  • The BMW 635d and 640d are both truly superb examples of what a diesel performance car can be, with outstanding daily running practicality in spades, but also tremendous torque and fantastic performance from engines which never feel like they need to work particularly hard to produce these results.
But with each of these generations of diesel 6-Series offering a couple of distinct advantages over the other, such as pricing and the option of 4 doors, which one should you actually go for? Let's head out on the road for this episode of Beards 'n Cars Rivals and find out!

I bought a pristine, one-owner, FBMWSH, low mileage e63 (coupe) 650 with the 4.8l V8 engine several years ago. Having driven Audis for years, I wanted to try a BMW for a while and had it in mind to try it out for a couple of years and then maybe move onto an F-series M6.
I never buy new (because I refuse to lose so much in depreciation) but I don't have a budget restriction for buying cars, so at the time I also looked at XKRs, a DB9 and a 911; admittedly, they were all at least 4 years newer than the 650, but having spent a day testing each of them, I honestly couldn't work out why they were £20k - £50k more than the BMW. The Porsche was better on the track but nowhere near as comfortable for everyday use.
The DB9 was gorgeous, but in almost every other respect, was only 5% better than the 650; certainly not 300% better, as the price difference would suggest.
In the end, I kept the 650 for 6 years. Still have it as one of my cars.
Will probably skip the F-gen 6 series and move straight over to an M8.
But, if the right F-gen M6 happened to come along...

I did 20k miles in a 2007 635d. Upgraded to a 2012 640d. 10k miles done, sold it and got a 2009 facelift 635d with a remap to circa 340bhp, the 2009 is the better car for me. The interior feels more solid, the seats are better. The steering wheel feels high quality, it has the 640d upgraded Nav and I drive, the power and feel is fantastic and it seems smaller And chunkier and stronger. The 640d looked way more expensive but didn’t feel that nice to drive for me, it was slightly better on fuel and would do 50mpg in ecopro at 50mph...but why buy one and drive it like that. Also the 640d had the egr problems and was at bmw for 8 weeks! But a facelift 09 on 635d, remap and look after it. Amazing cars and and easy 32mpg even with a heavy right foot. The 635 also sounds nice, the 640 sounded fake, not sure if they pumped sound through the speakers...mine is a high miler at 170k but is serviced every 5000 miles as it’s cheap to do. This is my daily for a 80 mile commute and the only thing I would change it for is a CL500 4.7 twin turbo blue efficiency. You should do a test on that car. It’s amazing.

I have owned both, the 640 is equipped better with more lux feel, but the E63 feels and looks more special. The 0-60 is 6.1(you stated the time for 100kmh) Also mapping 635 maps to 360hp /680nm and the 640 maps to 400hp. For the price difference I'd take a good spec 635d coupe and tune it / upgrade suspension to have a faster more fun car for half the price. The 640 is great, but not double price great.

I have had my 2010 635d for 5 years now. Oil is changed every 12 months (8,000 miles a year) and now has 104,000 miles on the clock.
Mine has the M57D30TÜ2TOP aluminium engine, the M57 prior to this was made from cast iron. This may be why there are some differences described in the weight of the e63 635d from when it was first introduced.
Mapped to 360bhp with 700 nm of torque about 3 years ago.
32 mpg round town and 53 mpg on a run staying around 60 to 65 mph.
Logic 7 sound system with black interior.
I prefer the shape to the 640d, just my opinion, nothing else.
The inside is very good understated quality, it doesn't show off. I love it.
Handling can be described as not sporty at lower speeds, but it is GT and not a sports car. Get it over 1** and it just hunkers down and sits there, very solidly with little body roll.
Boot is big enough to put an 8 birth airframe tent in and go camping with the dog on the back seat. Only just though! I am 6ft, 17 stone and can sit in the back seat. Again, only just.
Amazing performance, reliability and economy for this kind of car.
If anyone wants to buy one, don't look at the miles, look at the car. Regular oil changes that are at half, or less, than the recommended mileage are a good sign. I will be changing the oil and filter in the gearbox soon. If you see this on a car then that is another sign that a car has been looked after. A clean tidy interior is also a must.
Do your research and wait to find the one you want.
    You wont be disappointed.
Hopefully, fingers crossed, I will still have mine in another 5 years!

Hi mate I've just bought the same year as yours with 67000 miles any advice on what to check on it do you recommend changing anything what's your opinion on a remapping

    • @ChristopherConnor-jl7vt
      @ChristopherConnor-jl7vt Рік тому +1

@@openureyes There are 2 thermostats in the engine that commonly fail around 60 or so thousand miles. When they fail the engine runs cooler and as such cannot get hot enough for the DPF to burn particles off, which results in a blocked DPF.. About 80, 000 miles your glow plug module may fail, when it does, have the glow plugs replaced with good ones, say Beru for example at the same time as the labour for getting to them is where the money goes. Change you oil around every 7, 000 miles. You dont have to go to an expensive garage for this as it is just an oil change. Just make sure it is the right oil going in. A lot of garages use Coma oil as they are one f the only ones who state they will pay for the engine to be replaced if it fails due to a problem with the oil.
Clear the water drain holes regularly. They are under the bonnet near to the windscreen. There is a youtube video on how to do it, takes about 20 minutes . The drain holes block up with dirt and mainly bits of leaves and the water then comes in to the cabin. You first see it in the off side rear passenger footwell. The water does not come from the rear as you might think, but runs down from the front of the car. You will first notice a damp smell and start looking for some spilt drink or food that may have been left under the seats somewhere.
Mapping is a difficult one,. My advice would be to limit the torque to just under 700 nm and the BHP to around 360. You can go way over this if you wish, but you would have to look after it more than you would normally have to. As to where, there are many out there. For me, I decided not to go for a plug in box and had it done through the OBD port. It can be difficult to judge who to choose, especially as many of them come and go. You would have to do your own research to see what is in you area I suppose.
Tyres, I got rid of the run flats on the car when they wore out. I have had michellins and conti sport contact 6's. The contis out do the michellins. Perelli P zeros would be even better as they dont have to warm up to stick to the road. The trade off though is the p zeros wear out quicker.
Cant think of anything else at the moment though.
Just needs to have stuff done when it needs it, except for oil that should be done earlier, that way the engine should not fail at all. I mean for 100's of thousands of miles.

I'm sure engines are stronger and updated interior options are better but they lost their exterior body style. For those that are wondering about power, if youre ok with a DPF delete, 635d should be able to get up to ~400hp and ~750nm comfortably on stock turbos and fueling, provided everything is in good shape. Tho, cp3 r90 hpfp is recommended since it will extend the power band in to higher rpm's, and make it pull pretty much to red line.

    • @Kerman_von_Braun
      @Kerman_von_Braun 3 місяці тому

In theory, its possible to get close to 450bhp on stock turbos, but, youd be pushing the turbos to there absolute limit. And the bi-turbo's are known for having sticky waste gates, so you probably wont be able to push em this hard since they will just overboost and shit there impellers out through the exhaust xD

Seats in the GC seem a bit harder so one gets lame bum fairly quickly. As for handling, the 7 was a bit of a slouch unless you were in sports mode all the time, specially on those windy country roads whereas the 6er sticks like its on rails. If you have them, dump the RF (run flat) tyres for high end non RF, makes a huge difference. Lighter, quieter and the handling phenomenal - far less skittish when cornering.

From my perspective, the E63 is ugly. I just don't like the nose but, I recently saw a completely blacked out version, which I got to say, was not half bad. The F13 is better looking, but kinda boring. I have to say the one that changed the game is the new 8 series G15.

Agreed, the tail is that awful Chris Bangle design. The just plain weird boot looks tacked on and doesn't "flow" with the rest of the car whereas the F06 is gorgeous.

@@boerboel7777 The so called Bangle butt is one of the design cues that make this E63 alluringly timeless. Some say it's gorgeous, others that it's ugly as sin. For me it's just amazingly and timelessly special.
