my silly little guess for the rattlies inside them is that it might help one hear where it is when its being used out of view, like on ones back. i remember getting a massage, even when totall relaxed, i still got slightly startled when the masseur`s hand lifted off of me, i didnt know where it went, then it touched somewhere else. nothing crazy, but just might be another minor thing thats easy to add, to contribute to the safe and relaxing atmosphere you would likely want in a bath.
I think everyone should know that these beautiful items she's showing have been stolen from Iran. It's really annoying to us iranian when we see our history being stolen like that. It's really shameful
I agree with all of the above but also wonder if the different pitches of each object helped differentiate between them in the twilight, or dark of the bath house, making sure you'd got the right one for the right function. Lovely work as ever JRB!
LOVE THIS! I'm studying history at my college and ASMR is such an enjoyment of mine while studying this is absolutely the perfect mix of both!!!! Learning and relaxing!
All of these objects are sealed, fired objects. Anything with an air pocket inside must have a hole before firing or it will explode. I can't see if a hole was sealed or covered over after firing in any of these, but I would like to know how it was done. Wondering if the rattle bits were inserted after firing and then hole was covered over? Loved this video!
Actually, Closed things can be fired without a hole as long as they are fully dry, its moisture that causes things to explode really and with closed objects its hard to tell if its fully bone dry, not air pockets itself
Please make more like this!! It's sooooo fascinating and relaxing and educational. I absolutely love this, it intersects so many of my interests I realllllyyy love this series!! This especially :)
The holes in the bottom of the shoe and the teardrop were to prevent the object from shattering or exploding when they were fired in a kiln or similarly made since it is pottery and had to be heated to obtain the shiny and smooth surface that it has. I believe the rattling inside is from tiny broken off pieces of the ceramic when it was cooked and heated up. When there are fragile pieces while it is heated up, they will break off. I have made pottery myself in a kiln and have heard that same rattling noise in some of my work and sometimes have not been able to shake it out of the hole that was made in the bottom of the piece to keep it from exploding
Love it! the rattle sounds remains me of the foot massage scenes from the movie ‘Raise the Red Lantern’, in which the little hammer-like tools used had a soothing rattle sound too, and helped to the sensory experience of the massage. Oh that's nice. In my country we had to find stones for rubbing in the bath. I've always wondered why not "make" stone. Nice to know Persians already solved that! 😊
I wonder if someone who works with ceramics could give insight for some of these pieces. Ie with the hole on the bottom or what would be used for the rattle
Who is she? She's so lovely at this but she also has my dream career so I'm super fascinated to know how she got there? So flipping cool! and this was such a fascinating delightful watch
Such interesting items to use in a bath! A washcloth you would think would be most common but these amazing items were crafted and used instead. I wonder what made them think of these?
Try to blow into the drop with a hole from short distance. Maybe it has sound? I agree that there rattles could be done to make the difference without seeing the object for people who use it, or for these who receiving procedures and has to be sure the needed is used. Also, perhaps the different sound is created for different speed usage as additional meditation element. Like maybe there was a belief that different sound relaxes person in needed way. Kind of historic ASMR practice :)
Since you can differentiate the rattle maybe that's the point? If one were blind or sight impaired or if it was dark you could tell one from the other?
Genuine question - not just a snarky comment: Isn't there some better way to put the identification number on an item, rather than with a marker? I know you have been as careful as possible, with putting it on the underside, but when you turned over the first rasp to see the number in black marker was a bit of a shock.
Might I suggest that the cypress three rasp is filled pieces of dried cypress resin. Cypress sap is collected because it has anti microbial properties smells very beautiful when burned.
Everything inside must be fire proof to survive the fire, as it cannot be put inside afterwards. So most likely bits of clay which became ceramic during the fire, or pebbles of certain stones.
they are from Iran and they are stolen. Britain has stolen so many of our artifacts. Including the Cyrus Cylinder which was the first version of a human rights charter 2,500 years ago. I'm furious

@@optimisms The object history section on the V&A website for these states that: “This object was purchased in Tehran in 1873, by Robert Murdoch Smith on behalf of the Museum. In his first bulk acquisition for the South Kensington Museum (today the V&A), Murdoch Smith had bought "a considerable collection" of over 100 examples of metalwork, ceramic, inlaid woodwork and textile from different local sources, including French diplomat Emile Charles Bernay and four art-dealers: Nasrullah Dellal, Abu'l-Hassan Dellal, Abdul-Husayn and Reza Kashi of Tehran. Well, now I need one of these
Perhaps the large tear drop has a hole so it could be "weighted" by filling it with water. It could also be heated or cooled too this way
The ducks pitch would've also been affected by its shape which could explain the confusion
wouldn’t the hole be necessary to keep the hollow form from exploding in the kiln?
Why did someone write directly on the bottom of them with marker???

The holes in hollow porcelain objects are to relieve pressure during kiln firing. Part of the manufacturing process.# ask a ceramicist.
I would assume that they were made hollow so that they would float. I'm curious on how they were made.
Wouldn't introducing an air pocket into the kiln process be.. a risk? I'm not versed in pottery but am curious.

You have to put a hole in a large hollow clay sculpture before you fire it don’t you? So it doesn’t explode lol
The large tear drop one prolly has the hole to dispense whatever cleaning solution desired, as you scrub.
