- The Greek philosopher Plato was a student of Socrates, and teacher of Aristotle. He wrote on a wide variety of topics including Politics, Aesthetics, Cosmology, and Epistemology. To this day, we refer to “Platonic Love” and “Platonic Ideals.” Plato’s search for knowledge and truth formed the basis of much of Western Philosophy.

Good, succinct bio, along with background of his most famous works. True importance & relevance to centuries hence, including our own 21st, not revealed but that would take many additional, in-depth discussions of each. Of course, Plato's founding of the Academy was a milestone in western civilization, giving birth to what generally became the universities we know so well today, though much de-valued and politically-biased.This is a nice, broad overview of the philosopher's life, which is what I was searching for, prior to tackling his actual works. I wanted to understand the man's place in his historical context, influences, what made him "tick", etc. Instructor clear & straightforward, easy to comprehend, without hyper-paced or gimmicky video-effects, so prevalent & tiresome in the vast majority of modern presentations. Thanks!
Hi Socratica ! I saw your videos on aristotle, socrates and others. They are great and fun watching them. At that time, when rome and greek were developing philosophy, India was developing in astronomy (calculating lunar and solar eclipse) and charak (he did first dissection). I would love if you can cast some light on these great people as well.

The theory of forms is definitely at the heart of playdough-nism.
Any kid at pre-school can tell you that. They carry this knowledge forward with them from earlier lives - which is an indication that this philosopher believed in re-incarnation, a process by which various bits of personally-collected, or personally-marked, sticks and sand and stuff remain contained within the dough even through many iterations of re-moulding, in which basically, the original dough has already mostly dehydrated and gotten dry and small and hard, but then as it is left lying around in some warm dark place, starts to ferment, and spores grow in it, and it turns into a large-again, new heap of pliable mould.
However, the 'forms' themselves, are usually in a different place, where the teacher has stacked them up in some dedicated drawer or something. And cleaned them, prior to putting them away. Those are the 'forms.' Which are different to all the mould. The fact is, both the mould and the forms are both likely made from petrochemical by-products, but according to Playdough (Registered Trademark), the mould is more of a pliable type of plastic stuff, whereas the forms are like ABS thermoplastic and are very rigid and never change. Indeed, whoever the German designer was who thought of the actual shapes themselves, has those drawings somewhere else altogether, prolly on the outside of the Chinese factory in which the manufactured forms are made.
Note: even though Playdough the inventor himself is very ancient, you can still get all the manuals, cheaply from a publishing house called 'Penguin Classics.' And from other places too. Some people are considered collectors of Playdough, and they have things like 'the Jowett Translation' in original hardback or even First Edition. But mostly, in the recent past history of say, three hundred years, such people were called Syndics, and went around with long faces because the English stole all their manuals and took them to these caves where ignorant savages lived, called 'Oxford' and 'Cambridge.' And those ignorant savages can still be found in those caves till this day.

what is the name of that pretty lady giving these mini-lectures? she is great. i would have loved to have her be my teacher during my student days. in any case, i hope that she goes on to give lectures on many other philosophers, not only the Big Three (Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle) which she has already done, but also on some of the others, such as Baruch Spinoza, Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, David Hume, Adam Smith, Edmund Burke, John Stuart Mill, and Bertrand Russell. she might also consider giving such talks on some of Shakespeare's most important plays, such as the Big Seven (Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, MacBeth, and Anthony and Cleopatra)
