  • I had a little spare time so I threw a couple of wire antennas into the back of the car with the Icom IC7200. I threw two wire antennas into the car as it was a quick bit of static mobile radio rather than anything well thought out.

    1) The 7200 will take 3:1 at 100w with the double rated PA's.
    2) The 7200 is just a great radio for portable and semi portable operations.
    3) I like the Drive Over mount. Very innovative.
    4) Nice hat on the back seat. Do you have the Woostad to go with it ? Do you often dress like Al Bowlly ?
    5) Great video, thanks.

Carl, have you ever measured actual current draw on standby/receive and various transmit powers?
There’s so little user data out there compared to say the FT-897.
We’re limited to 50W portable over here so if anyone can give me a rough figure for power draw or current & voltage at 50W as well as standby that would be welcome.
    Keep the content coming.

You should be getting 10 meters open most day just now Carl. 11 meter is going every day. I have heard Brazil (never heard them before on 11 meters) an Japan (I thought their CB was not on 27 MHz)? But that won't stop some anyway. 10 meters has been alive most days, though my receiver let out some magic smoke and I have not fixed it yet. Not even taken off the cover to see what is inside. It is a make that is known for not giving much information out about their equipment and I think it is a little deaf at times.
    Anyway, stay safe.

Could you please describe the battery you used with the IC-7200? I recently purchased a drive over flagpole mount and would like to try portable operations with my IC-7200 as well. TIA.

I use a 10 amp hour lipo battery, I fit power pole connectors onto every bit of kit for compatibility. For the lipo batteries I carry a small battery test to make sure I don't run the battery too low.

I've got one of those antennas for 10 & 12m Carl, it's works but can never work out if it's better then the Antron99 I also use. That has been brilliant this week making some great contacts on 10m it was 59 vs 53 on the DX Commander which I struggle with on 10m, probably due to the short element been so slow to the ground behind trees and houses while the A99 was 8m high. Lovely sound on that radio. I miss being out away from the static.. 73

I had my first 6m contact the other day, u was hearing stations from Germany booming in and couldn't get back to them on the rubber duck on the ft817. Heard a UK call so tried them and made contact, turns out he was less than a mile away 😂😂😂
