They do it in the manga, too. I don’t like it. It’s so antithetical to her character. She’s all about *unrequited* love. That makes sense with Shiori. With Touga? How am I supposed to believe that two wealthy popular kids are star-crossed lovers? I always like to pretend that the “love” here is a reference to the boy who drowned heroically rescuing another kid. Juri mentions this kid in the show and, in the movie, Touga is cast as the boy. Juri’s surname has etymological connections to rivers… it all fits. So yeah, whenever I see them rewriting Juri as into Touga I just try to think about her being attached to him through that platonic lens. It makes it easier for me to work what I’m seeing and reading into the larger Utena narrative, of which Juri is basically always gay.
@@marrusorthocanna1897 Yeah, *but* it is worth noting that the manga was written by Chiho Saito. She also worked on the show as an artist. However, while she has re-iterated her tolerance for homosexual relationships, she was skeptical of Ikuhara’s decision to include WLW relationships in the show. Her perspective was that the show was for *girls,* and *most girls are straight,* so making characters canonically gay would disassociate the audience from the characters. And, thus, the general anti-gender role message. She even threatened to leave the show’s team if Ikuhara pushed the matter in the show. That’s partially why the show relies on subtext and the movie is explicit - Ikuhara was willing to compromise artistically because he valued Chiho’s artistry. All of this is to say that Chiho clearly had a vision for the show that differs from Ikuhara. She wasn’t cool with canonical on-screen gayness in the show, and so it makes sense that she would retroactively censor things in her manga re-telling. I don’t agree with her artist decisions - and I suspect most would agree with me - but I still respect her. She is an accomplished professional woman and artist during a difficult period in Japan’s modern history. You gotta give her props for trying to make something aesthetically engaging for girls. However, I think the message of the story is the same, regardless of how you read the nature of the dyad. Like, Juri *cares* about people like Touga. I think that’s the main takeaway. Regardless of whether it’s platonic or because he was the drowned boy or it’s romantic or whatever. The *point* is that she’s more tenderhearted than she seems.

Yeah, the musical was basically the anime if it was just season 1 with a random Akio cameo at one point.
