My first thought on seeing the title was, “How on earth can anyone flash mob Finlandia?” But what a glorious thing to do! With Chorus! Wow!
Just wonderful. Thank you California.
Kiitos Palo Alto! As a Finn this brings tears in my eyes.
Every time I hear this powerful epic song, I get tears and my heart just stops to absorb every note of this masterpiece by Sibelius. Go Finland
I concur !
How amazing to see and hear the Finlandia hymn being played on the other side of the world!
Quality is universal
*Finnland: Hundert Jahre alt!*
Vielen Dank für diese Aufführung in Californien! Es ist immer gut, wenn dieses kleine, mutige Volk, die Finnen, ins Bewusstsein der Weltöffentlichkeit gerückt wird.
Happy one hundredth Finland!
And like they say in mortal combat... Finnish Hymn!!
Thats horrible and i love it!
...and Finny Hinni
As someone has said elsewhere, this makes you patriotic for a country that's not your own. Lovely!
I loved it. I love Finns!
🕯️🕯️🇫🇮 I salute you. Mahtava esitys!
Thank you so much for doing this! Much love from Finland :)
And much love TO Finland!
They did their best and that's what counts!
Thank You So Much!
The perfect represation of the finnish history
I've never heard the Finlandia Hymn sung as part of the complete Finlandia tone poem. Lovely!
wooow, as a Finn this warms my heart so much! Thank you!
ekaa kertaa näin tän, kiitos teille kaikille niin paljon !
That cymbalist with the baby on his back. Awesome.
I know! Of course, he happens to be Finnish. It takes a certain dedication...
Thank You, Californian dreamers, 100 yrs, Stubbern 5 miljon, independent people Thank You.
Tänään, 06.12.2017, katsoin videonne. Upea suoritus - olen Ylpeä Teistä jokaisesta! Onnistunut suoritus!!!!
Thank you so much Palo Alto musicians and singers... I was caught by surprise when I found this video and can't stop crying!! Thank you so much! Stay safe there, with best regards from Finland;)
Love from Finland
Thank you so much!
Superb effort folks. Now THIS is a flash mob par excellence.
Very well played! Greetings from Finland! :)
This should be our national anthem - the part @ 6:20-8:08. The name of it is "Finlandia hymni". Suomi Finland 100 years today! Thanks for sharing.
Whole song is called that. That part you mentioned is what some Americans know as Be still My Soul, a christian hymn.
Try also Sibelius "Valse Triste"
Happy Finnish Independence Day!! 2019.
Great, now I've got two endless rivers pooring down from my eyes! Thank you so much for this song! ^_^
No reason to exaggerate.
@@HiReeZin Not a single bit, I'm a Finn and proud of it, this adaptation is so beautiful. Maybe it doesn't land home to you, maybe you don't value freedom, peace and love for all mankind, but I do, and that makes me cry out of joy.
Yup. I can’t imagine a Finnish person not loving Finlandia.@@WandaII
Thank you straight from Finland! :)
Thank you for this. I found this awhile ago. Happy 100th Independence Day today the 6th of Dec 2017!
Wow! Really! Big respect!!
Sibelius Finlandia of your orchesra playing is so great !
Kiitos! Thank you!
I've seen this several times and I like it. I grew up in Palo Alto (but no longer live there) and it's good to see the downtown area. Comments about the performance:
1. Yes, there were some sounds that were out-of-tune. But it should be noted that the orchestra was petforming outdoors in an area not designed for concerts. The singers & orchestra did well I felt.
2. "Finlandia" is a great song. It hints of the people's desire to be their own nation and pride in who they are. Knowing some the history, I salute their Sissu (spelling?).
By sissu do you mean sisu?
Yes, whatever the correct spelling is.
Very nice Thank you Jean S. Mahtavaa..
Kiitos! Oli mahtavaa. So happy that everyone is enjoying also the video.
I'll never forget the goosebumps from the use of this incredible piece of music in Die Hard 2, when the hostage planes started landing one bye one..... unglaublich!
Impressive! Thank you for sharing.
Great timing for this beautiful proud compelling hymn to nation which has come from Finland's times of trial to signify universal national trial. If any nation ever was in a time of trial it is the USA right now! Every church, synagogue, mosque, public square, gathering, every citizen should have this hymn on their lips until the ongoing terrifying political tragedy is brought under control and the USA becomes a nation again.
Heart warming to see and listen, because I was living in Palo Alto for 2 years during 2000-2002.

They did it again a ~week ago at the Helsinki international airport. By Club for five, an acapella band. Got chills
And here's the link from the performance done at the railway station 5 years ago: ua-cam.com/video/jaKko3VGAnY/v-deo.html
Well done. Should be our national anthem.
Kiitos.
Ihana!!!
Guy and Laura...came across this while watching flash mob videos while at work. What a surprise to see and hear you guys! This is one of my favorite pieces of all time. Miss you both--glad to see that you are still playing.

Hieno,, olen ylpeä teistä 🙂
Thank you! We hear you!
Super!
For all people uninformed, this is Finnish theme for struggle against Soviets and Russia.
kiitos
Sibelius❤️
Musica molto originale ed evocativa di immagini pulite-------
Rest in peace grandfather. He took three shrapnel in his back in the winter war.
but how can we go to Tori if we are all in tears? =(
Jos on pakko olla rehellinen.....niin, tämä on surkein Finlandia mitä oon ikinä kuullu.
Samaa mieltä
When Sibelius wrote the symphony in 1899-ish Finland was not a country, infact Finland had never been a country, at that point us finns had not yet had a homeland ever. It was a time of oppression from the Russian Empire that tried to russianize Finland to be culturally russian thankfully we resisted and this song in particular increased the sense of nationalism in finns to fight harder. We had essentially been slaves and 2nd grade citizens to Russia and Sweden for centuries. When my grandfather was born Finland was only 34 years old and my grandfather still cycles to the store and plants vegetables on their backyard garden. His father was born into the Russian Empire, this all was not that long ago.
Hey! I've been there.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Keep it👍
Im so thinkin. How you are, it so long time,
How long did you guys practice Finnish just for this awesome performance!?
Congratulations on Finland's 100th anniversary from Japan. I love this song and melodies. But, this orchestration is very very bad in tuning. So I feel sad.
kIITOS :
Paljon kiitoksia!
👍
MANY THANKS 😍 Nato thanks also 🤣
I Will,, you all the best,, My ruuts In there,,
Go figure, violins brought it together =)
I didn't get a word out, but nice. Are those who sing former finns or americans?
I would go with that they don't know a word of Finnish, but they did give a damn good effort =)
@@duhni4551:: some of them look like Finns; most are obviously not of Finnish ethnicity, although they could still be citizens of Finland. I would be very surprised that there could be that many Finns in Palo Alto. CALIF is primarily Asian and Hispanic.
@@leeb.7188 Yeh, Finland is small nation in the first place with low population, it is not that whole country moved to USA in the first place.
@@duhni4551 : Yes, unlike Vietnam. I think half their population moved to Southern Calif, hahaha. But that would be too hot for the Finns. Also, I think they prefer to stay in their own country because it is economically very successful. The Finns who came to the US generations ago all settled in Northern Minnesota and Northern Michigan because they prefer cold and snow.
@@leeb.7188 That is the case generally and there weren't that many Finns who moved out back in the day either, i think Nordics in general stuck together in the regions which makes it seem like there were more from one nation while in reality there were people from all over the Nordics.
There are some work based moving from here to there but it is not in such scale that you would notice it in the streets.
But i do like the fact that even our small nation has had our impact on US. history, no matter how small it has been =) We are such small nation that it always feels amazing if we have managed to leave our fingerprints in the world =D
Torilla tavataan
Is it really a flash mob if you see people setting up their instruments and a crowd has time to gather around them before they even start?
This music tells You the story of Our(finnish) Alamo year 1939, in Summa (The place where the front collapced for 2 days.) . War was almoust lost but men were heroic. Kaveria ei jätetä! (don't leave your woonded friend, go get him back)
the glory days of Tali-Ihantala (Your battle of Iwo Jima) 1944 -we had enough artillery, no tanks, but brave men to bazooka russian t-34's
We speak very peculiar language because of these men.
Our forfathers!
Men, who learned us to speak finnish, and love finnish Ladies!
To Finland, You can come only with a passport!
Not with guns.
Wellcome!
Kari Janatuinen,
Finlandia was composed in 1899-1900 (40 years before the Winter War). It is a musical piece of romantic nationalism, composed during a time of peril, oppression and "russification" by Char Nikolay II's regime, but it has NOTHING to do with the Winter war of 1939-40. Sibelius intended Finlandia to be a symphonic instrumental piece, without lyrics, and when different lyrics started emerging, he was not happy about it. At least not in the beginning.
Even the currently best known Finnish lyrics (made by V.A. Koskenniemi in 1940) are compatible with the original spirit of 1899, they are not about the Winter War.
We can still be proud of our forefathers' achievements in Summa. But let's keep facts and fiction separated. Finlandia was not composed, nor written because of those achievements.
In Tali-Ihantala, along with artillery and bazookas, you also had help from the German Luftwaffe. And that was one of the very few good things these buggers ever did during all the time from 1937 (attack on Guernica) and 1945 (end of show).
I went to a wonderful concert organized by the Embassy in the Berlin Philharmony on Finland's 100th anniversary - best wishes for many mor years to come!
Jees,, mitä sinulle kuuluu,, siellä
🇫🇮💙🤍
Hello,, My,, grand,, grand,, mam,, dad,,,,, are you ok
I was expecting someone to sing it :'D but no i guess not And i mean the Hymn part of the Finlandia
Siinä ollu jengi ihmeissään
EU is in the war against Ryssä today. We all citicens n Europe hope you suppor for us !
that hymn part didn't sound good
that hymn part is what it's all about.
B. Maurene White the hymn part is the best but it wasn't performed so well in this video.
SERMU7 it has probably something to do with the fact that Finnish is notoriously hard and the majority of the singer weren't native speakers. Taking that into account, the song was great
My ears are telling me something aounds off, i cant tell what it is but ist off
The clarinet pitch is a bit flat.
I dedicate this performance to the peole of the USA... after their wild election.
Pretty out of tune...and not so high quality, but... still Finland !
Auts. Aika paljon olisi pitänyt vielä harjoitella.
Ei kai tämmöset paikalliset amatööriläiset omaa niin paljoa aikaa =) Mutta täytyy antaa 10 efortista =)
Singing was great but they did not know how to pronounce Finnish
Soumi. . Perkelle / Yumala . . our two pagan gods of old
Good lord, this must be the worst performance ever. Everything is off tune and the musicians does not have any sense whatsoever of the spirit of the piece. This is a blasphemy. Absolutely horrible.
La acústica estuvo nefasta pero me gusto.
