Are you specifically talking about the music side or also the corporate/live event side of the audio industry??? It's very tough know whether to make the investment in schooling or to just learn on your own while making connections.
I just did my own research. The music studio side of audio is a waste of time. Live event audio and conference systems is where the real careers are made.

as a younger engineer and others as well would you recommend living in places like NY or California because of the "healthier" job market just to have a much easier time getting your first few jobs?
In the past, yes. Right now, and going forward from here? It's much harder to say. So much work is remote now. That trend was already in motion, but recent events have only accelerated it even faster than I expected.
