  • Lucas Maassen is known for his ironic, almost anarchistic view on design. He started his career by making non-functional chairs, like the nano chair, that is so small that it can only be seen through a an electron microscope, or his sitting chairs that sit but cannot be sat on.
In 2011, his 'singing chair' was part of an exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, stating that it was time to stop talking about chairs, and let them talk back to us.
Basically, Maassens work can be seen as a critique on the role of the designer in a world of abundance.
Maassen believes that in the post-digital era, creating 'tools to design with' will become more important than designing the actual object. He is now developing a tool that can turn thoughts into designs.
Recently, Maassen completed another family project. He teamed up with a pharmaceutical company that helped him to turn his parents DNA into a chandelier.
