Becky - I speak as a farmer and the export of livestock for slaughter is totally unjustified. The absence of refrigeration is a red herring - it is all to do with ritual slaughter by local abattoirs. Any farmer, either here in the UK, where live exports for slaughter is no longer permitted, in Brazil, Ireland or Australia where it is a common practice, has a duty to ensure the well being of stock they have reared from the date of birth to the date of slaughter. I hate to think how the cattle and sheep are treated once they are off loaded from the livestock carrier, how they are held pending slaughter and how they are slaughtered. Farmers and carriers cannot rest on the apparent luxury of the vessel and ignore what happens once out of their care. The livestock vessels themselves do not have a perfect track record. In June 2022, the Al Badri 1 capsized and sank at the discharge pier at Suakin, Sudan. Only 700 of the 16,000 sheep on board escaped and survived. Inexcusable.

Air conditioning on the ships transporting the livestock it brings a whole new meaning to the term cattle class travel. I'll bet it still gets warm in the livestock cruise. liners for the stock below decks. No access to a swimming pool, though, for a nice cool dip for the passengers ??

Thanks Becky, this is a subject i had never thought of. It doesn't appear to be 3rd world countries only, I have just done a check on Marine Traffic and there is currently at least one livestock carrier on route to Israel.
It widens the horizons some what when you travel from the UK to have a tour round Aus aye? Less folks and traffic!!
There was a program on tv must have been about 15 years ago following one of those ships the Becrux from loading right through the journey well worth a watch.I think I have seen it on UA-cam if you want to see on board
