Davy's little newsboy cap was even available, as were their belts and boots! Cool, mod shirts and flared pants! Ooh! That was the year I got my white go-go boots for Christmas!! Best Christmas I remember, as I also got a tambourine!
As a child I was convinced that "Mary Mary" was actually called "Hairy Mary". I had this impression of a wild-haired, counter-cultural woman for some reason. "I'm a Believer" takes me back to childhood as well. In my case, it reminds me of the Gold Coast which is a beach resort near here. When I think of those childhood holidays there, that song and a few others stand out. Cheers.

Have to agree with you... In Donnie $$$-for-eyes' rush to get another album to market, he scraped the bottom of the recordings barrel. Just a handful of rich n' creamy songs rose to the top. I love Steppin' Stone and She, and I'm a big Michael Nesmith fan, always enjoy his songs, pre-, during, and especially post-Monkees. His country-rock sound kept his Monkees tunes feeling fresh and not dated. I was 7 when the Monkees debuted. Rediscovered them during a winter break in college. Always tended to skip over the maudlin Davy songs, but kept coming back to Nez's songs - Mary, Mary (Run-D.M.C. sampled this one too) and The Kind of Girl I Could Love. What a sweet surprise when I discovered Nez had a whole solo career after the Monkees! Thanks for this deep dive, really enjoyed it (and the one on the first album), despite the clunkers, lol! Blame Donnie, this was totally his monster, ha!
Hey Jeff. This is the Monkees album I have the most nostalgia for. I was ten years old when it came out. This was one of the first albums I actually had in my early collection as a kid. Because of that attachment I love the songs for the most part. Other than Auntie Grizelda and The Day We Fall in Love, which are terrible, I have affection for all of others. Laugh is pretty bad too. But the bubblegum pop tunes like Mary Mary, When Love Comes Knockin' at Your Door, Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow and Hold On Girl all work when you're ten years of age. She is possibly my favorite on the album. Steppin' Stone and I'm a Believer are classics. Even Sometime in the Morning and The Kind of Girl I Could Love are listenable to me to this day. Cool video.
Thanks Rich! There is certainly an innocent charm to many of these songs. Knowing what better songs were left off the album makes it a little disappointing to me but the best songs here are fantastic,
This album is kind of maddening because it has some fantastic songs but some really bad ones too, just like you said. That’s crazy that the band didn’t even know the album was out. Another fun episode!
What a delightful presentation! I loved your Kirshner “dollar signs for pupils” description. I always felt if he had given the Monkees respect instead of rubbing in his control, especially with those horrible MOTM liner notes, we would have had more initial years with the Monkees. I have mixed feelings about this album. Unlike you I loved Peter’s voice. But the song! Not my favorite thing he has done. (You didn’t point out that he did that song in one take.) I wished he had a better additional song, like one that could have replaced “The Day I Fall in Love” that Davy tune that made me cringe in the 60s! It was terrible. Hated his sing speaking in songs. But the album has beautiful contributions. Mike’s songs were good, Micky’s voice was great and they had some wonderful song writers behind them. I was one of the people to get them to the phenomenal “18 WEEKS!!” you aptly repeated over and over. The Monkees were huge when I was growing up. And I don’t care what Kirshner or anyone else thought of them. They were four very talented guys.
Yes they were! The Day We Fall in Love is such a blemish on this album and was dated the minute it was released. Reason enough for them to have dumped Kirshner.

Hey Jeff. Well More Of The Monkess was the first album I had gotten in starting my record collection way back in 67. Before I would listen to top 40 radio on AM and " I'm Not Your Steeping Stone" was song with Mickey that got me in to get the album I do have vinyl copy of today. Yea Davy ones those gushy sweet ones that well they are ok and not my usual go to's on the album. Went back and got the first later and some ones forward as well later.

Yeah, Davy was the world's best-looking midget, but, his representation here is, save for "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)," is not impressive..."Hold on Girl" has a weak chorus, "When Love Comes Knockin' (at your door)" was listed during the end credits as being from the episode "Monkees at the Movies," which would have fit well during the romp sequence, "Laugh," like, "(theme from) The Monkees," was a television tune. Period. In truth, nobody in the group liked the nauseating number, "The Day We Fall in Love," which is no great surprise!!
The Monkees first album was my first. I was in the 6th grade. Later I attempted to buy the 45 (I’m a Believer/I’m not your Steppin Stone). I was with my parents in Bellas Hess, a department store in Mobile Alabama carrying the 45 in my hand. Before we got to the cashier I set in down somewhere and forgot it. When I got home and realized this, I reared back and hit an exercise pad leaning against the wall breaking the hand bone that lines up with little finger. I was a big fan of the Monkees.
Another great video, brother!!!!! Love hearing the history of the songwriting and arrangements. “Sometime In The Morning” is one of my favorite songs! “She” is phenomenal too. My Dad had this record and I would always pull it out as a kid to listen to it.
There was a time when all I had were Beatles and Monkees records. I think the first of other bands was either Satanic Majesties or Surrealistic Pillow. Then, it was off to the races, as they say!

These first two albums were Don Kirshner and studio musicians, not The Monkees. I also did not realize how long this album and the first one stayed at number 1 and this one bumped the first one! I have to feel a bit sorry for Kirshner though. He did his job very well and then got fired nevertheless! I remember Mike Nesmith calling this album the worse album ever recorded! I would not call it that, but I also like most of their other albums better than this one.
It should be noted that Michael Nesmith played the pedal-steel guitar throughout "The Kind of Girl I Could Love" including the solo!!! So much for them not playing anything credible on the album...
Dunno if someone else told you this, but "She" was never covered by KISS. Their song "She" is an original, which dates back to the days when they were called Wicked Lester. And it originally appeared on the "Dressed To Kill" album, not "Hotter Than Hell." All that said, KISS' "She" is probably best known for its placement on their mega-selling "Alive!" album from 1975. (Maybe you got it mixed up with one of the '60s covers KISS actually did record, like "Any Way You Want It" and "Then She Kissed Me.")

The Good Earth I think would be Davy at his worst haha. Anytime we get whispers from Davy Jones, I'm out. The Kind of Girl I Could Love is such a rocker, so is Stepping Stone and Mary Mary. This album is close to the bottom for me, even Changes beats it.
Loved this video. LOL'd when you got to "The Day We Fall in Love" because I have always said that was THE worst song out of the original nine albums. No question that it was targeted to the young female audience. Davy was extremely good looking and this was the perfect moist panty song for them. Unlistenable. Think you nailed the rest of the LP although I liked "Hold on Girl" a little more than you do. BTW, "Believer/Stepping Stone" was the first record I ever bought!

Agree for the most part, although he did get better material as time went on. Paul Williams' "Someday Man" is one of my favorites. Great arrangement with the horns and Jones was perfect for this song. Unfortunately, never on an original album and few heard it. "Early Morning Blues and Greens" and "A Little Bit Me.."probably the only two pre-"Pisces, Aquarius" tunes he did lead vocal on that were decent. "Dream World", "We Were Made For Each Other", "Don't Listen to Linda" and all of his songs on "Changes" were unadulterated garbage. Although IMHO, the SECOND worst song the Monkees put out was a B side of a single..quick..can you name it? The answer is.....................................................................................................Jones did the lead vocal............................................................................................................1968..............................................................................................B side of D.W. Washburn..............................................................................................................................................."It's Nice To Be With You". UGH! Jerry Goldstein wrote and produced some great songs but this was not one of them!
Coincidentally I was just checking my albums of the sixties and found out i had that one - music was superb and in many ways the monkees and others who made albums were neglected other than the big hitters - beatles, stones, dylan, the byrds etc
Album # 2 is not as strong as the first. But like you said it has a couple of good tracks. Colgems were just like the greedy Capitol label. Don was a ding dong as well. However I think that shade of green was never used on any other cover. Hahaaa not only KISS but The Misfits covered SHE too!
A great review . Although I don't like to admit it , I had some shirts at the time , similar to the ones that they wore on the cover . Believe it or not , they were quite stylish at the time . Anyway , I like this album more than the debut , largely because the good songs on it are a whole lot better than the good songs on the debut . She , Mary Mary , Stepping Stone , Sometime in the Morning and I'm a Believer are all good . I also like Look Out ( Here Comes Tomorrow ) ( I love you Sandra notwithstanding ) . The longer version from the episode it was in , is actually better . When Love Comes Knocking is ok . The filler is , of course , horrifying . ( It's good to know that if I ever accidentally swallow poison , I only need to play The Day We Fall In Love , and all will be well ). Imagine an album combining the best tracks of the debut , and this one : The Monkees Theme Saturday's Child Tomorrow's Gonna Be Another Day Take a Giant Step Last Train to Clarksville She When Love Comes Knocking at Your Door Mary , Mary I'm Not Your Stepping Stone Look Out ( Here Comes Tomorrow ) ( longer version ) Sometime in the Morning I'm a Believer ( and maybe include Papa Gene's Blues , and the faster version of I Wanna Be Free .) That would be a very good album . Cheers !!

(My first concert was seeing The Mothers of Invention and my second was Jethro Tull) But I definitely did not turn my nose up to The Monkees like all of my other friends did. (My high school years were 1968-1972) Good records with good production were always great music to me. And I told them that straight to faces and most of them replied, "Yeah...I loved The Monkees too...But don't tell anybody I said that!!!" Anyway, I hope this answers your question. I know it hard for you to grasp why songs like "Laugh" and "Your Auntie Griselda" were so popular back then. It fit perfectly to the times and the humor of the TV show which bled into the music, the radio and the world. It was fun and a breath of fresh air. (Remember, there was no internet or VCRs at the time. We could only watch the episode only once and nothing more till the next week. So radio was the outlet for our craving to rerun the episode. So hence, songs like "Laugh" and "Auntie Griselda" were loved on the radio like and extension of the episodes of the TV shows) Before The Monkees, there was nothing like this type of show on Network TV. And no surprise it debuted several days before Star Trek, which was mind blowing to us. A whole new dimension was opening to all of us kids and we knew it!! You had to have been there! By the way, I know you hated "Hold On Girl", but that song is very dear to me. When I first heard it, when came to my head, strangely enough, was sweet melancholy. Because I knew that songs like this and the times were going to disappear forever and would be just a happy memory of wonderful moments past....as it is now. You may not like the song, but if you lived in those days back then, it was priceless! And why was the album Number One for 18 weeks? They were that fucking popular at the time! And we loved that album!

This album is alright overall with a few misses. The Day We Fall in Love is the worst one of their catalogue. It's just skippable. Period.

Let's see....you love the "rockin" numbers...but totally dislike the softer songs and the fun songs on the album.....hmmm...I think I'm detecting a pattern here. (Ohhhhh...you're like my friends in high school who hated artists like Nick Drake, Joni Mitchell andJames Taylor and would only play stuff from Creedence, Jethro Tull and Zeppelin...I get it now....)

@@jeffwhitchervinyldestinati4486 I did. They never fell out of favor with me. And I loved all styles of music back then. (My first concert was seeing The Mothers of Invention and my second was Jethro Tull) But I definitely did not turn my nose up to The Monkees like all of my other friends did. (My high school years were 1968-1972) Good records with good production were always great music to me. And I told them that straight to faces and most of them replied, "Yeah...I loved The Monkees too...But don't tell anybody I said that!!!" Anyway, I hope this answers your question. I know it hard for you to grasp why songs like "Laugh" and "Your Auntie Griselda" were so popular back then. It fit perfectly to the times and the humor of the TV show which bled into the music, the radio and the world. It was fun and a breath of fresh air. (Remember, there was no internet or VCRs at the time. We could only watch the episode only once and nothing more till the next week. So radio was the outlet for our craving to rerun the episode. So hence, songs like "Laugh" and "Auntie Griselda" were loved on the radio like and extension of the episodes of the TV shows) Before The Monkees, there was nothing like this type of show on Network TV. And no surprise it debuted several days before Star Trek, which was mind blowing to us. A whole new dimension was opening to all of us kids and we knew it!! You had to have been there!
By the way, I know you hated "Hold On Girl", but that song is very dear to me. When I first heard it, when came to my head, strangely enough, was sweet melancholy. Because I knew that songs like this and the times were going to disappear forever and would be just a happy memory of wonderful moments past....as it is now. You may not like the song, but if you lived in those days back then, it was priceless! And why was the album Number One for 18 weeks? They were that fucking popular at the time! And we loved that album!
