Percentage errors in the Simple Pendulum Equation

  • Exercise 8.1 - Question 6 from Chapter 8 of "Mathematics XII - Volume I and II", Tamil Nadu State Board.
    Question 6:
    The time T, taken for a complete oscillation of a single pendulum with length l, is given by the equation T = 2 (pi) sqrt(l/g), where g is a constant. Find the approximate percentage error in the calculated value of T corresponding to an error of 2 percent in the value of l.
    From the question, we have dl/l = 0.02. To get the percentage error of T, simply find dT/T * 100. Take natural log on both sides of the function and differentiate to find the quantity dT/T. Substitute the value of dl/l and multiply by 100.
