I’ve literally never exited where I meant to 😂😂😂
Thank you for the video! It’d very helpful is you could add some Google Maps links with the places you showed 🙂
Wonderfully informative video as always, Shinichi-San. Thanks for uploading.

We stayed at Hotel Century Southern Tower right above the Shake Shack in April and we’ll be back next April. I love the area and the views from above.
That something something train line seems interesting
Thank you for showing Shinjuku! I really appreciate your videos ☺️. I am having a research on how best to go about visiting Japan. We hope to meet you in person. ☺️New sub here from Berkeley California 🇺🇸
I'll be going for the first time in January and will be staying by Shinjuku! So hyped
Your japanese way of saying IKEA is pretty much spot on the swedish way.

What a dream to live in a well designed city. Hate having to drive everywhere here in California.
Hi love you guys! Can you explain what the yellow lines on the sidewalk are? Thx
Thank you for making the Shinjuku Gyoen mistake so that I am reminded to check the public holiday dates! 🙏🏻

I am staying at the Keio Plaza Hotel October 9 to 11th. Are you going to show the Keio plaza?
Last time I went past that Shake Shack there was a line out the door :o

We went to Tokyo in 2017 and could not find public seating anywhere! So glad you made this video to reduce our 20,000 steps to 19,500 steps 😂😂😂
I am going over to Japan in January 2024. Are there recommendations?
Clearly we haven’t taken advantage of the Shibuya area when we visited 😢. We’ll try doing that with our next visit! ❤
I feel like I say that about literally every area I visited, when I see people make videos

Is ok,thank you so much,so good to see you without mask,it must be so hard to breath and talk under
Where is the best Okonomiyaki restaurants in Shinjuku
the idea of parks even being able to be closed is such a strange idea to me as an american... but i guess japan has a lot of stuff that's different

The Tim Ho Wan doesn't have a Michelin star. The one in Hong Kong does.
👍👍
God I cant wait to be there in Feburary. Gonan been 4 days in Tokyo and 2 days in Hakone
Loved this! Can you go in to the IKEA next time? 😃
