I’m a falconer and this is a good intro for people wanting to get started. Finding a sponsor really isn’t difficult find your state hawking club and go to one of the meets. If a falconer sees your passion he would love to take you on. If I seen dedication and passion I would sponsor someone eventually 😃
During my time deployed in the Army, our Afghani translator was a master falconer. He owned 2 Laggar Falcons. He was able to bring them out a couple times and show them off. Gorgeous birds and a lovely trade. He was able to get out of Afghanistan and into the United States when we pulled out of the operation. He now lives here in the US, in western Texas. He could not bring his falcons sadly but is getting into American Falconry. Unfortunately the US standards and Afghani standards are quite different. The good news is he already knows the puzzle and how it goes together with animal husbandry and housing. So I think he'll do just fine.
I'm in Utah and that was my favorite book series. Thats why I am watching this video. I remember asking my dad when I was a kid how I could get a falcon. Now 25ish years later here I am watching videos on how to get into falconry. I even got my daughter to read the books.
My grandma got me the my side of the mountain trilogy when I was in 1st grade. I thought the same thing, that it would suck. But I read it and it blew my mind. I was obsessed with everything he did, even the acorn pancakes he would make, I would always try to convince my mom to let me make them. I’m 13 now and my dad found an introduction to falconry course coming up in August, it’s all day and you actually get to train with the falcons. Just hoping I can get into the sport, it’s been my dream.
The image of a hunter with a trained bird has always been a haunting and eerie image. There’s something much colder and cut throat in that than another animal like a dog.
I love animals, and I just recently started watching videos on Falconry. It's something I'd really love to get into! I Dont think I'll be able to do it tho.. I live in Las Vegas, and in an apartment none the less. Maybe I can find a way to do it, I'll just have to do some research and see what I can make out of it.

Been looking for a nearby sponsor, but the closest I can find for longwinging is probably a 10 hr drive from home and... I don't have the real stability to go out there health-wise. Gotta take care of a lot at home, but dang... One of my biggest goals in life is to get my mastery and an eagle to hunt.
I'm 16, and I absolutely LOVE birds. My grandfather is also a huge birder. Now that I know I need a sponsor, I am thinking I could ask my grandfather to be my sponsor. I do not plan to "mooch" off my grandparents, instead I will do my best to carefully keep, tend, care, and hunt with these beautiful birds.
I love falconry so much and I'm a 13 year old teenager so please don't stop making videos I can't find another falconry channel on UA-cam so if I'm bored I go straight to your channel to have fun 😄😄😄😄😄
@@Seanph25 It is for me at least, for the time being. When I was a kid, I had enough spare time to do this because my responsivities were fewer. Now being married with 2 kids in the house, a full time job, starting a side business, training my dogs, taking care of things around the house (about to replace 250 feet of fencing including digging post holes)...the free time just doesn't exist to fairly house a bird or be able to fly them enough to be fair to the bird. @@Seanph25 True, and that's my attitude and end goal. Currently between a full time job, side business, homeowner, husband, father and everything we want to do to keep our daughter engaged with sports and extra-curricular activities, and our Goddaughter moving in in about 6 weeks for college, training my dogs, and caring for everything around the house (repairs, upgrades, well manicured lawn, etc.), I just don't have the time to spend to hunt a bird enough to be fair to the bird. I'm about to renovate my home office, and it will be plastered with various falconry bird photos. I do plan on spending time during hunting season going out with falconers on hunts to fully learn what all is included in hunting caring for and hunting birds enough to be fair. There's a game warden that's agreed to take me out that has 2 RTH.
I also got into falconry by reading My side of the mountain. It's interesting cuz I'm 56 years old. You look a lot younger than me and yet we both read the same book that got us both into falconry
Can make a video explaining in depth the process of managing a raptors weight and how u go about doing it. I’m planning on taking on falconry and am still very confused on this topic. Thx
The steps in the first 2min are correct, the the order of the steps can vary from state to state. In TX, you have to have a sponsor before you can take the test or have your equipment/facilities inspected. (Not sure why they do it this way as opposed to how other states do it where you have to have all 3, order doesn't matter).
Could anyone describe their typical daily routine with their bird? I want to know if I have the time and maturity to make that commitment. For context, I am a full time student working a part time job and I plan on graduating from college in 2021.
I love birds of prey and want to be a falconer, however I am 13 years old and my parents dont want to keep a hawk or something so is there any way i could train for falconry without having to keep the falcon in my own house? (Like do i train with a bird at the falconers place or do I have to keep a bird at my house?)
Big fan of falconery here... however I live in France and I don't a thing about the status of a falconer in this country Could someone give me info if you have some
so during the 2 year sponsor phase as well as the 2 year apprentice what is it your actually doing during that time, is it a constant job/school like thing or just on the weekends you go do stuff?
Two questions. How do you have the time to do falconry (especially if you work or study) Secondly, have you ever thought of doing falconry in another country ? I know it’s historically practiced in Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East. Nice video btw.
That’s the biggest challenge every falconer seems to face, making the proper time that the sport requires while keeping a healthy balance of work, family, etc. But where there’s a will there’s a way, everybody’s recipe is different!
I want to become a falconer, but I want to join the air force first, so I need to wait until after that, but that gives me plenty of time to study for the test at least
So I have a question: When you get a sponsor, what is that sponsor required to do. Is there a certain amount of time he must sponsor you before you can actually get an apprentice license. Because From what I’ve studied, you receive your apprentice license before the end of that 2 years with a sponsor, correct? So basically what I’m asking is what is the sponsor required to do before he can send a letter into the department so you can receive your apprentice license? I hope this made sense😂
I’m 14 My parents are emailing the people at the Pennsylvania Falconry and Hawk trust to make sure someone is willing to sponsor me before o take the test and make sure a sponsor lives kinda close
Falconry Told thanks My dad agreed even though he as against it he said if I want to do it they had he’ll help me any way he can but I still have to wait til I move I just want someone to buy my house already!!!!😱
Kestrels can be challenging as a first bird to find safe success in because their tiny size requires a solid understanding of raptor weight management on a micro level. Red tails are far easier to find success with as a beginning falconer.

@Plethera I am seriously considering it, I have only heard good things about falconry in California. If my house in Paradise didn't burn down I would still be there. Would be awesome to have a mew ready and a sponsor next year before season allows capture
@Plethera I have family in Oregon, and I contacted multiple falconers just to see if I could connect with someone in the area. Also received no reply back just like Washington. Idaho Falconers are the only group I have found that even respond or show an interest in looking to pass on the legacy but I do not plan on living in Idaho. Would like to eventually move back to Northern California and find some friends that are already into falconry. Being able to get ahold of someone from an association or just find out when a meeting is for some states seems to be a big issue within the sport here in the US, not sure the USFW did us all favors on the requirements or capability to get into the sport. I'm willing to put in the time to become a falconer, Im in it for the long term and I feel motivated to do it and pass on the sport to the next generation (I would hope to someday sponsor others). Especially after struggling so hard to find "the right sponsor". Any advice is always appreciated.
@Plethera Agreed! Great to hear your pursuing the sport. I've been studying the modern apprentice and falconry books for some time now. I have had falconers helping but no sponsorship offers to be found. Passed e exam but despite what I've been told I think the sponsorship comes first. We have to stay in contact. You might be a general falconer before me lol (in the middle of selling a home) However I do have a quail farm so I could technically be a falconers best friend by default. Looking at either Northern California or Oregon. However Falconry could definitely influence the move and location depending on the opportunity.
