Despite this being a recap episode with sprinkled lore I actually really liked seeing all the important fight scene moments. It made me realize that the Prince’s Rose is the White rose, and when Utena loses she doesn’t get the White rose anymore, but a Pink rose. But Touga doesn’t get the White rose when he wins, he isn’t the Rose Bride’s Prince.
oh cool- I hadn't noticed the rose color shift for Utena until you called attention to it! Where does the prince show a white rose here? Is that the thing he's sitting on?
I think the first duel was called Amitei because Utena's reason for fighting was friendship with Anthy. The second duel was Choix because Utena made the choice to rescue Anthy from Saonji's cruel "ownership." The third was called Raison because Miki was fighting for his reason to live-- his "shining thing," which he hoped to find in Anthy. The second was Amour because Jury was fighting due to ruined love and the bitterness resulting from it. Alternatively, it could be called "love" because Anthy showed her love for Utena by making the miracle occur (having the sword skewer Jury's rose as it fell). Adoration refers to Nanami's brother complex. :P The next battle, Conviction, was so named because of Utena's strong determination to protect Anthy, although she ended up losing. The final duel was named Soi because Utena fought for her sense of self, for her identity as a female "prince" and protector of Anthy. Also, a note on character colors and rose meanings in Hanakotoba: Red: Love. Touga is driven by love (for power perhaps, or a sick sort of love for Anthy?). Jury's orange rose could be a shade of red, love, or could be related to the peach rose, which is associated with pride. Yellow: jealousy. Well, we all know why Nanami's rose is yellow. :P Blue: Accurate information was difficult to find, but it seems Blue Roses can represent intelligence, hope, or unattainable dreams. Any of those fit with Miki. His hope in finding his shining thing, his dream being unattainable, and his notable intelligence. Green: actually, green roses have no known meaning in Hanakotoba. Finally, White: purity, purity of feelings, devotion. Utena's feelings of love for Anthy.
Lynne O While I think you're on the money with the duels, the colour symbolism in the show seems to align more closely to the virtues and divine powers associated with the Tree of Life in the Jewish Kabbalistic tradition: Green with the sphere of victory, which sometimes is interpreted more liberally as "perdurance" or "eternity;" blue with compassion or mercy; orange with "splendour," which really is more like "enlightenment" or the illumination of the righteous path; yellow (and sometimes pink!) with "beauty" in the sense of balance and "rightness" with the world; red with strength of will; and purple with the meeting of the physical world with the spiritual. The Black Rose Saga makes some of this even more explicit, what with Mikage's dilemma and the association of black with the sphere of understanding and the seeking of wisdom, and then you have white and grey representing the pure essence of the divine and its interactions with the rest of the Tree respectively... it's all a lot to unpack. Heck, the Tree of Life shows up in this episode in the stained glass!
the only anime I've ever seen where I love the recap episodes so much that I go back to revisit them even when i'm not in the middle of the series. touga's self-isolation with that tape on loop is such a powerful scene
Joce Lopez-Valesquez Those women come and go. They aren't really that important to him. Nanami being his sister gives her a better connection than any girl Touga sleeps with.
this is honestly the best arc and ending it with a recap episode of all the good fights is actually a pretty good way to end the season especially considering all the craft and care that went into these fights.
Heard it was a recap episode mixed with lore, so I played it at 2x speed and let me tell you it reads so much like a UA-cam poop, folks. Absolutely recommend the experience at least once.
Nah, the whole series has repetitive scenes. They already were low budget. This was like the cheesy sitcom clips show, where they set up a plot that requires them to revisit the series thus far.
Does anyone know which meaning of reason "raison" is supposed to translate to? Reason as in logic, or reason as in 'purpose'. Or is the ambiguity intentional?
It refers to Miki trying to use reason to win Anthy, AKA using reason to persuade girls to be with you. Miki is presented as a character who's really good at math and who corrects Anthy's math test (overriding her logic with his).
its not.... there's like a few minutes of new animation, especially because we are introduced to a brand new character, so how could it be reuse from beginning to end? Its 100% a recap episode tho
Nobody is a literal "prince" or "princess" in this show, they're just cultural shorthands for the general ideas of traditional romanticized ideas of masculinity and femininity, which are both harshly criticized in their own right by the show itself, and utterly abused by Akio in the later episodes for his own personal gain. Utena tries to be a prince for most of the show, stumbles a bit and almost becomes a princess near the end, and in the final episode ultimately disappears because she was trying to hold onto the childish idea of a "prince" in a world that's fundamentally incompatible with that concept once you're exposed to the adult world.
tbh idk if anyone ever see this comment but. i have a question to ask : 1. is this series really a gl series? cause i know im being impatient but i've watched the series till ep 11 and ngl, there's no flavour in Anthy and Utena's relationship and im almost droped it.
Super late reply but if you’re looking for a straight up love story with cute romantic moments then this is going to be a disappointment upon your first watch lol. It’s a deeply psychological show where the characters’ motivations aren’t revealed until late in the game. And, if you don’t mind light spoilers, Anthy and Utena’s relationship isn’t shown to be explicitly romantic until the movie. If that turns you off from the series I don’t blame you, but it really is interesting and I hope that you continued to watch it!
gotta love a recap-blended-with-lore-so-you-have-to-watch-the-episode episode.
😩

I really appreciate the way the duelling theme changes each time, often in a way that relates to the specific duel. that “AM-MO-NITE!” goes so hard
I think the first duel was called Amitei because Utena's reason for fighting was friendship with Anthy. The second duel was Choix because Utena made the choice to rescue Anthy from Saonji's cruel "ownership." I think Touga is more so a manipulator of love. :/
Red is also used to symbolize ambition and (usually sexual) power. In the past I've heard of blue roses being used to symbolize fantasy.
I thought the first duel was because Saionji made Wakaba cry by cruelly mocking her feelings for him.
Lynne O What does the pink rose mean? And the black/purple one at the end?
3:50 WHOA, this guy showed up sooner than I expected him to!
Why doesn't Nanami get pissed at other girls if her brother was such a playboy?
Joce Lopez-Valesquez Those women come and go. They aren't really that important to him. Nanami being his sister gives her a better connection than any girl Touga sleeps with.

me: ahaha filler recap ep
the ep: symbolism, little plot sprinkled in, lore even!
me: wait wtf slow down back up who is this guy
Your order, sir -- recap with a side of WTF.
It's interesting how they didn't use the same voice acting clips for the recaps.
Heard it was a recap episode mixed with lore, so I played it at 2x speed and let me tell you it reads so much like a UA-cam poop, folks. Absolutely recommend the experience at least once.
Anthy getting bitch slapped in 2x speed with the chaotic singing in the background is way funnier than it should be
this recap is killin me smalls.
Anyone notice the white rose being used like a censor bar?
+Vanessa Rodriguez I don't think it's a censor bar, but I'm not sure though. I really don't see why they'd censor most of the scenes really.
Apparently it's not being used to censor anything. It's symbolic (all the roses are). If I remember correctly, white roses symbolize rebirth
Some moments are framed with roses, presumably as a way of "underlining" them.
Did anyone else notice at around 5:40 Anthy’s dress looks like a rose petal?
THE ROSES ARE YELLOW NOW
Well this is getting good quickly
The opening is a vibe
Is this the 'we ran out of budget' episode?
+Th3SmartAlec It's art, not how much money can we spend.
Nah, the whole series has repetitive scenes. They already were low budget. This was like the cheesy sitcom clips show, where they set up a plot that requires them to revisit the series thus far.
Its not that Utena had a low budget, it's just that most of it went towards the OST
in utena, recaps are not recaps, they're fundamental plot and character development
Ok but the UFO.
I like listening to this episode while I drive, for the fight music
That hair at the beginning I know that hair!!!
It is taking a lot of strength for me not to skip this episode
It's ok because it was a lot of information and so much foreshadowing that I had to rewatch the entire series multiple times just to understand
The animation is really good, though.
Huge pity there arent other episodes on the internet nowadays... I cant watch this masterpiece T-T
But she lost her first duel against Touga, why was she counted as winning that? The third duel with green is also missing, but that was unscheduled.
Thanks for uploading the new episodes!
20:38 Oh hell nah. What’s she doing here?
Is that Mickey's sister?
I'm assuming this is a season finale.
babyEroose Yes this is the end of the first arc. The series continues on!
babyEroose there is only 1 season but three story arcs throughout
God this keeps getting more based and epic.
19:07 The exact moment when Nanami lost all redemption for me
Same
It the repetition of the eggs shell line supposed to be a reference to how much they repeated it in the show?
And here folks we have the filler episode
Does anyone know which meaning of reason "raison" is supposed to translate to? Reason as in logic, or reason as in 'purpose'. Or is the ambiguity intentional?
+tangent94 usually you use it as in "raison d'être" which is closer to the latter; it literally means "reason to exist"
I wouldn't doubt that ambiguity is intended--you get a lot of that in Japanese culture.
It refers to Miki trying to use reason to win Anthy, AKA using reason to persuade girls to be with you. Miki is presented as a character who's really good at math and who corrects Anthy's math test (overriding her logic with his).
WILL ME FINALLY KNOW WHO THE PRINCE WHO MADE UTENA THE ABSOLUE GIRLBOSS SHE IS, IS/!??! WATCH EP __ NEXT WEEK TO FIND OUT!!
What is the name of the soundtrack in minute 20:35?
少女革命ウテナは決闘を怪しい黒バラの対決そして新たな闘いこんどのはなしはデイオスとの対決アンシーちやんあきおには辛い結末と噂
My question is were they censoring something at 11:41??
maybe they used the flower as some metaphorical thing, rather than censorship
That meaning she gets blessing and strength from the prince
Revolutionary girl Utena amv the episode lmao
is this just a recap on the last episodes?
No. It reveals some important things.
wow this is pure reuse all the scenes from beginning to end so we can have this episode. lol
its not.... there's like a few minutes of new animation, especially because we are introduced to a brand new character, so how could it be reuse from beginning to end? Its 100% a recap episode tho
変態の世界ですね。
there's something I still don't get.Is she a princess or not
Anime Lover she isn't
Well those are some conflicting g opinions right there
Can you be a prince AND a princess? (The show's big question!)
@@irisofrosebloom8741 I love this show so much.

Yea but it happens later

just incase you're wondering. i just skipped through this episode little by little. you dont need to watch this episode, its just a recap.
Why wouldn't you watch it? It's really good and there's plenty of brand new material in it.. I really enjoyed it
Yes but there’s plot in the recap that’s needed for later
You missed stuff, then
Recap episode. Nope.
