I have to say I'm in love with my '14 Super Tenére. Beautifully built. Solid feel under you. Great fuel mileage & range. She's eye candy wherever I go. Easy to accessorize.... In all she's a keeper for sure

Great review. I lapped up every word you said.........and I would agree. And yes, I believe that Yamaha is the best !
Man, ANYTHING is better than BMWs. I am 65 and since I was 17, rode Yamahas or Hondas. In 2004 I bought a R1150RT brand new. At the moment it is doing 68,000kms. Oh ! All kinds of things went bad. Fuel pump, starter, clutch gone at 50,000kms, ABS module failure, water in headlight from day 1, twice broken muffler bracket, crumbling wire looms, fallen-out taillight ending up crushed by the rear wheel, very clunky gearbox (tractor-trailer drivers hear when you change gears !) and more. I hardly ride it anymore. POS as far as I am concerned.
In my experience with bikes and cars..............There is NOTHING comparable with the Japanese machine ! Trinidad & Tobago.

All very fair points. Given that the GS is known for catastrophic shaft failure (what could be worse?), breaking forks, electric gremlins and lots of owners pissed off at how much they need to depend on the bmw dealership network I wouldn't consider one if I could afford one. Also I'm told that if you want someone to fit extras like heated grips or aux lights, most mechanics won't touch a BMW and the only option is a pricey BMW shop. No doubt the bike handles and performs amazingly but they can't be relied on. I've not found (and I have looked) a single example of shaft drive failure on a Super Tenere. But for some reason the Yamaha has been sidelined by the press and gets slated by journalists but the owners love them. My 2010 runs like a dream and I have absolute faith it will always do what I ask of it.

Problem is lack of power on yamaha, I hear that ecu flash helps to squeeze little more hp. I curently have 2019 V-storm 1000xt, which is ok, handles nice in twisties. I have upgraded suspension($2000). Last couple of summers I rent bmw gs for 2 weeks for long trip, and Im in love how it handles, but yes quality and maintenance is shit. And that is only think stoping me from buying one. I'm hoping for 2023, 100 year anniversary they will get their shit together, I doubt it

It was a great bike but Yamaha got lazy and has really neglected the old super tenere. Imho the multistrada enduro does everything the gs and super tenere do but better, all while being built like a tank. Feels lighter off-road, much more compliant suspension, more power, no stupid shaft issues, no stupid engine issues and comes stock with all amenities.

I own an old BMW R1100GS (1998) for 11 years now, has nearly 70.000 km now (bought it with very low mileage). I'm sooo glad I didn't have more money on a newer model back in 2011. I totally understand what you are talking about - having a GS, also see many people complaining in forums about major failures of gearbox/clutch/final drive/even the engine!
So far I did only two repairs - leaking front brake pump and broken tachometer cable. The 1100GS is an old and simple machine, all maintenance can I do at home with basic tools. But even this old 1100GS, which is mostly built like a tank had some problems, so you need to care which model year you buy. For instance, models from 1994-1996 had gearbox issues. The final drive together with the clutch - I just expect these two things will need replacement in around 100.000km (for final drive I mean to change the bearings).
The Super Tenere is on my secret wishlist :) I think I'd choose it over the AfricaTwin. These are the two machines I'd consider if I'd buy a new machine right now.

For me it is actualy weird to find so many bmw motorcycles on the secondhand market of only 1,2,3,4 years and so on. When I'm looking for a Tenere they are all much older. I know there are a lot less of them because of the numbers sold. But it seems people just sale the Yamaha's only after years of riding. Not because they are disapointed after such a short period. Plus BMW might have a few good points but the one big PLUS for the Tenere is the 5 to 6000 euro difference to start with. And that is before you start adding options !!

Hmmm, got curious so did a little anecdotal sample. I compared the first 20 used BMW GS in Marketplace near me (2010 and above so as to have apples and apples year range) and the first 20 used Super Tenere near me. Average age of the BMW's was 8 years and average age of the Yamaha's was 10 years. The newest overall was Yamaha at 1 year and the newest BMW was 5 years - so you can see in my incredibly small and statistically insignificant study - there is some validity anecdotally. Interestingly the BMW's averaged significantly more miles used per year. 4061 miles per year average while the Yamaha's has 2500 miles per year average.
It was an interesting little snapshot.
I have had two BMW's without a speck of reliability issues and several friends with no issues. I know that's just anecdotal - and it helps I maintain and farkle my own bikes - but still, I have a rosier view of the brand.
But my kicker is IMO, the BMW suspension (especially the front telelever) is the greatest real world riding conditions suspension system of all time. It inspires great confidence in the twisty mountains I live and ride in - so it is worth the premium - for me.

Absolutely nothing and I do mean nothing beats Honda for reliability and build quality but there’s just something about riding a two wheel German tank……it feels like you could ride it right through hell and back.
I’ve owned a lot of German and Japanese vehicles (cars and bikes)…..really wish they’d get together more and collaborate. Can you imagine BMW ride and handling with Honda reliability and longevity.
I hear guys raving about the Vee Stroms, my Dad was killed on one and I hated the front suspension, absolute garbage. Power was ok but the handling and stability is nothing compared to a GS.

I own a 2005 BMW r1200GS. And some things are true about BMW. Maintenance can be expensive. I had put some money in it, also for tuning. My bike had 100 HP and 115 NM (standard from factory). I tuned it at Tovami in the NL. With some simple things on the dyno like a other exhaust and other air filter and OBD tuning I now got 107 HP and 126,8 NM at the wheel. It runs like hell and its very agressive on the trottle. I tuned it because BMW are running lean on fuel from the factory and I wanted a more snappier trottle response. I got that and with more power. Maintenance wise its indeed a expensive bike. If something happens it will cost you dearly. Now I am looking for another bike, because I have to depend on it (commuting 170 km a day). I have ridden a SuperTen and was very dissapointed in the trottle response, acceleration and some other things that has to do with performance. I understand its not a sportsbike, and I dont want that either, but common, a 1200 cc with factory claimed 110 HP and 114 NM has to run much better then it actually does. I understand that the SuperTen is very reliable, I believe that in a second, its a Yamaha. But it wont be my choice, because there are more alternatives on the market that runs better then the SuperTen, and they are not all European.

Boxer engines can burn oil because of the nature of their position. Horizontal pistons can come to a stop (turned off) in a particular way where oil can enter the cylinder head. Sometimes my Subaru will puff smoke at start up, very rarely. Same with my dads old Bmw R1200RT. I'll have to read more up on it and come back if I need to refute my statement.

since I see that you follow the forums and writing on them, bmw breaks down there are flaws and so on, and no one says how things are with honda, here I will give you an example because I just experienced that, cb 400 nor 900f on both problems chain sliders, nsr 250, cbr 900, varadero and vfr on all of them the windings of the regulator and the battery burned out, unfortunately the engines were in the range of 17 years, so now tell me that it is like a serious company and does not solve such important things, understand that everything has a lot electronics and a lot of possibilities, the chances of bmw breakdowns are higher in such unnecessary things.
