Lot of challenges. We take for granted much of the urban convenience. They have it tough. Have no established roads. It's by memory I suppose. You have a certain amount of light. Alaska has a lot of wild animals. You have to be ready. Then the ice and water. Snow. Wind. It's real nature. We haven't covered waste. HVAC. Insulation. Wow. It's a lot to consider. And I'm amazed they battle that for whole seasons. Unassisted largely. Few technologies. Snowmobile is big time. Imagine trekking that and trapping without it. Impossible! Humans in our time would fall apart. I love watching these. This is real survival. What it takes.

Heimo? That's a finnish name.. it can also be translated to "tribe" in english..

@@einienj3281 The name Heimo is of Old High German origin and is considered a short form of names that begin with “Heim-“...From heimo ("tribe, family"), found as a latter part in pre-Christian names such as Ikäheimo. May also derive from a Middle Low German form of Henry. Revived in the 19th century. Since he is German and the name is both Finnish and German I would think it is the German form and not Finnish.

@@82delta sure, we might have gotten it from Germany, It's just I've never come across a German person called Heimo before, lots of finns though.. and it has a very, very long history here too.. so basically they are the same in both languages, that's pretty cool..

I once did a lot of spear fishing through the ice and the best ice chisel I ever had was custom made by a friend who was a welder. It had two teeth that were cut into a heavy duty leaf spring with an inch diameter, five feet long rod steel handle . I used it all the time to test ice thickness and to make spear holes. I could always make a 2 by 3 foot hole in a few feet of ice before most people could saw a hole using chainsaws. The curvature of the spring steel and those long teeth cut into it sent the ice flying out of the hole in big chunks. I'm surprised to see these guys swinging axes, or regular ice chisels to test ice and chop holes.
