Falconry: How to best prepare for training a Golden Eagle

- This video describes the best ways to prepare for training a golden eagle for the first time. Current laws in the USA are aimed at making sure a new eagle trainer is experienced with large species. But size is far from the only consideration when someone is mentally preparing for training an eagle. This video addresses these other areas.
Not gonna lie, my favorite parts of Ben's videos is when he mimics what a hoity toity might sound like. :)

Ben, as I begin this journey I have found your videos most informative, enjoyable and insightful. The way you described the Eagle culture in the US is exactly how I am finding ALL Falconers I have encountered. This is most unfortunate. I am in awe of their dedication and hardwork and I understand that the majority of wanna be's never make it and waste valuable time of the GF or MF but damn!. I hunted with a poor Pakistani farmer who hunted with his Saker and was as humble as anyman I know, He lit my fire for this sport, while most of the Falconers I have met are intent on stamping it out with obnoxiousness.
BT Akin sadly this is often true. Perhaps the best thing to do is to try to be the kind of falconer you wish that all falconers were. And hopefully it slowly changes the culture. But there is no question that with falconry comes some mighty big egos.

Thank you Ben, this video is perfect! I’ve been searching for this information for months now. Getting my mews signed off from fish and wildlife this month to start on my falconry journey. The 7 year goal is to hunt with a Golden Eagle. Currently starting the training process at a raptor rehab center in northern CA this month. Any additional advice on Golden Eagles is greatly appreciated. Again, great video, thank you so much!

I'm gonna be at least 30 by the time I can be fully licensed to work with a golden eagle.... Oof gonna get started on that

I think that'd be a heck of a challenge... every state, province, and region is going to be different.
I would really like to know more about vultures in falconry.
Taylor Harricharan old world vultures are flown extensively using falconry techniques, though they are not used for actual hunting. New world vultures are quite different in their mentality. New world vultures are actually related to storks. And as such their thinking and training are a bit different. But they are still trained for education using falconry techniques. One of the trickiest things is that new world vultures practice urohidrosis and defecate on their own legs to cool off. This means their jesses wear out quickly and have to be changed regularly. I could definitely do a video on working with vultures though if there is interest, and give more details.
Ben Woodruff, That would be amazing. I think that they are very beautiful birds and I think the information on there use in falconry is very limited. Any light that you can shed on them would be wonderful.
Ben Woodruff definitely do some blvuture videos! What were the old world ones flown for using falconry techniques if. It for hunting??? I remember you said goshawks can be referred to as buzzards in Europe...
When our family had a parakeet, it had a cuttlebone to keep it's beek from overgrowing. Do eagles have the same problem?
Ernest Miller after every meal, birds of prey rub both sides of their beak on their Pearce to clean and help sharpen it. This is called feaking. But captive birds of prey typically have a richer diet and less physical demands, so their beaks can get overgrown. We use files or a dremel tool to get them to the proper shape and size, also on the talons. This is called coping and has to be done 2-3 times a year.

Watching this made me think 'would a Haas's Eagle be a good falconry bird? or is it so big that it would be too dangerous to try fly'? It's a long time sence you did a prehistoric animal video I thought it would be a cool Idea.
c0dy85 if they were still around, it would be possible, in theory. But risky. The Maori have legit oral histories of individuals who were eaten by Haast’s eagles only 3-4 generations back. And Haast’s eagles hunted Moas, which were much larger than us. So training one would have been extremely risky. But on the other hand, I have a friend who trains bears and lions and cougars etc for movies. So potential danger is clearly only one of the factors. Would have been so cool to see one of them alive!!
I thought it took years to establish a relationship with a bird of prey and you seem pretty young how do you have so many different types of birds do you work with more than one a day for extended periods? Is it something that only takes years if you don’t have full time access so it could be done with intensive time in a few months like if that was your only job?
I started falconry literally as a child and pursued it with all my heart. I took every opportunity to learn all I could. Most people get started much later in life, so I had some extra years there. But then I got into wildlife education as well and began to train birds for this purpose in addition to falconry. I started a non profit org and for years gave presentations all over Utah. I helped with several wildlife rehabilitators and helped zoos with coping beaks and talons of eagles and hawks and making proper eagle equipment. So instead of a hobby, it has been a way of life, and for many years also a job. So that is why I have an oddly diverse range of experience.
I'm looking at starting to get into falconry and gathering as much information as possible so that I feel more than ready for when I start however I would love to move towards eagle falconry as quickly as possible. Now I would prefer a bald myself but Golden isn't out of the question either. While I realize that balds are more fish hunting birds, I have also learned that they can be trained to hunt rabbit, fox, wolves, etc.
My only question is how you mention that balds have the tendency to nip/bite. With the tricks you mention with rubbing that beak? does that ever go away or that's a bird to bird difference since they are all different from one another.

Martin Tyner is my hero. He calls his Golden Eagle, "Scout" one of his best friends. he helped make the laws reguarding flying Eagles and was the first in the USA to do it. I always try to include a link to his channel.His wildlife rehab is nominated for the Indianapolis Prize. Maybe if enough people know how great he is, he will win. He's earned it.

Could you elaborate on why goshawks and furgies are important I’m flying my first imprint Goshawk a golden eagle is on my bucket list, so at some point it will happen. I love my Gos he is so intense and gamey. I kinda got and idea why you should fly those two birds. But I’m sure I’m missing a lot.
Really it is about the mentality. I have trained eagles male and female, imprint, passage, and adult , for falconry and for education and for helping zoos. And Even though an eagle is very much its own thing, the closest way to understand their thoughts and actions, reactions, handling, bating, hunting aggression, is really like combining an imprint gos, and an imprint ferrugie and a passage ferrugie. I have talked to other Eagle trainers who have had one or two eagles and said it was just like having a big red tail. But my experience has. It been that. Let me maybe phrase it a different way. When trouble shooting and working through problems with eagles, the answer was almost always the exact same as what it was for an imprint gos or a ferrugie. Obviously there is no perfect way to prepare and people will always have different opinions, but I genuinely can say that these two species will prepare you for the mind of an eagle.
