I am a very simple man. I am grateful to have heard such subtle poetry at an age when I might have appreciated or even understood. My friends were older at the time. They sniggered in a way in which I realised I must make an effort to understand. In this time I smirk knowingly. A litmus test of heart-felt emotion.
I live in Australia these days; but my formative years were John Peel in the late 1970's and early 1980's - he opened my eyes to a world that was not visible to me at that time. Ivor Cutler pushed my (then) narrow boundaries of understanding what music was, or could be. John's late night playlist was always a joy. Every night sprung a surprise - something I had never heard before. This inner joy will never leave me. IC was a genius, a wit with no peer. I miss them both
Yes, the only Radio one DJ that never talked over the records he played. Neither at start or at the finish of a record - never a single interruption from the late great JP. No time checks either on his 10 til midnight show. He was the best. RIP JP
Like you I now live in Australia and also have many memories of Peel playing Ivor Cutler. I particularly remember this episode and was delighted to find that it was now on UA-cam and just as funny as I remembered. Happy days
John Peel's hero. He was in the Beatles Magical Mystery tour in 1967.Often played with Lol Coxhill . Poet, tale, teller and restrained genius of understated bleak comedy. RIP big man. Timeless material.
@baleariclife89 It might turn up on 'Late Junction' on radio 3 (Tue, Wed, Thur) they do do an eclectic mix of things you wouldn't normally hear. Wonder if its worth sending a link to Verity Sharpe or Fiona Talkington?
I miss John Peel and Ivor Cutler, life is poorer now with nothing on the radio worth listening to, XFM and Kerrangs don't come close to filling the gap left by Peel. As for Radio 1, (6 or 7 also) forget it.
This is the definition of genius.
I used to listen to Peel every night and loved it !
I like to listen to Ivor Cutler once a year or so. Any more would be like bingeing on fine wine or chocolate.
25th December is Ivor Cutler Day in our house.

Voiding the bowels in those days was unheard of. People just kept it in... :)
