ASMR at the V&A - 1 / Charlie Chaplin and Henry Irving

- // Please listen with headphones for this film //
Our collection of Theatre & Performance objects includes props and costumes from many iconic moments in the history of circus, dance, drama, film, opera, pantomime, popular music - and much more. Often these objects played their part in a spectacular visual and auditory experience, but now - when they're displayed in our galleries behind glass - they are normally silent.
We invited sound designer and performance-maker Julie Rose Bower to document our preparation for a new gallery display, opening later this year. In this first film curator Yona Lesger lets us see (and hear) pieces being unpacked from storage, before they undergo conservation work.
This first film features Charlie Chaplin’s ‘Little Tramp’ bowler hat and a late-19th-century costume worn by Henry Irving, the actor-manager of the Lyceum Theatre.
Timestamps
1. Charlie Chaplin’s ‘Little Tramp’ bowler hat - 00:58
2. Henry Irving’s ‘Mephistopheles’ hood - 06:16
3. Henry Irving’s ‘Mephistopheles’ invisible glasses - 08:50
4. Henry Irving’s ‘Mephistopheles’ electrified shoe and glove - 10:32
5. Henry Irving’s ‘Mephistopheles’ tights - 12:49
As if V&A museum wasn't cool enough! It's just absolutely incredible how you work with the audience nowadays: quizes in instagram stories and exciting facts in posts, fabulous videos here on youtube -- nothing is boring when it comes to your content. And now -- ASMR. I absolutely adore you, guys. Please kiss your PR department from me (a social approved distant kiss, of course).
got major tingles on the Invisible glasses part
This is such a sweet and well-worded comment

Give them one from me too. I love this channel so much. Asmr AND historical artifacts..nothing could be better
@@myon9431 yess ❤️
wooow please, please, please make this a really common theme on your channel. This sounds amazing and you also educate the public!!
Yes, I second that! What a wonderful series!
Yes, please!
Please please!
this was a brilliant idea, but the presenter was especially amazing in both her passionate yet reserved narration and handling the objects in a VERY ORGANIC manner.
I feel too many people (myself included) fail at creating an organic ASMR experience because we forget the fluid, narrative element to exploring objects when we artificially tap and touch them excessively.
Great observations from someone I consider one of the best artists out there!!! Big fan!
Clothes sounds are my favorite asmr, and I love history podcasts. This combination is perfect! If you continue to do these, furniture would also be grand. Brushing upholstery, exploring detailed carvings, opening little drawers and shelves etc.
What are some good history podcasts 😊?
Ooh yh that would be amazing
@@Rmxpaola I am late but my favorite is: Stories, A history of Appalachia. The two gentlemen who do the podcast have wonderful personalities and voices. Did you find any that you liked?
The video I’ve been waiting for I need all the conservation channels to participate cause they do it unintentionally and it’s why I’m unintentionally educated on the conservation of artifacts
Let's see how this works for you!
The “special effects” worked into these early costumes are incredible!!
I just found this playlist and I already love it. I hope there are many more videos like this to come.
You're in luck Kate. Keep your eyes peeled!
This woman is my favourite out of all the videos. Her touch to those objects ❤️ I don’t know if she watches asmr but she seems to have a great ear for it.
Yesss she's so good
her accent! I can't pin it but I adore it.
@@solarcowgirl its sounds a little scottish or irish but im not sure
@@CrazyxCowGamer that’s what I was thinking, but there’s like a third random thing in there right? am I insane?
I agree ..she has a wonderful soft voice that is completely mesmerising .....and it’s her favourite costume ...so interesting to hear the information ....
What a delightful accent and voice this woman has. Thoroughly enjoyable.
Really enjoyed this. Immersive. Much more than a regular "show & tell." Hope to see more ASMR videos in the future.
I feel so relaxed and educated at the moment.
This is a WONDERFUL idea! Education in asmr. Better still,, HISTORY and ARTIFACTS in asmr. I am sooo hooked. As if I needed 1 more reason to love the V&A😏
I've been binge watching Baumgartner Restoration for my tingling history fix, nice to add this to my repertoire. Congratulations Julie Rose Bower, this was a hit!☆
@@leonh67 I absolutely will, thanks! ! And Happy Christmas to you
Wow, the privilege of holding the very bowler hat that Charlie Chaplin wore. Just amazing to literally hold history in your hands.
This is great! Museum curators and people in charge of restorations seem to be well suited to ASMR due to the delicate handling of objects, even the Schiaparelli video has an unintentional ASMR vibe. You picked interesting items objects to show, and this format allows people to see more details than they might notice in a museum exhibition. Hope we get to see more! :)
I legit have been watching this video every night for the past month.
Same lmao
Wonderful idea to focus on sound. As a conservator myself, I know that an important part of the sensory input that informs our understanding of the physical reality of an object comes from sound. I do wish I could hear what she says a little better, though.
This is my favorite one from the series so far! It’s got all of the great tingly sounds, she has a great voice for ASMR, and it’s like an “unboxing” video as well! I love how she understood the assignment and gave us amazing sounds, but also is so informative!
Would love to see more from her and her department!
More asmr pls, now I cant stop listening this video
This Young lady is the Best of all the V&A museum videos 😌😌😌
Her voice keeps me coming back
Bravo V&A Museum for your marketing genius. I am a serious ASMR lover and I have a love of history. You have combined my two favorites and I am excited to visit you next year on holiday!
I was looking up ASMR to see what it was while watching this. As I read the Wikipedia article I was feeling it. And that was over conventional loudspeakers. Particularly enjoyable (on another level) because you've featured Irving's Mephistopheles costume.
There’s some really creative ASMR videos out there! I love listening to them as I fall asleep 😴
This was great, very interesting. My only suggestion would be if you could write in the title what this is about (Charlie Chaplin’s hat & Henry Irving’s costume) since some people may be interested in these but not necessarily in the ASMR part. It’d be a shame to miss out on such great content.
Thank you for your suggestion, we've added this!
these people have the best job ever, combining ASMR with the preservation of so many iconic items, so cool, love these videos 💘
Her voice is everything ✨
The ultimate ASMR sounds video. It doesn’t get better!
whoever is in charge of social media and the likes at V&A, you're a fucking star!
Ms Lesger and Ms Bower did an excellent job. So relaxing 😌
The royality of ASMR
The Chaplin biopic brought me back to this video. Enjoyed watching again! 💜
Iv trained and worked as a C ostumier doing everything from tailoring dressmaking alterations both ladies and gents and hat making so much goes into milenary so many processes you have to be very strong handed with hats they were built to last xxx thanku 4 this must visit v and a after lockdown xxxx
Oh Charlie’s hat gave some good sounds 🥰
Please post more of these! It sounds amazing and educational at the same time. Great ASMR video.
That hat made awesome sounds..
Great content and love the concept of using ASMR to showcase these amazing objects - Excellent work!!
Preparing for watch an asmr video, boom! Chaplin's hat shows up!
The V&A and ASMR! Two of my favourite things in one video!
This video is perfect! I listen to so much ASMR, I rarely get tingles anymore, but this video never fails! The unboxing and paper sounds are perfect! More ASMR videos like this are definitely needed!!
These costumes are so amazing. Would love to visit one day.
The best job on Earth!
Really good, Loved it. A true ASMR video, well done
Please do more of these!
love love love this - thanks V and A!
Amazing thank you
Can't wait to see it!!!!
That was great. Thank you
Thank you, now i am hooked. I need a weekly dose of this please.
The presenter does such a great job👏👏
Now this is a treat. Post the other one :D
Don't mind me, just making timestamps for my favvv parts:
1:50 and 3:30
This is absolutely perfect. Thank you.
wow the wearing his hat part was kinda crazy to me
It was so tingly for meee
This is just beautiful how they have all this beautiful things from the past
Just breath taking❤❤❤❤
Would love to see more videos like this
Great history 'lesson', more please. Thanks
I literally can't watch this without my eyes drooping towards the end 😂 I love it
Amazing and she’s a natural
The special effects she was talking about in Faust sounded both impressive and highly dangerous.
More more more please....beautiful interesting and oh that tissue paper.....tingle all the way ❤
I could sincerely listen to her talk about every object in that Museum.
This was lovely. Something about “feeling” Chaplin’ actual hat gave it something extra.
I wish I’d been recommended it years ago!
Very good content. Would love to see more of this
Does anyone know the archive numbers for the Mephistopheles' costume pieces? I managed to find a cap he wore with this ensemble but can't find the glove or hood.
The museum numbers here should help: ua-cam.com/video/bH7Sr3_HZfk/v-deo.html
Such cool facts about the glasses! Never would have thought of that. Makes one wonder how else different aids can be incorporated into the art itself. Thanks for taking the time to make videos like these 💗
This is something I didn’t know I needed 🤯
I didn’t know I needed this video in my life 😭
I am a huge fan of this series! Amazing job
This was wonderful to see! I've often looked at portraits of Henry Irving as Mephistophiles, but I never imagined that the costume still existed!
Love this, love her voice, love what I'm learning, would love it even more if she'd speak ridiculously slowly
Yess I love this!!
im obsessed
This is sensational.
so nice, iI love it 🎩
Such wonderful idea. I used to watch V&A videos previously for their ASMR effect and because they were so interesting. Now that they’re really leaning into this I hope it provides the much needed funding I’m sure they lost during the pandemic.
Love it!!!
OMG V&A need to have Maria as a special guest to help them inbox items!!!!!! It could show us the items but teach how to handle and examine artifacts!!!!!
This was amazing!
Really good idea!! Hope to see more
The contents of this I didn't know I needed very informative
Wow surprising amount of hate comments and people in the comments claiming to be better experts. If you don’t like ASMR move on. It’s only about 3 videos on their large channel.
Fr and it's refreshing seeing ur comments ❤️
love these videos!!
This is my favourite asmr vid ever! Educational and relaxing 🥰🥰
I hate that I can't like this video 1000 times
THIS IS SO GOOD!!!! 💯💯💯👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Too bad there were not photographs of the actors with costume for Faust !
wonderful
So weirdly satisfying , ahhhhhhh.
Wow this was unexpected. Very nice 👌
I don't care about th ASMR, I'm honoured to see those items up close and I'm deathly jealous of the person who got to hold them
I do question the authenticity of that hat, however, as in all of Chaplin's films he uses a soft hat that can be crushed and popped back out again.
Also, the stiffness, air vents and inside drawstring make it seem more equestrian than day wear.
Good way to pitch views.
Thanks For this! How many videos have you made? laters xd
Two so far
Damn this was sick, eh
The glasses look like an 0w0 face! XD I love these videos ❤
Had to stop the video when Henry Irving's shoes were examined. I remembered a song by the group "Traffic: called "The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys;" gave it a listen...believe me, the song wasn't about Irving's shoes.
6:54 wait it stings or stains her fingers? And how come
I am horrified for Mr. Irving! Electricity shooting up his leg and arm, out of his hand!!! EEEEEKKKK!
tiny sausages and dounuts. sounds delicious
Did anyone else see the invisible glasses?
Wow
i can imagine what this stuff smells like lol
How tall was he
