  • In this enlightening video, Dr. Priyanka Singh, a retinal consultant at Shekar Eye Hospital in Bangalore, delves into the causes, treatment, and surgical correction of macular holes.
The macula, a crucial part of our visual system, is explained in detail, highlighting its significance in visual acuity, reading, writing, and facial recognition. Dr. Priyanka Singh emphasizes that macular holes is not a common condition, and affects approximately 8-9 individuals per 100,000 population annually.
While most macular holes are idiopathic, arising from the natural aging process and contraction of the jelly-like vitreous substance in the eye, some uncommon causes, including trauma, high myopia, maculital angioectasia, and age-related macular degeneration can also cause this condition.
For those experiencing symptoms such as distorted vision, difficulty reading, or facial recognition challenges, Dr. Priyanka Singh stresses the importance of seeking timely medical attention. To accurately diagnose a macular hole, a comprehensive clinical examination is followed by an OCT Macula test.
When it comes to treatment, Doctor explains that macular hole correction typically involves surgical intervention known as Vitrectomy. She reassures viewers that a macular hole does not lead to complete blindness, as peripheral vision is generally preserved. However, if left untreated, the condition can result in a significant decline in vision.
For individuals in Bangalore seeking macular hole surgery, the team at Shekar Eye Hospital is dedicated to providing expert care and treatment options.

Hi Dr. I’m very nearsighted with a very high minus power since birth. I’ve been diagnosed with a Macular Hole. I’ve seen multiple Retina Specialist and each informs me that any kind of corrective surgery is not recommended because it could cause Retina Detachment. They tell me my eye is so oblong surgery of any kind is not recommended, I watch so many videos like yours and see so much hope for this condition but, in my case I only see hopelessness. Thanks for such a good video.

You are the only one to suggest that trauma to the eye may be a causal factor in Epiretinal Membrane. Would that include bleph/ eyelid surgery?
