allie: so i'm gonna talk spoilers now. me: should i skip? im 200 pages in,, surely its not that bad. allie: *biggest spoiler i never expected* me: ......i'll go cry now
Do you think I should left more time in between the warning and the spoiler?? I’m still trying to figure out how to do spoilers and all that 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
*SPOILER* This is my favorite book of all time... It is the most beautifully written, heartbreaking book I have ever read. Not a lot of books can invoke such strong feelings from me. This isn’t an easy read in terms of both literature and content. It took me six months to finish, as I wanted to savor each moment. A lot of people like to label this as trauma porn, but it is so much more meaningful. If you've ever experienced some of these traumas or forms of abuse, I can guarantee you will understand that these are real things that happen to real people- and the realistic struggle on how people cope with it. Or you may know someone who has had the same outcome. To me it is illuminating, I can relate to Jude in some ways and I have so much love for him. There were so many moments where I just wanted to reach out to Jude and comfort him whenever he had his bad thoughts. Though he had to deal with his trauma for years, I’m even more moved by the support system he had for over 30 years or so- Who were so loyal and loving to him, who just wanted to see him get better. This book taught me a lot about family and friendship values that made me happy, knowing that Jude got through more years than he would have if he didn't have that support from them. I fell in love with all of the characters as if they were my own family. It's all written in the most impressive prose. I will never come across another book like this. I have such a strong bond with all the boys and others. It took my breath away.
Ngl as a chronically suicidal person I could not feel more opposite. Not trying to discredit your take, but like honestly, trauma porn is a pretty fitting descriptor considering the book really doesn't have much to offer the reader except strong emotional reactions, decidedly separate from the legitimately traumatizing suicidal ideation of the book. The characters barely have actual development, most of which are hollow half ideas for characters that entirely revolve around Jude and his emotions.Yanigahara herself admits she did zero research on mental illness, self harm or trauma and it kinda shows. There was a point in Judes back story where the same traumatic events play out at the hands of like 4 different characters who all don't know each other and I was just like... this is just not realistic. And moreover, the gratuitously descriptive scenes of cutting, and the whole end notion of like "poor sweet angel Jude, at least he's finally at peace 🥹" is comparable to 13 Reasons why in terms of tactless, straight up DANGEROUS depictions of suicide for the sole purpose of making teen girls cry in their bedrooms. Watch any interview with Hanya on how she wrote this book and hopefully you'll start to see what I mean, but yeah, I would highly advise against reading this if you've been in the same emotional space the characters are meant to represent.
Oo new book channel, i love that you said at the start you don’t like sad books and choose a sad book, i do like sad books but i prefer good endings where a natural conclusion is made whether that is sad or not.
*spoiler* You said that you wanted an explanation why the book is written in the way that it is and there is one. Harold is the one who gets the booklet with al the little stories about Jude's his life. Starting at Lispenard street. (At the very end it said: you jumped of the roof?! “It’s a good story, I’ll tell you” Harold:Please. And he did.)From that part of Jude’s life Harold gets to hear the story and there are parts where he is involved himself so that explains the way it is written. Also Harold and Julia took multiple days to read the booklet of stories due to the fact that it was just to much, just like is was done in the book itself. This is my view on the matter, please let me know what you think and great video btw 🥰
It wasn’t a booklet, It was a letter that he hid for Harold and Julia in the bookshelf after his adoption ❤️ was finalized, it was intended for them to find it when they find it and then the book is Harold’s explanation of judes life
Loved this video! You edit so well!! I've re-read A Little Life once, and I swore I'd never read it again after the second time. Then I saw the stage adaptation in London this summer and now I feel like I need to read it again!
@@alliestephenson When I say there wasn't a dry eye in the house I'm not exaggerating. Several people ran out crying halfway through & I sobbed on the tube home 😂 unrelated but I have just binged every video on your channel 🤍

It’s an extremely heavy novel so I’d say 18+. I also recommend that you be in a good headspace before starting! I read it at 22 and want to read it again now at 24. It’s one of my favorites!
SPOILER ‼️ “if you don’t want to hear a spoiler skip this part” me: panically looking for my phone-“WILLIAM DYING” i’ve learned to just not look online about a book because i always get spoiled
We do not have to like all the characters in a piece of fiction ... they are as the author intended them to be ... who knows? We may not like them as perhaps their flaws are too close to ones we ourselves carry.
It’s not a five because you want to throw it across the room. I mean it’s such a messed up book because ultimately her message is that for some people, life is hopeless. I’m not saying this is not true for some people but when the choice is darkness instead of light, all the profundity adds up to nothing. BTW, the author said that this book was a kind of fairy tale/ fantasy, as unrealistic as you can get, kind of book, so it’s really messed up that she kind of make it seem so real. So despite her very beautiful writing, the message she leaves you with just kind of kills your soul. Therefore it’s in my opinion not what a good book should be doing and therefore I think she’s kind of a terrible writer who has used her talent to create terrible messaging out into this world.
Caleb could fall into lava for all I care
It’s been 3 years since I’ve read it and I miss every single one of these characters. Such powerful writing!
Ik! Sometimes my heart will ache thinking about them like they were real ppl in my life! It’s crazy 😢
