    All of these objects were bought by the museum in Iran, in the 19th century. If you'd like to find out more about how the museum collected art from Iran, we can recommend reading 'Persian Art: Collecting the Arts of Iran for the V&A' by Moya Carey, which is available from the National Art Library: nal-vam.on.worldcat.org/search?queryString=Persian%20Art%3A%20Collecting%20the%20Arts%20of%20Iran%20for%20the%20V%26A%20by%20Moya%20Carey&clusterResults=false&groupVariantRecords=false

    my silly little guess for the rattlies inside them is that it might help one hear where it is when its being used out of view, like on ones back. i remember getting a massage, even when totall relaxed, i still got slightly startled when the masseur`s hand lifted off of me, i didnt know where it went, then it touched somewhere else. nothing crazy, but just might be another minor thing thats easy to add, to contribute to the safe and relaxing atmosphere you would likely want in a bath.

    All of these objects are sealed, fired objects. Anything with an air pocket inside must have a hole before firing or it will explode. I can't see if a hole was sealed or covered over after firing in any of these, but I would like to know how it was done. Wondering if the rattle bits were inserted after firing and then hole was covered over? Loved this video!

    • @sabrinacozine8
      @sabrinacozine8 2 роки тому +17

      Actually, Closed things can be fired without a hole as long as they are fully dry, its moisture that causes things to explode really and with closed objects its hard to tell if its fully bone dry, not air pockets itself

    The holes in the bottom of the shoe and the teardrop were to prevent the object from shattering or exploding when they were fired in a kiln or similarly made since it is pottery and had to be heated to obtain the shiny and smooth surface that it has. I believe the rattling inside is from tiny broken off pieces of the ceramic when it was cooked and heated up. When there are fragile pieces while it is heated up, they will break off. I have made pottery myself in a kiln and have heard that same rattling noise in some of my work and sometimes have not been able to shake it out of the hole that was made in the bottom of the piece to keep it from exploding

    Isn't there some better way to put the identification number on an item, rather than with a marker?

    Try to blow into the drop with a hole from short distance. Maybe it has sound? I agree that there rattles could be done to make the difference without seeing the object for people who use it, or for these who receiving procedures and has to be sure the needed is used. Also, perhaps the different sound is created for different speed usage as additional meditation element. Like maybe there was a belief that different sound relaxes person in needed way. @@optimisms The object history section on the V&A website for these states that: “This object was purchased in Tehran in 1873, by Robert Murdoch Smith on behalf of the Museum. In his first bulk acquisition for the South Kensington Museum (today the V&A), Murdoch Smith had bought "a considerable collection" of over 100 examples of metalwork, ceramic, inlaid woodwork and textile from different local sources, including French diplomat Emile Charles Bernay and four art-dealers: Nasrullah Dellal, Abu'l-Hassan Dellal, Abdul-Husayn and Reza Kashi of Tehran. Many further acquisitions followed in the years 1873-1878 and 1883-1885, most extensively from the art-dealer Jules Richard, long resident in Tehran.” So these (at least) appear to have been legitimately obtained.
